Correct. I think we've gotten off topic. I hope the OP got what they were looking for from this thread and has some food for thought. I don't think going back and forth with other posters about hypothetical scenarios is going to yield fruit.

Respectfully - I'll bow out here.

Remember what I said about degree holders and basic math? 100000% huh?

Sorry, that was uncalled for - but it was low hanging fruit and I'm human so...

I'm glad you learned things in your Chem classes. Seriously I'm not implying that the act of learning is somehow not valuable. I am saying that the system currently in place is both dated, and dishonest. Learning will always be an essential part of growing up and preparing for the workforce.

In an ideal world, almost everything that is presently taught in "higher education" would be covered during compulsory education (K-12). Right now, K-12 is basically taxpayer funded day care. Colleges will (not should... will) be replaced by technical programs and on-the-job training. But at a higher base-line than we have now since Colleges and Universities have lowered the bar.

Unless you plan to engage in education as a profession, or enter the medical industry, than spending your time and money on a degree is a waste of both. You're better off spending those 2-4 years gaining experience in the workplace.

Ideally, if Linus is your role-model, than you are aspiring to work for yourself, in which case the credential of a degree serves no purpose since you aren't trying to convince some 3rd party to hire you.

If you are unable to self-learn, or require specific educational assistance, there are trade schools and other institutions offering coursework to get your started for a lower cost and a lower investment of your time.

This is the only thing I can suggest to you to do OP. Look at yourself and think about the things you enjoy and the core academia that you like/dislike. I.e. if you like math and science, look at fields that involve these two. If you hate literature, don't go to college for a English/lit degree.

Personally, I'm in my local community college right now for my associates in engineering and will be looking to transfer Spring 2022 for B.S. Civil Engineering.

I get that, but lets be realistic, liking watching videos and actually doing it, are two different things. Doing the job Linus does is not just "get up and make videos" either. They likely don't know much about it and mostly see the whole "he get to build computers and make money from that?!".
So saying they look up to Linus is not really helpful as far as finding a course of study.
(And the fact Linus dropped out, so it's not like there's a specific field of study here)

The way I see things as far as high school goes, It's better to do more classes, than limiting yourself to just get the minimum for one specific college course.
Even more so considering they don't even know what they really want to do yet.

Usually yeah, similar to timestamps on reddit for the trade market. I trust it more than whoever just uses a stock photo, Amazon screenshot, or even a screenshot of their own listing from a different app/older listing.

People could just want pretty graphics on their GPUs... and you know girls can be into girls too, right?

This thread started off on the wrong foot. Yeah, the design might be more stereotypically appealing to women, but we shouldn't act like you're 'wrong' for getting this card if you're male (or non-binary, or...).

A picture of an anime girl for a gamer girl? Wouldn't a gamer girl rather want a hot guy on it instead? The logic doesn't make sense to me here; this is more like a card for the gamer boy instead.

Well, good news, then! It won't happen! There's plenty of people and companies that do not want to use Apple's OS or their ecosystem!

A lack of women in the technology community probably also has something to do there being a lack of diversity in STEM fields as a whole. There's been work done on this, with things like STEM scholarships catered to women & girls, and initiatives meant to expose girls to technical subjects traditionally considered the domain of boys in school. Whether it's helped or not I couldn't say. I took computer science for two years in highschool, and it wasn't a sausage fest, but it was a perfect 50/50 split either, women were certainly the minority.

It all flows downwards. Men work in technical fields and so they have technical hobbies. Those hobbies are perceived as masculine and so women are discouraged from participating. This manifests itself in marketing as boys play video games and shoot nerf guns while girls play with Barbie and My Little Ponies. The marketing (and other socialisation factors) means that when there are girls enthusiastic about technology or video games they're seen as strange, invasive, or your favorite word for "other". The boys grow up and depending on how they get socialised as adolescents they may Respect Women™ or become the Gamers™ that we all know and love. Gamers™ are the ones who do the harassing because Women in technology oppresses them by violating the sacred gender roles they've constructed.

Edit: It goes without saying that there's infinitely more factors at play. There mountains upon mountains of text from academics who've spent their lives studying gender and its social consequenes and a forum thread, let alone a single post, won't be enough to cover them all.

Not entirely on the topic, but still adjacent enough that I feel she's worth mentioning: Fran Blanche has a Youtube-channel where she explores all sorts of old electronics. It's sometimes quite amazing what sorts of clever tricks engineers of old came up with to coax mostly-analog electronics to do what they wanted, and Fran's channel is definitely one I'd recommend for anyone into old, non-PC electronics.

Yummychickenblue reacted to TetraSky in are free windows activators ilegal
You're getting a paid product for free, of course it's illegal.
Not all activators are made equal. Some do what they say they are made for and just that. While others can install a trojan/keylogger and/or backdoor so deep in the OS that it's near impossible to detect or remove without formatting.
Your Operating System is the single most important piece of software on your computer, by using an activator that you have no clue where it comes from, who made it, what's the underlying code of it and what exactly it changes on your computer, you've decided to compromise it and the safety of your personal information right from the get go because you didn't feel like buying Windows. It's literally $5 on a grey market website. Heck, if you're a gamer, Linux is a perfectly viable OS these days as well.
