For a large company one would think this would be handled yet it took them 2 days to figure it out. No reporting? Or are these systems very old and require manual maintenance?

People really overestimate large companies. Remember sony storing credentials, credit-card info and more in plaintext files? I also think that the company has grown a little too fast in the last year or two, resulting in a lack of experience and time in managing/training new hires.

This growth will probably slow down after this drama or in the worst case scenario reverse given how much money they lost so far (300k+ from floatplane alone and propably several times that from merchs+views+sponsor...)

The problem here is not that people make mistakes. A common saying is that only people who don't work are the ones who don't make mistakes. I don't think we have the necessary information to decide what is the right course of action here and nor should we, it is an internal issue that has to be dealt with within LMG.
What I'll say is that a good leader does not throw it's people under the bus (or even joke about it) but takes ownership of the problems that they make and reflect on him/herself to see how things could have gone wrong and what can be done to remedy the situation. My personal opinion is that Colton has made mistakes, but having worked in a very busy environment for a couple of years, and having heard the concerns from some of the staff regarding the working conditions I find it completely plausible that these mistakes were a result of being overworked and always having to jump from one issue/project/fire to the next one.

I hope LMG can pull off what they have stated in the latest video (even though it was a sterile statement with some distasteful product/store ads and jokes that I think should not have been put in it considering the tone of it and that people were expecting a serious video from them). Nonetheless I'll stop consuming their content for now and check back in a couple of months to see if/how things have improved. (I know my YT premium views worth almost nothing but it's all I can do to voice my disapproval of where things are going).

I understand that LMG is in the process of changing it's structure because the old "we're all friends here" thing just doesn't fly anymore with a company this size. There needs to be proper onboarding, knowledge transfer, escalation paths, trainings in place and they have to understand that things that flew before won't necessarily do it in the future and in the corporate world you have to adhere to very strict rules.

I know that working culture in north america is different to what we have in the EU, but upper management has to understand why it is important to keep to a 40 hour working week and respect the employees' right to disconnect after work. This is how you can retain your employees and ensure that their work performance doesn't decrease.

Holy Christ, dude. I'm assuming you're an adult with a job, and, if so, I should not have to tell you this, but comparing how someone runs their personal social media with how they're treated by an employer isn't just apples to oranges, it's not even fruits to vegetables; it's food to antimatter.

One is a person engaging with people on their own terms, and the other is a person being pressured to engage with someone else via a power imbalance.

First of All....Old Guy here, been following LTT since the beginning, old nerd since the days of ZXSpectrum, i´m not an hater, or what they call in LTT foruns,a Reddit hater, i´m a fan...but i´m not stupid or blind...
I´ve said since the beginning of this PR S.. storm that LMG needed to address this via its CEO...they did not until now and Linus response was just more fuel to the fire ( a bit of an artesianaanswer". Now the CEO finally appears, but instead of being in a relaxed setting and calm, they film him, like he´s being grilled by toe NYC detectives  for questioning and with eyes wide open... the same to the other members of the team. WTFrak?
I see a lot of naivité in LMG ways of work , that cannot exist in a multimillion-dollar company. Gamers Nexus used LMG own employees' clips stating that they were working too hard and were unsatisfied with the quality of their work, that was posted in a public video. That can be fantastic clarity to the public...but normally, that is only used internally in a company, in order to improve processes and WOW and solve the issues. Also, A very bad amateur error was to send content out without cutting claims of one of their employees bashing by name Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed methods of benchmarking. One of basic rules of the competition: One does not bashes the competition just to boast " Hey, unlike these guys and these guys, we do this" .You will get flak for it, and your glass ceilings will be targeted.
Luke Lafreniére has been a sort of Jiminy Cricket( conscience) to Linus, bringing him back to Earth when he starts to forget the connection to us common mortals. One cannot say " Hey, this was wrong but i could not spend 500 buck extra of time from my team" and at the same time have its team destroying a startup and "auctioning" their prototype. I can only think after this and the story of the mouse that did not slide, that only a real idiot would send LMG something new to test with the risk of being destroyed at the spot or even worse...having the risk of losing prototypes that can be potentially auctioned and end up at the hands of competitors....at this time Linus should have all his team trying to find out where the prototype is.Not paying back. If someone gets it and decides to use it, its a catastrophe to that company .
Another thing...Linus believes sometimes that he knows more than everyone...and Luke a lot of times cannot bring him to reality, like when he defended the ridiculous amount of ads we have to endure plus his sponsors...heck, sure, of computers he knows way more than I do and many of its followers...but of dealing with managing customers and public relations...a lot of us know way more than him.
I usually don´t write about this kind of things ..i´m over 50, i work in one of the biggest companies of the world and have a company of my own ( way smaller than Lunis 😉 . I like a lot of the content, its fantastic to see Linus journey, like a little reality show. But Linus, you are no longer the underdog, you cannot expect the " Trust me bro". If you tried the "trust me bro" policy with the backpacks here in the European Union...you would be in big, big trouble...
Its maybe time to see new processes, assign correct jobs to the teams and be prepared to be scrutinized as the other big companies are..I´ll be waiting to see it...Ni, I d´m´t subscribe to Floatplane yet but have more that 2k bought in merch...and yes, monetizing this video was a bd move...also the shout outs to a new screwdriver and the impronptu jokes..Please...PR PEOPLE...GOOD ONES... NOW 😞

    1. Quality > Quantity, and in this case, too many channels is diluting content quality. Don’t become the Applebee’s of tech franchises. That may not translate well to Canadians, glad to explain.

    2. Don’t lose the light-heartedness and beaming passion and excitement of Linus in the fun, “full-send” videos. Not all videos require a perfect script.

    3. Optics matter, and since LMG is a corporation, it’s time to behave more like one including ethics. The optics behind supporting (or not supporting) brands due to personal investments appears to be a massive conflict of interest. Linus needs to be cautious in this space.

Finally, IF this is true then there is… some reckoning coming.  It currently it is he said she said. Though I am unsure if ltt can fully come out to disprove things. If they do, they cancel culture will come out saying they are lying. I’d they dont, cancel culture will come out saying they are monsters.

Pickles von Brine reacted to LinusTech in Gamers Nexus alleges LMG has insufficient ethics and integrity
There won't be a big WAN Show segment about this or anything. Most of what I have to say, I've already said, and I've done so privately.

To Steve, I expressed my disappointment that he didn't go through proper journalistic practices in creating this piece. He has my email and number (along with numerous other members of our team) and could have asked me for context that may have proven to be valuable (like the fact that we didn't 'sell' the monoblock, but rather auctioned it for charity due to a miscommunication... AND the fact that while we haven't sent payment yet, we have already agreed to compensate Billet Labs for the cost of their prototype). There are other issues, but I've told him that I won't be drawn into a public sniping match over this and that I'll be continuing to move forward in good faith as part of 'Team Media'. When/if he's ready to do so again I'll be ready.

To my team (and my CEO's team, but realistically I was at the helm for all of these errors, so I need to own it), I stressed the importance of diligence in our work because there are so many eyes on us. We are going through some growing pains - we've been very public about them in the interest of transparency - and it's clear we have some work to do on internal processes and communication. We have already been doing a lot of work internally to clean up our processes, but these things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day, but that's no excuse for sloppiness.

Now, for my community, all I can say is the same things I always say. We know that we're not perfect. We wear our imperfection on our sleeves in the interest of ensuring that we stay accountable to you. But it's sad and unfortunate when this transparency gets warped into a bad thing. The Labs team is hard at work hard creating processes and tools to generate data that will benefit all consumers - a work in progress that is very much not done and that we've communicated needs to be treated as such. Do we have notes under some videos? Yes. Is it because we are striving for transparency/improvement? Yeah... What we're doing hasn't been in many years, if ever.. and we would make a much larger correction if the circumstances merited it. Listing the wrong amount of cache on a table for a CPU review is sloppy, but given that our conclusions are drawn based on our testing, not the spec sheet, it doesn't materially change the recommendation. That doesn't mean these things don't matter. We've set KPIs for our writing/labs team around accuracy, and we are continually installing new checks and balances to ensure that things continue to get better. If you haven't seen the improvement, frankly I wonder if you're really looking for it... The thoroughness that we managed on our last handful of GPU videos is getting really incredible given the limited time we have for these embargoes. I'm REALLY excited about what the future will hold.

With all of that said, I still disagree that the Billet Labs video (not the situation with the return, which I've already addressed above) is an 'accuracy' issue. It's more like I just read the room wrong. We COULD have re-tested it with perfect accuracy, but to do so PROPERLY - accounting for which cases it could be installed in (none) and which radiators it would be plumbed with (again... mystery) would have been impossible... and also didn't affect the conclusion of the video... OR SO I THOUGHT...

I wanted to evaluate it as a product, and as a product, IF it could manage to compete with the temperatures of the highest end blocks on the planet, it still wouldn't make sense to buy... so from my point of view, re-testing it and finding out that yes, it did in fact run cooler made no difference to the conclusion, so it didn't really make a difference.

Adam and I were talking about this today. He advocated for re-testing it regardless of how non-viable it was as a product at the time and I think he expressed really well today why it mattered. It was like making a video about a supercar. It doesn't mater if no one watching will buy it. They just wanna see it rip.  I missed that, but it wasn't because I didn't care about the consumer.. it was because I was so focused on how this product impacted a potential buyer. Either way, clearly my bad, but my intention was never to harm Billet Labs. I specifically called out their incredible machining skills because I wanted to see them create something with a viable market for it and was hoping others would appreciate the fineness of the craftsmanship even if the product was impractical. I still hope they move forward building something else because they obviously have talent and I've watched countless niche water cooling vendors come and go. It's an astonishingly unforgiving market.

Either way, I'm sorry I got the community's priorities mixed-up on this one, and that we didn't show the Billet in the best light. Our intention wasn't to hurt anyone. We wanted no one to buy it (because it's an egregious waste of money no matter what temps it runs at) and we wanted Billet to make something marketable (so they can, y'know, eat).

With all of this in mind, it saddens me how quickly the pitchforks were raised over this. It also comes across a touch hypocritical when some basic due diligence could have helped clarify much of it. I have a LONG history of meeting issues head on and I've never been afraid to answer questions, which lands me in hot water regularly, but helps keep me in tune with my peers and with the community. The only reason I can think of not to ask me is because my honest response might be inconvenient.

We can test that... with this post. Will the "It was a mistake (a bad one, but a mistake) and they're taking care of it" reality manage to have the same reach? Let's see if anyone actually wants to know what happened. I hope so, but it's been disheartening seeing how many people were willing to jump on us here. Believe it or not, I'm a real person and so is the rest of my team. We are trying our best, and if what we were doing was easy, everyone would do it. Today sucks.

I remember working at microcenter and literally a pallet of diablotek power supplies sat in the BYO department. I made it my mission to prevent people for buying them. I went so far as to get into trouble with management. XD

but main thing was these power supplies were the biggest pieces of shit I have ever seen. They could not do their advertised wattage, did not follow the atx spec and were basically firestarters.

however, I could not find what happened to them in the end. Like, how they went out? Did their business fail or did something else force them? Or was it something else.

One of my most frustrating experiences was from working with my current boss. I tried to explain to her the issues that came up when I had to redo her machine, why things were different and that I needed time with her to get things sorted... she literally waved me off and said I don't wanna hear about it. I blew my lid on that one. I have 13 years as a professional (17 years total if you count all my time since I was 13) in the computer repair business (hundreds of hours with on-site experience and in-home networking easily as well), 4 in professional data recovery. being disregarded like that really really upset me.

Second time she couldn't figure out why her PDFs were not printing right. I had asked her what program she uses and she had no idea. She didn't know what a program was... I even showered her various programs that did PDFs and she just looked at me with this dumb look of bewilderment. Then, proceeded to just ignore me after I asked her some more questions...

Told her no more computer help. She will have to call someone.

Side note. I left the professional computer repair world because I wasn't making enough money and the stress got to me. Until I left I had no idea how much it weighed on my mind. Now, I got a wonderful separation of work and home life, do some consulting on the side and work with dogs all day making a lot more money and a lot less stress. Though my boss can be rather infuriating.
