Disable javascript and flash, that's the only sure fire way. I also find microBlock works pretty well and HTTPSEverywhere should always be installed.

If she needs javascript and flash then consider installing a seperate "sandboxed" browser with those enabled that she only uses whenever she absolutely needs them.

WELCOME TO THE ARGUMENT THREAD OF ALL ARGUMENT THREADS
TL/DR: Intel and AMD today are both great! Why is everyone still Arguing???
We all know what this is, so let's get right into it!

    Systems I have owned:
    Intel Pentium Based
    Intel Core i5 Based
    Intel Core i7 Based
    AMD Phenom II Based
AMD Ryzen 5 Based (Current, see build log in signature)

So it would seem that when somebody asks for advice on what system they should build, the FanBoys on this forum always start a war over it. So now, I am going to explain why I like BOTH Intel and AMD systems today, why BOTH systems could meet your needs, and why the FanBoys on this forum need to stop continuously getting peoples threads  locked up due to stupid FanBoy arguments!

    INTEL

Intel is the KING of gaming, and anyone with any sort of education on the subject will know this well. Intel's higher clock speeds, IPCs, and overclocking ability have made it the premier choice for enthusiasts for many years. Now lets not sugar coat this too much, the fact of the matter is that Intel-Based systems come with a premium. Intel systems have, and probably always will cost more than their AMD counterparts. You do, however, get what you pay for. Intel systems are generally more stable, use higher quality motherboards, and are backed by Intel's superior R&D funding.

Make no mistake, there was a reason why Intel became a monopoly in the home PC market of all kinds for nearly 15 years as AMD struggled with its Phenom and FX series of CPUs. This monopoly continued until 2017 when AMD finally struck back in the high-performance department with a series of CPUs that would change the industry forever, and usher in a new era of competition, finally forcing Intel to offer competitive pricing on the market.

    AMD (Specifically Ryzen)

AMD has had, lets say a checkered history, at best. The smaller R&D funds coupled with Intel dominance meant that for years, AMD never stood a chance. But then in 2017, Ryzen premiered. The first EVER competitive, high-end, high-performance CPU series from AMD in the modern age. AMD finally had simultaneous multi-treading, high clock speeds (relatively speaking), and high IPC performance. Did it reach performance high enough to take the crown from Intel? Not quite, but it came close, and THAT is what matters.

When Ryzen premiered, the Intel Core i7 7700K was the undisputed King and obvious choice for any serious enthusiast with the money to spend. However, the Ryzen 7 1700's and 1800's, with DOUBLE the core and threads count while only being slightly behind in sheer frame rate performance, meant that Ryzen was now the obvious choice for anyone who had any common sense. However, Ryzen systems had issues at launch. With booting problems, RAM compatibility problems, RAM speed issues, and stability problems. However, this was corrected with firmware and software updates over time and Ryzen became a truly worthy adversary for Intel, metaphorically smashing the 7000 series of Intel CPUs and taking back a large chunk of the market share.

    THE ARGUMENTS

With Intel's newest 8000 series of CPUs now having more cores and threads, the argument from Intel fans is that the higher IPCs and clock speeds combined with increased stability makes Intel the obvious choice once again. Meanwhile, the AMD fans argue that the higher core and thread counts of Ryzen, combined with lower motherboard cost and unlocked overclocking abilities on far more hardware at more reasonable pricing, makes AMD the obvious choice of today. While both of these arguments are 100% correct, let me explain why none of this matters, and why both sides are great choices today:

Most PC enthusiasts are looking for a machine that can play video games well, at high frame rates with low latency and high quality; while also being able to perform multi-threaded workloads at high speeds with efficiency and accuracy. The thing is, BOTH Ryzen and Intel both already do this TODAY. Yes, Intel machines can hit that magical 144Hz that makes gaming simply insanely fast and responsive, but Ryzen is very close to the 144Hz mark after all of the BIOS updates and sorting out of bugs.

Ryzen 2000 series CPUs are right around the corner; CPUs that WILL hit the 144Hz mark just as the Intel 8000 series CPUs do right now. And while Intel will continue to have slightly better IPC and frame rate stats, Ryzen will be within spitting distance with the new Ryzen 2000 setup. Besides, MOST people are just fine with 60 FPS gaming, I know I am so long as I do not experience frame drops below 60 FPS, and Ryzen CPUs ALREADY do this AND 100 FPS rock-solid stable. So once Ryzen 2000 CPUs are taking care of 144Hz without a problem, how can you claim superiority towards Intel or AMD?

Intel will continue to have slightly better IPCs and Clock speeds than AMD with each generation, while AMD will continue to have more cores, more threads, and better value with each generation. So after Ryzen 2000 premieres, the only thing that will matter is what you use your machine for. If you need higher clock speeds, then go Intel. If you need more cores and threads, go AMD. Its as simple as that people, the gaming world will be level.

If you want to try to explain to me why 200 FPS even matters, or why Intel sucks or AMD sucks, please feel free to comment. Spoiler alert, I will simply be laughing at you, but that is what this thread is for. So, why did I choose Ryzen this time around? Well, A.) Its nice to see AMD on the high-end side of things and naturally I was anxious to take the new kid on the block for a spin. But mostly, I am sick of Intel's monopoly, and until the Global Market Share levels out quite a bit, I just don't fell comfortable with purchasing another Intel-Based system. My new Ryzen 5 rig is a BEAST of a gaming and productivity machine and it is more than I could have ever dreamed of, especially for the price, so I am happy.

I will say though that if I were to build a new system TODAY with brand new parts, I WOULD prefer the i7-8700K. This is because buying a brand new set of Ryzen hardware right now just makes no sense at all with the next generation coming in less than 3 weeks time. But once Ryzen 2000 hits the shelves, that will be an ENTIRELY different story. Cheers, and enjoy the arguments!

    GeForce Partner Program Shenanigans

    Source 3: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2018/03/01/geforce-partner-program/

This was news last week but we avoided talking about it because we didn’t want to speculate before getting some concrete information ourselves.
The story began when several websites- including HardOCP- were alerted to the goings-on by AMD
In a blog post, from March 1st, NVidia outlined their new GeForce Partner Program, which ostensibly helps consumers identify brands that deliver the “GeForce Promise” of delivering the best PC gaming platform bar-none.
HardOCP began interviewing AIB and OEMs, who communicated that the GPP:
1.) has terms that are likely illegal.
2.) GPP is likely going to tremendously hurt consumers' choices.
3.) It will disrupt business with the companies that they are currently doing business with, namely AMD and Intel.
In order to have access to the GPP program, its partners must have its "Gaming Brand Aligned Exclusively With GeForce."
Even though Nvidia’s blog post says “Partners continue to have the ability to sell and promote products from anyone”, the GPP documentation says those who do not participate will lose benefits such as:
    high-effort engineering engagements
    early tech engagement
    launch partner status
    game bundling
    sales rebate programs
    social media and PR support
    marketing reports
    Marketing Development Funds (MDF)
HardOCP has been told that if a company does not participate in GPP, those companies feel as if NVIDIA would hold back allocation of GPUs from their inventories.
This has not been spelled out contractually, but is rather done on a wink and a nod.
It was expressed to HardOCP that publishing their article "could damage the relationship" between HardOCP and NVIDIA

    Source 2: https://www.cnet.com/news/amd-has-a-spectre-meltdown-like-security-flaw-of-its-own/

CTS-Labs, a security company based in Israel, announced Tuesday that its researchers had found 13 critical security vulnerabilities that would let attackers access data stored on AMD's Ryzen and EPYC processors, as well as install malware on them.
The vulnerabilities have been put into four groups, called
    Master Key
    Ryzenfall (lol)
    Fallout
    Chimera
Thankfully, nearly all of the vulnerabilities require root access in order to be exploited.
    But it gets sketchy:
The researchers gave AMD less than 24 hours to look at the vulnerabilities and respond before publishing the report.
Standard vulnerability disclosure calls for at least 90 days notice so companies have time to address flaws properly.
Google gave Intel six months to fix issues related to Spectre and Meltdown.
The researchers pre-briefed media AND a company that makes money by shorting the stock market
Viceroy Research published an “obituary” for AMD just 30 mins after CTS-Labs publicized the vulnerabilities.

Rumour has it a new NVIDIA GameWorks Ray Tracing feature will be announced on Monday, enabling real-time effects such as Glossy Reflections, Area Shadows and Ambient Occlusion.
This technology is going to be “highly optimized” on the upcoming NVIDIA Volta GPUs, presumably at a hardware level.
    NVIDIA has partnered with Microsoft to create a DirectX Ray Tracing API;
this is already being used by major publishers and developers like
    Electronic Arts,
4A Games (who are making Metro Exodus, due for release this year)
Remedy Games (now at work on Project 7, due in 2019).
The API is said to be supported by the most popular game engines,
    Unreal Engine 4
    Unity 5
DICE’s Frostbite engine, now used in almost all the games made by Electronic Arts.

Intel has moved faster than most predicted, announcing that chips coming out later this year will include improvements at the hardware/architecture level that protect against the Meltdown and Spectre
While Variant 1 will continue to be addressed via software mitigations, Intel is making changes to their hardware design to further address the Variants 2 and 3.
We have redesigned parts of the processor to introduce new levels of protection through partitioning
Think of this partitioning as additional “protective walls” between applications and user privilege levels to create an obstacle for bad actors.
These changes will begin with their next-generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors (code-named Cascade Lake) as well as 8th Generation Intel® Core™ processors expected to ship in the second half of 2018.
In the meantime, Intel has now released microcode updates for 100 percent of Intel products launched in the past five years that require protection against the side-channel method vulnerabilities discovered by Google.

Chinese news site Commercial Times has claimed that iPhone supplier Wistron was caught using ‘unauthorized components’ in its production of the iPhone 8 Plus in China.
The report says that Apple ordered the company to halt production when the issue came to light, with assembly suspended for two weeks
Wistron has issued a statement saying “there was not a “two-week production suspension” and that production remains completely normal.
...but they didn’t deny using unauthorized parts
The issue concerns the use of waterproof components not certified by Apple.
Wistron is said to have ‘penalized’ a number of mid- and high-level executives as a way of demonstrating to Apple that it takes the matter seriously.
Wistron is only a secondary supplier to Apple in China, with Foxconn picking up the bulk of iPhone orders, but is a major iPhone assembler in India.

In a blogpost, EA announced a complete re-design of the in-game progression system for Star Wars Battlefront II to be launched on March 21st.
    Progression is now linear.
Star Cards, or any other item impacting gameplay, will only be earned through gameplay and will not be available for purchase.
Instead, you’ll earn experience points for the classes, hero characters, and ships that you choose to play in multiplayer.
If you earn enough experience points to gain a level for that unit, you'll receive one Skill Point that can be used to unlock or upgrade the eligible Star Card you'd like to equip.
You'll keep everything you’ve already earned and unlocked.
You will keep all of the Star Cards, heroes, weapons, or anything else you have already earned.
What you have earned will still be available to use with this update regardless of how much or little progress you have already made.
Crates no longer include Star Cards and cannot be purchased.
Crates are earned by logging in daily, completing Milestones, and through timed challenges.
Inside of these crates, you'll find Credits or cosmetic items, such as emotes or victory poses, but nothing that impacts gameplay.
Starting in April, you’ll be able to get appearances directly through in-game Credits or Crystals.
They’re also going to be rolling out a bunch of new mods over the coming months.

A proposed net neutrality law in California would replace the repealed federal regulations, and even go beyond them by banning payments for data cap exemptions.
If passed, the bill would ban AT&T's Sponsored Data and Verizon's "FreeBee" data
"The [California] bill prohibits ISPs from blocking, speeding up or slowing down websites, applications, and services; charging online companies for access to an ISP's customers and blocking those that do not pay; and from entering into deals with online companies to put them in a fast lane to the ISP's customers,"
The California bill is notable for prohibiting ISPs from charging "access fees" that online services would have to pay in order to send data to broadband consumers.
"None of the other [state] bills have done this and it's one of the loopholes that ISPs will use (if it’s not closed) to extract payments from edge providers,"

Plattsburgh NY has put an 18-month moratorium on commercial cryptocurrency mining in order to preserve natural resources, the health of its residents, and the “character and direction” of the city.
Plattsburgh gets cheap power from the St. Lawrence River, driving down electricity costs for residents, but it exceeded its allotted amount of hydropower in December and January, according to a local newspaper.
Some complained that their bills surged as much as $300.
    - i’ve also read monthly bills increased $10
During the moratorium, the city will not consider new applications for commercial cryptocurrency mining.
Those who break the rules face up to $1,000 for each day of violation.
Local power companies in NY are now allowed to raise electricity rates for cryptocurrency miners.
In the Village of Akron, a cryptocurrency mining operation requested a 5 MW increase in electricity delivery.
"If Akron were to comply with the request at existing rates, Akron’s annual average bulk power supply costs would have increased 54 percent with a direct impact on retail rates,"

Under "special abilities," he wrote "electronics tech or design engineer. digital." He added, "From Bay near Hewlett-Packard."
The auction house initially estimated the letter was worth $50,000.
Two other bits of Jobs memorabilia were also sold in the auction.
A Mac OS X manual signed by Jobs sold for $41,806,
A newspaper clipping signed by Jobs sold for $26,950.
The year after filling out this application, Jobs found a job at Atari, then a two-year-old startup.

    Here's what I liked:

    - Interactive venues: loved the case toss, bungee race, pugilist sticks. Things to do between announcements and t-shirt tosses. One of the things I love about an event like, say, PAX, is that there's tons of stuff to DO, not just look at. Keep me busy.
    - The meet-and-greet: loved that you guys were down on the floor with us plebs, shaking hands and kissing babies.
    - Vendor booths: MOAR. Would love to see more vendors with more stuff, more giveaways, more games.
    - VR!
    - Video  games!
    - Life-sized standees: those things were hilarious.
    - The auction: pretty funny stuff!
    - The space: good size for the amount of attendees; busy on the floor but not cramped, space in the rafters if the introverts need to decompress.

Here's what I think could be improved on:

    - Security: you guys had, easily, $10k of swag loosely guarded by a dude or two. If it's the same setup this year, you guys are gonna have a bad time. Keeping the swag out on display is great, but a velvet rope and a mean-lookin' dude isn't enough. I would suggest making it less easily accessible.
    - Other security: the door prizes were AMAZING. Of course, I got none of them, such is my lot in life. However, if I were a less honest and upright citizen, I might have considered convincing Nick (by possibly nefarious means) to call out the numbers that myself and my friends had in our possession. Oh look, we just walked away with several thou in gear! How pleasing. I'd suggest attaching identifiers to each sold ticket and drawing from that data, rather than the easily-gamed stubs.
    - More VR!
    - More video games! BYO rig LAN party? The logistics are insane but when has that ever stopped you guys?
    - Options to purchase merch: there were none. That was, in my opinion, a massive opportunity wasted. I had money burning a hole in my pocket. It could have been yours.
    - The auction: nothing there I actually wanted. Again, I felt that that was a missed opportunity. I understand you're not about to auction off embargoed chips or vendor samples, but there must be a few choice pieces of Scrapyard Wars memorabilia kicking around.
    - The venue itself: while in some ways the arena was perfect (size, food vendors already present, less-expensive location) I definitely feel there are other options - ones with better sound and less janky equipment. I would BLOODY LOVE IT if the Vancouver downtown convention centre could be used. Parking sucks and it's expensive, but it's the big leagues. Maybe if LTX grows a bit? That shit's world-class.
    - My kid's prolly old enough to bring this year without being bored or easily exhausted. Maybe stuff that would appeal to the pre-teens? It's a bit of an ask but I wasn't the only parent there. Just a thought.

The old thread in the vBulletin forum got lost in the migration (don't worry I still have access to it and I'll still look at it) so I'm creating a new one.

    Guidelines
       1. Video should be possible to watch in 1-2 minutes.  2. No elaborate props. If we can't shoot it in the white box with a couple of demonstrative pieces, it's probably not feasible.  3. Keep it simple! The idea here is to simplify computer concepts to the point where your mom can understand it. Not looking for "how to peel the ramspreaders off your memory"    I will read these suggestions, but I may not reply to this thread very often. That doesn't mean I'm not paying attention, it just means I'm busy creating lots of new video content     If you haven't heard of Tech Quickie, it's another YouTube channel we run for paid content and the ever-popular "Fast As Possible" series.   Techquickie's channel - YouTube   http://youtube.com/techquickie   Learn about the latest cool technology in only a couple minutes! Few corrections about stuff said during the wan show:

    1) "heat is bad for batteries"
No, not always. "too much" heat is bad, but moderate heat is good because it helps the electrical energy to chemical energy conversion happen faster.
Batteries can charge and discharge at higher C rates when at higher temps (like 30C-40C) compared to ambient.
When you get to sub-0C then things start getting very bad for the charge and discharge rates.

    2) "trickle charging"
Neither wireless chargers nor regular cable chargers trickle charge.
All manufacturers are aware that you NEVER trickle charge lithium batteries, and all modern phones and laptops will stop charging the battery completely when it is full, even when left on the charger.
The circuitry in the phone or laptop will only start charging the battery again if it drops below a certain voltage.

Nvidia released a teaser this morning for a new Titan X Collector’s Edition.
There’s no mention of specs but we can see a new reference design with:
more lighting with a green light clearly illuminating the graphics card’s vapor chamber and heatsink fin array
lighting could be customizable, as in one frame of the video there’s a second glowing red graphics card
It also seems like the fan on this new GPU could stick out from the frame with its own acrylic element
It’s possible that Nvidia will announce the Titan X Collector’s Edition at CES 2018, especially considering it has a scheduled keynote at the show.

Broadcom could launch its bid as soon as this weekend.
It is likely to be mainly made up of cash, with 10% or 20% in stock

During that time the 3 male thieves, who have not been caught, managed to break in and take off in a white Dodge van
UPS and Apple are working with police on the investigation.
Each phone that was stolen had its IMEI serial number catalogued along with a description.

During the opening ceremonies of Blizzcon 2017, Blizzard announced that World of Warcraft will receive an official classic-style “vanilla” server.
    Why now?
"This is something that we’ve continued to hear from current players, from former players, from people who work on World of Warcraft, even people working at Blizzard who are like, hey, you should find a way."
“We want to reproduce the game experience that we all enjoyed from the original, classic WOW,”
Fans have worked on making their own vanilla servers over the years, some of which Blizzard Entertainment has shut down over copyright and other issues.
The official Classic version is currently in development
New 2FA System Relies on Taking Photos of Ordinary Objects
    Source 1: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/researchers-devise-2fa-system-that-relies-on-taking-photos-of-ordinary-objects/

Scientists have created a custom two-factor authentication system named Pixie that relies on users taking a photo of a personal object.
Pixie works by requiring users to choose an object- like their watch or parts of their body- as their 2FA key.
When they set up the Pixie 2FA protection, they take an initial photo of the object that will be used for reference.
Every time users try to log into their account again, they re-take a photo of the same object, and an app installed on their phone compares the two photos.
it does not use remote servers -. All image recognition operations are handled locally
Because only the user knows what that object is, an attacker cannot intercept SMS communications or exploit flaws in the SS7 protocol to hijack the 2FA process like they can with SMS verification codes
Even if the attacker knows the user's object, users can take the photo only at certain angles or only of a small section of the object.
In automated tests, Pixie achieved a false accept rate below 0.09% in a brute force attack with 14.3 million authentication attempts — nine wrong identifications every 10,000 login attempts.
In a test with 42 participants that took place over eight days in three different sessions, researchers say that "Pixie outperforms text-based passwords on memorability, speed, and user preference."
You can get the app from GitHub repository and test it out. (Source 2)
Users should be careful not to choose perishable objects like food

A former University of Iowa student has been arrested by the FBI on federal computer-hacking charges in a high-tech cheating scheme in which he allegedly obtained advanced copies of tests and changed grades for himself and classmates.
The 22 year old carried out the scheme by secretly installing keyloggers in computers in university classrooms and labs that allowed him to record what his professors typed, including their credentials to log into university grading and email systems
Enabling him to intercept exams and test questions in advance and to repeatedly change grades on tests, quizzes and homework assignments
The FBI says Graves changed his grades more than 90 times over a 21-month period, and changed grades on numerous occasions for at least five other students.
He was arrested on Tuesday and is charged with intentionally accessing a computer without authorization to obtain information, and knowingly transmitting a computer program to cause damage. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The university spent $68,000 investigating the breach and improving IT security.
The university warned students that those involved could face expulsion or suspension.

    Scientists weigh life
    Source: https://techcrunch.com/2017/10/26/scientists-weigh-life/

Scientists have created a scale that can measure the mass of single cells “monitor how [the cell’s]  weight changes over time … with a resolution of milliseconds and trillionths of a gram.”
This system let the researchers see that cells exhibit second-to-second weight fluctuations while alive but these fluctuations stop when they die
    How does it work?
The cells, which usually weigh about two to three nanograms, are weighed under controlled conditions in a cell culture chamber. The weighing arm, a tiny wafer-thin, transparent silicon cantilever coated with collagen or fibronectin, is lowered to the floor of the chamber, where it nudges and picks up a cell. “The cell hangs on the underside of a tiny cantilever for the measurements,”
