In order to have stable core and memory clocks to avoid bigger fps flactuation the card "throttles" performance on purpose to a more stable clock

Valve claims that only 9.4% of current gaming rigs are ready for VR... but as that number is based on the results of the Steam Hardware Survey, we don't think that it paints an accurate picture of the proportion of gaming PCs that are ready for VR that people actually intend to use for VR gaming.

So, being a part of this awesome forum community full of enthusiasts, we decided to see if we could paint a more accurate picture of the current state of the "VR for PC" market.

If you plan on using your gaming PC for VR, please take part in this test. Run the SteamVR Performance Test that Valve currently has available (through steam, you can find it at this link), and once you have your results, please do the following:

    1. Comment below listing the following specs of your PC:
    Rig name
    Cpu
    Gpu
    Ram
    Score

    2. Add a screenshot of your SteamVR Performance Test results.

    3. Answer the poll question in this thread.

And that is all we need! Thanks so much for taking part in this fun little survey - let's see how many of you are truly ready for VR gaming!

If you thought this was cool and want to take part in another fun survey that we have here on the forum, check out @Jumper118's Cinebench R15 thread here.

400$ is a ripoff for a ~500$ CAD CPU that is 5 generations old. Fair price should be ~270$ CAD for the 4790K, and ~150$ CAD for a 4670K. I would say, the 4690K could be upped to ~160$ CAD because it has stronger internal power delivery but 4670K will suffice for most people deciding between the two.

As of right now, I would never EVER recommend a motherboard from Gigabyte (or their gaming brand Aorus). Trust me, you do not want to have to go through infinite boot loops for absolutely no legitimate reason.

    RAM like that is correct.
On basically all boards with 4 slots, RAM slots 1 and 3 work together, slots 2 and 4 also work together.
On the boards in the last couple of years I have seen them recommend using slot 2 and 4 first, then afterwards if you add more use slot 1 and 3.

    So yea, this is correct.

9th gen can work on any 300 series chipset officially. However, a BIOS update may be required depending on when you bought the motherboard.

If you require Intel, then how about instead of going with the mainstream platform and go with the Xeon E CPUs on the LGA1151 platform? (specifically the 6 core CPUs)

For CAD, the 8700K and even the 8700 will beat the 9700K. Specifically something like Autodesk Inventor Pro 2019, that will use up a bunch of threads, at the very least from what I have seen it can take advantage of 16 threads (out of 16, on a Ryzen 7 1700 system), maybe can use more but I personally haven't tested it.

If you need reliability, you will want the Xeon platform, not necessarily the i7-8700. I should add that the 8700K does have all the business features unlike previous unlocked CPUs.

I think (by multiplier) it's 2800MHz? Though the 2666 multiplier is the last one with good enough stability for timings tuning. It's BCLK after that

Berfs1 reacted to Jurrunio in DDR3 Ram Overclocking (help)
Sand Bridge and Ivy Bridge IMCs arent nearly as weak as you think. The 16x multiplier giving 2133MHz limit on Sandy Bridge is way below its capabilities and these CPUs dont even need changing the SA and IO voltage to reach it. Ivy has a lot more multipliers and even 2666 is doable with appropriate tuning.

EDIT: for 214$ USD, you have to be stupid to buy this. Also it is not sold by Newegg, it is sold by uh, OutletPC.... idk why they cant sell it on their own store...

EDIT2: I seriously don't know why they are using two different motherboards in the pictures. Regardless, I recommend you not to buy it.

You need to look for an "AM4 motherboard with a USB 3.1 G2 header". Type C is not definitively USB 3.0 or USB 3.1. However, most front panel Type C ports are G2 (10Gbps), so you will want to find a motherboard that has that header. But do check the case you are getting, as that may have the Type C header as a normal USB 3.0 header.

Adding on to that, the RAM may be unstable, so I would recommend the OP to enable XMP if not already enabled, if it is already enabled, then take one RAM stick out and see if that fixes your issues. If the RAM is unstable, it can cause the OS to start corrupting, however it seems like a hardware problem more than a OS problem at this point.

Berfs1 got a reaction from Bananasplit_00 in Can I overclock
For an i3-2100, you can safely go up to ~104 MHz, after that it depends on your chip. Some i3s can hit 105.5, some cant go over 104. Since the multiplier is 31x, I would say 104 MHz is definitely achievable. Just make sure your RAM can handle that, as it will go from 1066 to ~1109, 1333 to ~1387, or 1600 to 1664. Oh, that is assuming you know how to overclock on an H61-based motherboard.

I should mention, I hope you know your 4790K system can already be upgraded by tuning the memory. They typically can hit over 1800 MHz RAM speeds (900 actual), and with higher rated RAM kits, they can hit upwards of 2600 MHz (after that it depends on your motherboard or IMC). If you didn't already, also consider overclocking your CPU as that gives you a greater boost.
