Q6600 vs i3 2100

So is it an upgrade from q6600 to i3 2100 or not? Usage of PC, small video editing (not professional), Internet browsing the and light gaming.

It probably won't be much different, is the upgrade free?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Assuming the i3 motherboard is good, I'd only consider it if you can find an i7 2000 series for cheap and the VRM can handle the i7, or just put a fan over the VRM even if it's crap.

Might get lucky with a Z chipset board, but probably not.

Are you deciding between some used PCs? Because if you want to do gaming try and save up or find an AMD APU that can do gaming without a graphics card. a Ryzen APU build is like $350 EUR

Where I live it's hard to find cheap i7 even if it's old one, and yes I'm looking for used PC's and so far all of them are overpriced and PC will be for my Little brother who don't do heavy gaming but mostly just games like Minecraft and geometry dash and he likes to edit videos.

from what i can see the i3 isn't much of an upgrade over the q6600

Do you already own the q6600?

And there's no like EU wide ebay or something? Because that probably has a lot of PC options.

Yes I own it, and it's already in a PC but it's getting kind of old, mb is from 2006, it had a graphics card but it for no reason died( maybe of age)

Well for the most basic of basic stuff on the cheap you'd want to find something like this with dual channel RAM, at least it'll be able to do some 720p gaming then, Intel's graphics are much slower, though their CPU side is faster naturally.

The Q6600 can be overclocked to fairly high speeds. Compared to an i3-2100, you actually may wanna save the Q6600 as it is more powerful when overclocked. Could you tell us the specs of the system? What is really important is the motherboard, which can determine your final overclocking capability.

Oh definitely use DDR3 (you will probably be limited to DDR3-1066 or 1333 if you are lucky), also here is a tool you can use to overclock your FSB. SetFSB is helpful when you know the IC your motherboard uses for FSB. This works on LGA775 and older motherboards that use FSB. Esentially, you want to find the PLL chip on the motherboard (it is usually a rectangular black IC that is nearby a silver oval shaped component) and find the model of the IC in SetFSB. Then, you can adjust the FSB frequency of that motherboard, and thus the CPU. I will let you know first, your Q6600 runs on a 9x multiplier and a 1066 MHz FSB, which turns down to 266 for the base clock (BCLK). When you adjust that number, you change the frequency of the CPU. Higher is faster and better, so long as your system does not crash. You can also use Pasi123's reply to manually adjust the FSB strap, which will force your system to run at an FSB of 1333 and BCLK of 333 MHz, if stable. If it does not work, then you will have to revert to original configuration and use the SetFSB method only.

setfsb_2_2_134_98.zip

EDIT: when overclocking, I suggest you also download CPU-Z, to monitor the frequencies as the frequency monitor in SetFSB is inaccurate. CPU-Z will also show the voltage your CPU cores are running at, as well as the memory type and speed, and timings. In the motherboard section of CPU-Z, it will also tell you what chipset is installed in your motherboard.

So I waited a bit and got better deal, bought i5 2310 for 40€ whit Mobo Asus b75m-a, 1tb WD green Hdd and 550 psu, only there is no GPU and only 2gb ram, but other than that I think it's a good deal.

Tnx for help guys :)
