TBF I wouldn't buy anything with less than 4 cores/8 threads due to the massive use of cores in recent years.  The use of multi-core CPUs is increasing rapidly

You obviously didn't take my advice  so I'll try to help you out.

How do you know in any of these supposed examples that there were not issues elsewhere causing the problems?  That's right, you don't.  You're just speculating, which is something we do great on LTT.  We just love to make shit up around here.

Outside of overclocking the CPU itself, memory issues and CPU cache, specifically those run out of spec, cause a great majority of "freezing" issues.  You need a lot more than a bunch of examples of folks who can figure out a problem before you start blaming an entire architecture for the problem.

Its definitely not your cpu, most likely your motherboard. There has never been a bug in the architecture like this. My skylake processor (when I had it) worked fine.

JJS76 reacted to Morgan MLGman in opinions on the i3 7350k
Of course the i5. Jesus christ did anyone even consider the 7350K? Understand this:

    Cost: i3-7350K rig + a Z270 board (since those are required to OC the chip) + a decent cooler >>> i5-6500 + H110/B150/H170 board
    Now performance: OC'd i3-7350K <<<< i5-6500.

See, the 7350K could be a good CPU, but the price killed it. Dammit it costs as much as an i5 and is still essentially a dual-core.

    This article is total bullshit.

    - They changed the cooler from a Thermalright 6 to a Corsair H110i to an NZXT Kraken X62
    - They changed the voltage from 1.34 to 1.264 to 1.344
    - They changed the clockspeed from 5GHz to 4.7GHz to 5GHz again

There's no way they could possibly draw any kind of conclusion from such a BS test where basically every variable changed, let alone a conclusion where temps decreased by 30 degrees. They might as well have used a different CPU altogether.

Solely gaming? The i7 6700K. The i7 6800K also doesn't overclock as well.

EDIT: And yet people are saying the i5 6600K is all you need for gaming... they're wrong.

JJS76 reacted to Morgan MLGman in 6700K OR 6800k FOR GAMING?
    Oh that's not true. 6600K will hold back highest-end GPUs in a way that a 6700K wouldn't.

6700K has higher IPC and usually overclocks better than a 6800K while being cheaper, so for purely gaming, 6700K should be your choice as it should be a little bit better for less money. 6800K is more powerful, but that doesn't mean it'll do better in gaming. It will be better in most other tasks, but not that particular one.

Wait for the 7700k, I know I am. The price should be similar to the 6700k, and it will perform a little better. Plus, look at all those sevens, i7 7700k. Pretty sweet. ?

    The reality is this:

At this point in time, there is no reason to get an AMD CPU unless you are on an extreme budget. Intel CPUs will perform better in nearly every situation. Especially for gaming, an i5 will murder anything AMD currently has released.

JJS76 got a reaction from Efanel in Skylake Voltage
    @Efanel
I try to keep voltage under 1.3 with air coolers, 1.35 won't hurt too much.

As far as water goes not really sure, I'm cheap and have never tried an AIO before.

As far as heat vs Voltage

Some passive components, such as capacitors have a max voltage rating, which if exceeded can result in failure of the dielectric (insulator) resulting in excessive current, and ultimately smoke. Generally, exceeding voltage ratings of passive compnents causes insulation failure. With active components, excessive voltage will cause a breakdown of the internal junctions of the diode, transistor, etc, which will also allow excessive current, heat and some smoke.

So both are bad for wiring and electronics, I'm cheap, so I do everything on the safe side. I don't want to fry my cpu. But I'm definitely over cautious, so most likely you will be perfectly fine under 1.4v if temp isn't too high.

    1. What should you do if a motherboard does not start?

Start troubleshooting. Make sure everything is seated properly in their respective connectors, make sure that the RAM is in the right slot, make sure the video cable is plugged in or the PSU is switched on (trust me, that happens a lot), etc. If you have to, take out the CPU and reseat it. That helps sometimes.

    2. What should you do if you see a BSOD, and how do you debug?

Normally it displays an error code, and with newer versions of Windows it even have a QR code. Write down the code or remember it, then Google it and see what it means. Usually it points to drivers, hardware, power issues, etc. From that info you can then proceed to see what caused the BSOD.

    3. BIOS settings

It varies from board to board, but there are two types of BIOS. Legacy and UEFI, UEFI being the newer technology. Usually the most you need to do is change boot order (so that a specific drive has priority when booting), maybe enable XMP for high speed memory. enable AHCI Mode for newer drives, etc. CPUs have a base clock and a multiplier that 'multiplies' that base clock to give you the frequency it's at. Changing the multiplier to something higher is overclocking. You have to change voltage as well once you increase the multiplier high enough, so that the OC is stable (the CPU is receiving enough power).

    4. How do you overclock graphics cards?

Most of it is done in Windows through various overclocking software. Some even let you overclock from the driver suite (like AMD's Crimson). Use this guide for thorough details: https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocking/wiki/gpu/general

There's a lot of stuff I can help you answer, I've been building and troubleshooting for years, as have others on the forum. You're more than welcome to message me if you have any other questions, I'm sure some others are willing to do the same.

depends on how much money you want to put towards your graphics card or entire PC. I would recommend a gtx1060 for that build. If you want to upgrade your cpu too to an i5 6500 or 6600k then it would be reasonable to get a 1070
