Get a decent board and the i7 8700K is at 5GHz with a BIOS setting, just like Memory and XMP.  Even if he's not all that savvy, it's a single setting and done.

But yea... may as well add the "wait for Zen 22342422dsfr23452", cuz the naming scheme is ass stupid.

Yeh if he's not going to really OC more than .2 GHz then it's probably best to grab the i7

    Also slight rant:
Oh boy, the "B" word! I think it's important to understand what OP wants and what OP is doing before dropping the "B" word because if anything, the "B" word should be something you drop after checking out everything else. Unless it's clearly obvious something's wrong.

For example, TechSpot managed to achieve the same minimum frame rates in Battlefield 1 using a Core i5-6600K and a i7-6700K. And those minimums are way higher than what OP is reporting. A few other places report minimum frame rates way higher than what OP is reporting. Therefore, I think this isn't a bottleneck issue because there's clearly some evidence that the i5-6600K can get those performance numbers.

DDR5 is not close enough to production and no existing chipsets support it, so they're probably going to be disappointed. Like it's probably not going to be a thing until 2020, and again, new chipset required.

Casual Cube got a reaction from purshaq in Rendering - RTX 2060 vs Vega 56
Hey guys, So my office needs a build for our new render position. I'm putting together something budget and will be buying the following parts -

    CPU - Ryzen 2600
    Mobo - Asrock HDV B450M
    Ram - Corsair 16Gb 3000Mhz
    Storage 1 - Kingston 120Gb SSD
    Storage 2 - WD Blue 1TB HDD
    PSU - Corsair CX550M 80+ Bronze

    GPU Option 1 - Zotac Gaming RTX 2060 IceStorm - 6GB
    GPU Option 2 - Saphire Radeon Pulse RX Vega 56 - 8GB

I've reached a conundrum with the GPU section because it was my understanding that the Vega 56 was one of the best budget options for rendering tasks.
However, the slightly more expensive RTX2060 seems to be a bit more, (shall I say) solid option with less chance for hitches or other notoriety like crashing.

If anyone has any experience with the two for blender/3dsmax or other mainstream rendering apps, please let me know below. All opinions are welcome.
    Thanks!

If its Blender then Vega56 is a lot better choice. You usualy want more VRAM for 3D renders as those tasks can be very VRAM demanding and Vega has 8GB vs RTX 2060 which has only 6GB.
As for what other SW they use, it depends. If it can use OpenCL then Vega56 is usualy a better choice. If it can only use CUDA then you have to go with RTX 2060 (heck, GTX 1070 or 1070ti may actualy make more sense as it has more VRAM).

3ds max really likes vram from my understanding.

More is better, so if you are working on an animation that needs more than 6gb of vram, the vega 56 will yield better performance strictly by that fact alone.

So, back in 2018 blender finally picked up support for cuda acceleration officially, and there are a handful of engines in 3ds that can make use of cuda acceleration, however, when it comes to straight number crunches the vega does just take the cake. As far as stability is concerned I personally have had far more issues with nvidias drivers, but thats a personal thing, just dont let the whole mindset that amd has shit drivers get to you, its just a worn out meme at this point. Their stability is near identical.

Personally, I would probably still go for the 2060, but mostly just because of iray.
The added vram of the 56 is really nice though...

Thanks man, I'm really happy with the cahnge.
imo the MAX is beefy af compared to the other two. The prism is taller than the stealth but doesnt have enough "hunk" to soak up the heat you know?

This should be a PSA cus I couldnt get enough info on it before.

I have an R5 2600 that I used with the stock stealth cooler. My first horizontal facing cpu cooler and I loved the aesthetics.
Sadly, I couldnt overclock worth a damn, and just let it turbo to 3.700 while hitting 70-75. (I live in the mideast)

Recently I built a PC for a client and he got himself a 2700X but wanted an aftermarket cooler I grabbed the unused Wraith MAX rgb and by golly...

It turbo'd to 3.850 from the get go and kept under 50c idle. I was blown away and now I just used this headroom to OC to 4.1 at 1.35V and its kicking STILL UNDER 60.
People out there should know that a wraith MAX rgb is a stylish af cooler that also does performs brilliantly.

Friend of mine upgraded from the stealth to the prism, basically the same as the max. Didn't see the drastic gains you did but it's clearly better with that nice big cooler and XFR doing work.

Casual Cube got a reaction from r2724r16 in Pc wont boot, no display. noticed smoke
Hey guys. Im having some trouble with the PC.
Just changed the cables, cooler and made the mistake of swapping my EVGA G3 cables for some GQ ones. Long story short i noticed the PSU made a faint click and didnt even turn on so I swapped back the psu cables. One by one. Then I noticed that it did turn on, but i saw smoke coming out of one of the tiny modules. I swapped more cables and it happened one more time. Each time I would immediate kill the power to be safe. Now all the cables are back the way it should be and its running, lights and fans on everything on. But the display signal isnt out putting. The debug lights never even turned on and im noticing some of the lights on the back stopped working. Any help? Im happy to answer questions.

I'd grab an 8700K and a decent motherboard, if you can for 450-500 CAD.

If you can't find that then the 2600 was a really good setup in the first place.
