oldnick got a reaction from Slayerking92 in How long did the last mining craze (2017-2018) effect on GPUs lasted for ?
I am just wondering if anyone have a precise idea about when exactly did the mining craze of 2017 started effecting pc hardware (mainly GPUs) and when did it end and prices and availability return to normal

I know the current situation isnt exactly the same (becase of covid etc..) but I still want to know

It lasted until BTC and ETH significantly dropped, but even then it has a lasting effect on the market.
10-series cards higher than a 1060 were still hard to get for good prices and the AMD Radeon 500-series supplies and prices stayed high for a long time after too.

For the higher end cards, it really took until the next series came out for normal prices to return (inflated still if we look at price/performance, but normal-er).

oldnick reacted to Radium_Angel in can i use single rank and dual rank ecc ram (of the same size) in the same channel ?
    Maybe.

ECC RAM is of course, Error Checking and Control (or Correction) and is aimed for servers, which demand perfect results from the RAM.
Servers that I have worked with, do not like you to mix and match RAM (they will throw non-fatal errors about non-matching RAM) but I can't speak directly for the NAS.

IMO, you'd be better off with matched RAM, but if the NAS powers up and accepts the MnM RAM, then consider yourself lucky.

I cannot verify that is it the same across all memory types but from what I know RAM of different ranks cannot be mixed. I tried mixing dual rank with quad rank and no combination of swapping slots allowed it to POST.

Perhaps it's possible with your hardware but the fact it doesn't work on mine isn't a good indicator that it will on yours.

i just bought hp z400 mobo\cpu combo for a good price but i didnt knew that it uses a proprietary psu

i tried to boot the system few times and since it wont boot up i search online and find out it has different layout (see pic)

    so my questions are :

did i damage the mobo by trying to boot the pc multiple times ?
also can i buy an extension instead of soldiering the wires (i never did that before)? if so please send a link for that extension (prefer ebay)

Yes, it will clear the ram. You can see compatibility with motherboards on noctua's website: http://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-u14s/comp

HDDs are different than flash memory though.
    You can read through this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2712640?tstart=0
But it looks like the general consensus is, if it had power running through it when the water hit, you're out of luck.
Is it? Unfortunate. I don't use Apple products so I'm not sure. Though I imagine the cost involved in getting the information off of flash memory embedded in a device isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm using a Noctua NH-D15 in an mITX case (Phanteks Evolv ITX). I disagree with people who say ITX have bad cooling (at least on the CPU side of things). #notallitxcases

I actually measured this once and it's 160mm from the bottom coldplate to top of the heatpipe, this when the middle fan is lowered as low as possible.
In my case the ram sat below the finstack cutout, so ram clearance is actually 64mm, at least with motherboards I've used this cooler.

Also I have never managed to use the second fan because of the close 24pin wiring location in case of 95% of M-ITX motherboards, or even if you manage to bend the cable enough and raise the fan, the total height gets over 180mm.

Yes, as long as they work as button do, they will work. The power button is just an element to close the circuit so the power can run. And obviously you have to wire it from each 1 pin to the + power pin and 1 pin to the - power pin (It doesnt matter which pin you connect with each pin, you only have to close the circuit!).

"Momentary push button" is exactly what you need. Other specs shouldn't matter as I cant think of a momentary button that would not work. I can see on ebay some listings are using the word "tactile" which appears to be the same as momentary, just avoid "latching" switches.
yep those will work. I cant see anything wrong with your plan.

TLDR: as long as you dont try putting your "oldnick" into it, it will be fine

i just removed the heat sink and the paste doesnt look too great (first time in 6 years maybe )

but the fan is noisy i think it hits the heat sink surface so i has to change it (hopefully with some cheap chinese cooler that works will for overclocking)

or am i better off buying evo 212 from the start ?

I don't think you'll need the Noctua cooler, the i5 6500 isn't that hard to cool and from what I saw with mine, the boxed cooler is doing it's job
that's 40$ you could use elsewhere
