When 3440 X 1440 monitors came out they were 60hz. I bought one. A little later I bought a GTX 1080 and everything ran over 60fps. A few months later I upgraded to a GTX 1080 ti and it was a total waste at that refresh rate and resolution.

The world has changed since then.
    My RTX 2080 ti can't run a 120hz 3440 X 1440 like my GTX 1080 ran my 60hz version.

Going by the "Displays" part of the forum 2560 X 1440 144hz is the most desired monitor. None of the recent AAA games I have bought can run close to 144fps at that resolution even with my overclocked RTX 2080 ti and 5ghz CPU.

When I ran 1080p 60hz monitors for years I only upgraded GPUs for more vram. I was already getting enough frames.
My 2011 vintage GTX 570 could do 120fps in Skyrim when it came out. The vram was for modding.

As far as I am concerned we have not caught up to the current most popular monitor like we did with 1080p 60hz. Until we do that there is no long term value of any of the GPUs on the market today.

It depends on your performance target. If you want 4k 144hz, then nothing short of 2x 2080 Ti's is going to get that done. If you're going for something more reasonable like 4k 60hz or 1440p 144hz, then a high mid-range card like a 2080/2070 Super is going to be better value.

Keep in mind that 5-6 years ago, the top dog card was a 780 Ti, which is crushed by a mid-range card today. You're always going to have a smoother experience upgrading a mid-range card every 3 years than overpaying for a flagship card and never upgrading.

For 1080p the 4GB is enough... That said it's not rare to find the 8GB priced similarly so it's more a matter of the cheapest you come across.

The 1070 will be extremely bottlenecked by the CPU. Not worth. The 1060 is also a waste since the 570 is extremely good value. Don't buy based on brand, buy based on what's good for you

That CPU is fine for 60hz gaming just grab an RX 470/480/570/580 they should be cheap on the used market, around $100 USD

With the new IPC enhancements in Ryzen 3000, I would imagine that the 8700 doesn't even have that much of an advantage, if any at all anymore, in Adobe applications.

I could be wrong though. Are there any benchmarks that showcase this?

monitors are the first thing i'd look at when planning a build, decide on a refresh rate that you want then the resolution, so far the only people that actually can see/feel a difference on anything above 144hz is competitive shooters.

So generally i'd like to stick with 144hz, avoiding TNs, starting at ~200 bucks there's 1080p VA panels, pay a bit more and you get ips
around 500bucks you get wide gamut options with better colors etc.

for 1080p/144hz i'd say it's a good time to grab a vega 56 or a rtx 2060S (for dxr on upcoming games)

The fact you have freeysync is does something very important and that is when your frame rate drops it still gives you a smooth experience.  200hz is great but the only way your FPS will reach that is if you play 1080p no AA and low to medium but in CS:GO everything maxed out.  Just depends on the game.  However don't expect a big difference between 144hz and 200hz especially the fact you will never really reach 200fps with current AAA games unless you go low res and settings set to low and some people even need to play at 1400x900 then their FPS is 200 and then some.

Windows updates, believe it or not, can trigger bugs. Particuarly fixes to Spectre/Meltdown/Zombieload.

There were systems at the office that started crashing until the video drivers were updated, and the only thing that had changed was the update patches.

What's the exact model of computer you're on, and are you running 64-bit XP Pro? I ask because I've never seen an 8GB DDR2 DIMM and am pretty sure they were never built. If you're on a 32-bit OS, 8GB of RAM is kind of pointless as your system can't read more than 4GB.

Here is a review on the new APUs, which actually undoes my recommendation a bit:

It may be more beneficial to upgrade your ram and get a dedicated graphics card that will be able to gpu accelerate for you to help out with some of the heavy lifting.

If you can save, it may be beneficial to get a cheap first gen ryzen 5 1600 and a discrete card for a true upgrade.

However, I do stand by getting more RAM as a good place to start.

Jon Jon got a reaction from Dedayog in Is AMD lying to us about PCIe 4.0 performance
Honestly, PCI-E 4.0 is really only good for those that need the drive performance today.

It's significant for content creators with complex workloads, which really, X570 with a Ryzen 9 is perfect for.

I see zero benefit for people that game exclusively in the near term and arguably the far term.

I am willing to bet people will be itching for more CPU performance by the time PCI-E 3.0 is maxed out for gaming.

I would recommend upgrading your RAM first as that is the cheapest and will arguably have the most performance impact for under $200.

You could consider the new Ryzen 5 3400G as an upgrade along with the RAM.

I would just make sure your motherboard will support it after a BIOS update.

Absolutely. If AMD can release a sub $200 mid range card that can compete with yesterdays high-end cards (like the gtx 1070-1070ti), that would be incredible.

Polaris is 3 years old now, so it being phased out at this point would make sense.

I think a Navi to take on the GTX 1660ti for $199 would be a killer card.

We need more performance uplifts in existing price segments.

Yup if it was 1 and half months ago it would've been a steal but it's the market new releases just worth to wait and i assure you many people will probably upgrade from a 2070 so if you have access to a second hand marker near you look out u may find a 2070 new condition under warranty for 300 maybe but don't get one new as 5700xt blower 400$ one beats the 2070 all the way
Well if you're not going to upgrade the cpu then wait but not too long as you know some people will come and say new high end navi is coming. Nvidia getting mew stuff discount blah blah just the AIB launch for 5700xt and get one that suits you

The new Ryzen parts are far more power efficient than the first gen parts.

For example, my TDP skyrockets to 130W-150W depending on load and my X370-F hums along without issues.

I really want the community really stress test the older boards to see what they can/can't handle.

Honestly, part of the allure of going Ryzen two years ago was to eventually upgrade to a high end Zen 3 chip next year to max out the platform.

    B. And I mean if you're buying a 5700 you might as well spend the extra 50$ for the 5700xt with better performance.
