High Refresh Rate Gaming Recommendations / Discussion

Hey Everyone!

Due to a recent monitor failure, I used it as an opportunity to hop into the high refresh rate gaming space.

I currently am rocking a 200hz 2560x1080 monitor with Freesync.

My question is, what are your thoughts on high refresh rate gaming in terms of hardware requirements?

So far, I am honestly doing fine with esport titles on medium, settings (Can do Overwatch at around 180-200fps at all times with my current setup below.

I wonder what the break even point is with a Ryzen 7 1st Gen where it will be the bottleneck, all of that.

I am curious about your experiences and view points on this :).

Thanks!

The fact you have freeysync is does something very important and that is when your frame rate drops it still gives you a smooth experience.  200hz is great but the only way your FPS will reach that is if you play 1080p no AA and low to medium but in CS:GO everything maxed out.  Just depends on the game.  However don't expect a big difference between 144hz and 200hz especially the fact you will never really reach 200fps with current AAA games unless you go low res and settings set to low and some people even need to play at 1400x900 then their FPS is 200 and then some.

monitors are the first thing i'd look at when planning a build, decide on a refresh rate that you want then the resolution, so far the only people that actually can see/feel a difference on anything above 144hz is competitive shooters.

So generally i'd like to stick with 144hz, avoiding TNs, starting at ~200 bucks there's 1080p VA panels, pay a bit more and you get ips

around 500bucks you get wide gamut options with better colors etc.

for 1080p/144hz i'd say it's a good time to grab a vega 56 or a rtx 2060S (for dxr on upcoming games)
