The wording is interesting there...
"you don't have to"
Translation:
"technically you don't have to but I'm going to be super pissed and hold it over your head forever. oh you want something for YOUR birthday?? TOUGH!!! " lol
Bold is mine.
My ex would add :
Crying in front of of other people
In fact, one time she did it while we're sitting in a cafe, while there's 3 soldiers enjoying their time 2 tables away from us.
More context : Not even because I didn't buy her something, it was after we discussed something menial and I had different viewpoint.
I never wanted to punch someone that much before.

If you're in a relationship only because of gifts/money then it's not a relationship, it's an emotional scam.

Only issue I ever run into is when Wal-Mart doesn't want to process chip card transactions that day and will throw errors. Why even have a chip reader if it doesn't work and you have to swipe anyway. And it's EVERY terminal, so it's not a skimmer issue.
At this point, I use the Walmart app to pay for my stuff. I scan the matrix on the terminal display, and pay with my card. I don't know if it's as secure as Apple Pay though lmao - if I could, I'd totally use that instead.

It's faster as long as the self-checkout machine does not throw an error while scanning the last item
One of the stores I regularly go to doesn't even have scanners anymore at the checkout. You scan items while you're in the store with an app, or alternatively with a scanner you can get at the entry. Makes shopping really relaxing and quick.

I've seen that for Giant and BJ's, and I'm tempted to use it.
