MikkoP got a reaction from McMurderMonkey in My Das Keyboard got a new look!
Hi all!
A few weeks ago I ordered a piece of 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber film and keycaps from WASD Keyboards. The keycaps got finally from the customs, so I was able to put it all together! What do you think? I will definitely recommend this project!
Here's a picture of the finished keyboard.

MikkoP reacted to mcmad358 in 512GB MX100 Or 256GB 850 Pro?
512GB MX100, it is a solid SSD and the 850 pros arent worth the money especially when you have the option of twice the capacity! The MX100 will last quite awhile and will perform great.

512gb of coarse. In terms of performance they are very close and in my opinion the i would go for the double the space rather than the slight most likely unnoticeable performance boost.

In an $1800 build you should NOT be using an AMD CPU.

MikkoP got a reaction from alpenwasser in Recommendations for an 8 port RAID card
The LSI 9271-8i is a great card. I don't have it yet but it's already in the shopping cart to be ordered.
If you are connecting eight drives, you don't have any room for expansion. For regular HDDs you could get the 4i variant and Intel RES2SV240 expander. This way you can connect up to 20 drives without losing any performance. This performance thing is in theory of course. But in case of 20 drives it's your network that holds back the process.
BTW those are ridiculously expensive there.

Hope to be posting my new server system soon. I'll be adding LSI 9271-4i, Intel RES2SV240 and eight 3 TB WD Red drives.

MikkoP reacted to Emceeschw3pp3 in Linus' next build guide?
I personally would love to see an in-depth build guide for a NAS. I think Linus could make an awesome video on picking parts, assembling, and setting up a "personal cloud" NAS. Similar to his gaming and workstation build guides. Vote in the poll with your opinion on this subject and reply with an additional comments.

MikkoP got a reaction from alpenwasser in RAID Card Recommendation
I am about to buy a RAID controller myself too. I'll pick the LSI 9271-4i and Intel's RES2SV240 SAS expander and I am going to use these with seven WD Red 3 TB disks at first. You don't need an eight port controller to drive eight HDDs. But if you don't get a SAS expander, the maximum amount of hard drives you can connect is limited to the internal SATA port count of the controller. With the two cards I mentioned, I will be able to connect up to 20 hard drives to the controller. Theoritically speaking this would allow the drives to run at their max speeds. In the real world this isn't the case. But with a 4-port controller you are well over the safe side in terms of performance.
8-port controllers aren't cheap. They aren't quite two times the price of the 4-port versions but close. If you aren't running SSDs (which you are not), there's no benefit to go for an eight-port controller over a four-port one. That is, assuming you will be getting a SAS expander.

MikkoP reacted to LAwLz in AAC vs Vorbis vs FLAC blind test (can you hear the difference)
Hello everyone!
I was looking through the thread about favorite codecs and though it would be fun to see if people can actually hear the difference between let's say AAC and FLAC.
Now for those of you who don't know, FLAC is a lossless compression algorithm. It does not remove any sound, so if you rip a CD to FLAC, then the FLAC file will sound the same as the CD. If you rip it to a lossy format such as AAC or MP3, then some of the audio will be lost (usually notes humans can't hear anyway).
I have prepared some ~30 seconds audio clips from different songs. I have encoded them to AAC with various bitrate at ~320Kbps, Vorbis/OGG at ~224Kbps, and I have also threw in a lossless FLAC file.
All 3 files are originally from lossless FLAC files with a bitrate of ~1000Kbps. So, let's see if you guys can hear the difference between ~224Kbps, ~320Kbps and 1000Kbps.
I have picked a quite variety of music. Jazz, techno-ish, classic rock, pop, folk music-ish and so on.
All you guys need to do is listen to some or all of the songs, decide which one sounds worst, second best and best, and then say which number is which codec and bitrate. The number and codec are the same on all by the way, so if you for example say that 1 is FLAC, then 1 is FLAC on all songs. I have also fiddled with the file sizes, so don't try to cheat by looking at which one is biggest or smallest, and try to figure it out that way because it won't work. Also, all the files might be FLAC now, but that's because I have transcoded them back and forth. I started with a FLAC file, turned it into an AAC file, and then transcoded it back again. Since FLAC is a lossless codec, the new FLAC file will sound just like the AAC file did. I only did this so that you couldn't cheat and look at the file format.
TL;DR: Download the songs, listen to them and then tell me which one out of 1, 2 and 3 sounds the best, and which one sounds the worst.

The answers file tells you which file is which codec, but it is password protected and I won't release the key for a little while. It's just here so that I can't lie and change the answers.
Good luck and have fun.
The password can now be found on page 4.
List with full songs and song names can be found on page 5.

@tabascosauz UPS not for home? Why not? I have a server running 24/7 and I feel safer with a UPS than without. It smoothens the currrency, protecting from power losses and spikes caused by lightning etc.

MikkoP reacted to GoodBytes in My dream display, why doesn't it exist?
The Dell UP2414Q is the closest monitor to your need:
-> 4K 60Hz
-> GB-LED backlight
-> Color processor / Look Up Table
-> supports 10-bit colors (meaning the panel is most likely a true 8-bit panel, and uses AFRC to emulate the 10-bit colors, meaning it's a good start for great colors)
-> Comes color calibrated at the manufacture, with report: Adobe RGB and sRGB color profiles, ready to be selected on the monitor on screen menu.
-> Small bezel. It's not minimal, but it's small size that you com to expect form high end consumer grade monitors, floating around 1.5-1.7cm range
