    Hello again!

After finally getting a boot in to BIOS I have been running in to several hurdles with actually booting in to Windows. I have been trying different solutions online for a week and am hoping someone here can guide me in the right direciton because as of now I am completely out of clues as to what to try next. I will do my best to go through all of the troubleshooting steps I took.

    Installing Windows
When I first tried to install Windows, I would consistently and randomly crash during set up. I wouldn't BSOD, I would have no context at all as to why it crashed it would just crash. I've gone through the Windows installation process many times at this point but what works consistently to actually get through to the OS is to run on the iGPU to install Windows, then try to install the graphics card. When I'm actually in Windows running on the graphics card, my computer will randomly black screen. However, my computer is always stable when I boot in to safe mode.

    nvlddmkm
I assumed the issue was the graphics card, it seemed that the prevailing first step would be to run DDU (I have to do this in safe mode where it's stable), then install the latest graphics card drivers (I have it downloaded ona USB). This sometimes works, and when it does work it stops working after I turn my computer off then turn it on again. In fact it freezes when it shows the Asus bios logo and is presumably loading into windows.

Additionally several reddit posts pointed to looking at event viewer to see what was being spewed out. I noticed something called "nvlddmkm" throwing some errors. The above steps would sometimes but not always resolve these errors, but I eventually stumbled accross this article: https://ccm.net/computing/hardware/1975-how-to-fix-an-nvlddmkm-sys-error-message/ . Based on the instructions, I realised that I didn't have the "nvlddmkm.sys" file in my drive folder at all. So I followed its instruction to add the file to the drivers folder and it still sometimes throws the "nvlddmkm" errors followed by "WHEA-Logger" error spam.

    The errors are this:
Event 14, nvlddmkm The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: 0000(0000) 00000000 00000000 The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table. Event 17, WHEA-Logger A corrected hardware error has occurred. Component: PCI Express Root Port Error Source: Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express) Primary Bus:Device:Function:0x0:0x1:0x0 Secondary Bus:Device:Function: 0x0:0x0:0x0 Primary Device Name:PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_460D&SUBSYS_86941043&REV_02 Secondary Device Name: Whenever I see this at this point, I will boot in to safe mode, run DDU, reinstall nvidia drivers, then restart in to normal Windows. It will work until I turn off the computer then it will stop working. Sometimes it won't even boot into Windows. I have also tried running DDU and reinstalling the nvidia drivers all in safe mode then going to Windows. Again that sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't.

    Other Attempted Fixes
This other reddit thread seemed promising: https://www.reddit.com/r/EVGA/comments/m862r8/a_solution_for_those_experiencing_event_id_14/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Unfortunately, even after disabling Aura Sync by swapping to my iGPU to be able to get to Armoury Core (the Asus utility for my mobo) I was still crashing.

I also tried out this comment in the thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/EVGA/comments/m862r8/comment/i8dxq7u/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
My UEFI BIOS setting for display was set to AUTO so I set it to the pcie device and still no luck. The only display adapter I have now is either the Microsoft Default one right after I run DDU or the proper nvidia 3060ti after I install the driver.

Both XMP and Resizeable Bar are enabled in the bios and in the cases where I'm able to get in to Windows with the my GPU working GPU-Z seems to indicate Resizeable Bar is working as expected and CPU-Z reads the correct memory speeds of my RAM.

Mixed in usually right before the nvlddmkm errors (but not always) is this error from e2fexpress

Event 27, e2fexpress The description for Event ID 27 from source e2fexpress cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Intel(R) Ethernet Controller (3) 1225-V The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table.

    I am very tired 😪, I'm on EST and it's currently 3:56AM
Please let me know what other info I can provide to get this nailed down I've been troubleshooting this for basically my entire holiday break and I really wanted to have my PC setup before I go back to work Tuesday.
Thank you, I will get back to this tomorrow morning 🙏

This makes sense, but does turning it off overnight help? I know it still discharges a bit but my logic is that if the battery being off outweighs the damage done by turning it back on?

    Doesn't matter kinda.

Letting the Plug in at 100% does NOT harm the battery AT ALL.
The Charge elctronics will stop the charge once it reaches 100%, and only let a tiny little bit through, to keep it at 100% (or the Phone itself takes the power directly from the Plug, and battery will neither charge, nor discharge).

Kind of crappy that Android doesn't expose this functionality itself. I was hoping to avoid root, though I probably won't have much of a choice pretty soon as my phone sees regular hotspot use.

I think Linus' latest video on the topic covers this pretty well. According to that, the best state for batteries is at 50%. So if you would were to keep it at 40-60%, that would be best.
However in the real world, that's not possible. So what I do is I charge it to 60-70% before going to sleep, in the morning I plug it in, and bring it up to 90-100%. So the phone is around 50-75% most of the time.

Bare in mind that shadow play isn't as much of a necessity as you may think as OBS and Xplit can perform those tasks just fine.

In terms of finding you something with what you want, I'm not sure when University generally starts in Europe but if you can wait a month or two for when the newer mobile GPU's, the older laptops will drop in price and you're more likely to find something that would work as being a light gaming machine. Not to mention that Intel's Kaby Like processors are due soon as well so if possible wait.

if not consider looking at the Asus ROG line (the slimmer models of ourse), Lenovo Y series (they come with a harddrive but my friend has an older y50 and replaced the 2.5" HDD with an SSD), or perhaps something from the MSi line.

Since you aren't concerned about battery life, look for a Quad-core CPU (6th gen preferably), Nvidia GTX970M (960M might work as well, not 100% sure on that), and something with decent thermal performance. notebookcheck is a great website to look at that kind of stuff.

    Best of luck!

well, some games just require a mouse, and while you surely wont be using the steam controller for CS:GO, it's actually a pretty capable mouse.

If you really like the g303 design and features then yes you should get it. If you want something a little better for fps there are other options such as the corsair m65 pro rgb. Ive been using it for a couple of days and I love it already.

Most of what you do in first-year engineering will be in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.  You do not need a powerful laptop.  What you do need is a reliable laptop.  A gaming laptop will suck away your time and cause you to flunk out.  (besides, you already have a gaming desktop, so why would you want to spend $$$ on a laptop GPU which will just suck your battery life away, and will most likely be pathetic in performance in comparison to the desktop!)?

My suggestion is business-class gear, no GPU, a machine you can get stuff done on.  Get yourself a pair of full-sized LCDs.  And 3 or 4 Kensington locks for your LCDs and your laptop to lock everything down to a desk or something so it doesn't get stolen in the dorms (unless you're living at home).

Latitude E7470 on Dell Outlet is what I'd be looking at, a 1080p SSD model.

neoxid501 got a reaction from matthew81202 in Can a Surface really replace a laptop?
Okay it's really going to depend on you. I'm in college and one of my art major friends has a Surface Book and loves it. I tried the keyboard at a Microsoft Store (I was only there to try the HTC Vive I swear lol) and it was only "okay."

The real decider will be if you're going to use the Surface Book/Surface 4 more as a tablet than a laptop. I'm majoring in Software Engineering, since I'm not a tablet user anyway, I went for a Lenovo t460s with a touch screen and the Lenovo keyboards are well known for just being better than every other laptop (I mean they did buy IBM). However, if you don't want to lug around notebook to all your math lectures than the Surface isn't a bad option since it include that Note taking thing from Microsoft as long as you don't mind using your Surface to take down all your notes and study with.
