I just logged out & logged in to twitch, what a completely unrelated coincidence that right after re-logging in I got a prompt to update my password because "increased security"...

Morgan MLGman reacted to porina in Intel Arc - discrete GPUs get a name and date - TSMC confirmed!
    Summary
Intel have now revealed the name of their discrete GPU offerings, and will come under Intel ARC branding. They also give a window of Q1 2022 so they should be on the shelves no later than March next year. Feature wise they support DX12 Ultimate, so in that sense should be competitive against AMD and nvidia offerings. Actual price / performance will remain to be seen closer to the time.

Under the Arc umbrella we have 4 generational names in the pipeline. Starting with Alchemist, follows Battlemage, Celestial and Druid.

    My thoughts
Intel have been working on Xe graphics and we knew that included a discrete offering too. The end of the road to a product is in sight, although the Window extending to March next year might be a bit long for those hoping to see quick relief to the current GPU shortages. The codenames used are also interesting. To me, they're kinda generic fantasy/RPG like. Anyone know if there a more specific inspiration for those?

    Update added 19 Aug

Intel confirms it is using TSMC N6 process. Compared to the well known N7, this is not expected to give more performance but improves density.

Anandtech estimate peak FP32 performance to be 16.4 TFLOPS. For context with other GPUs, this is close to a 3060 Ti at 16.2 TFLOPS, sandwiched between 3070 at 20.3 TFLOPS and 3060 at 12.7 TFLOPS. Note FP32 performance does not necessarily scale with gaming performance so it may deviate from this.

This thread is not only wrong, but also entirely pointless.

I'm going to lock it, because there's no productive discussion resulting out of it.
OP, if you have specific problems please create a thread for those issues so maybe someone will help you resolve them. It's highly unlikely that it's something wrong with AMD CPUs in particular.

Yeah, that makes sense. In that case I'd recommend you look at the 10700K and save some money to get a better GPU - 11700K brings nothing in terms of CPU performance

I've read your statements about support and while I agree that AMD dropping Fiji support is ridiculous, you seem to be forgetting about what Nvidia does too.

How quickly they stop optimizing for older generations, Kepler was destroyed by lack of optimizations compared to AMD cards of the same age for years, and I didn't see you complain. Maxwell is dead right now as well, so what if you get a driver update if no game optimizations are added and no features are added? Most people seem to not update Nvidia's drivers for such cards because it seems pointless anyway. Pascal stopped getting any meaningful game optimizations long time ago too, which is easily seen when you see a 2070 Super surpass a 1080Ti, which did not happen when it launched. But in any newer game, there's a large gap between them.

I'm not defending AMD here, I'm pointing out that the alternative isn't somehow magically better as you make it out to be. It's arguably been worse with support in the past years.

Even if I were still using my 290X's, I still have them (friend is now using one of mine), I couldn't care less that they are "unsupported". They still work, will keep working, and will do so for years.

At work in a business context I'm strict about things being supported, at home for gaming if it works then I really don't care. So unless my 290X's actually stop working in Windows 7/10 for current and future games for no good reason (i.e. DirectX feature support they do not have) there is no impact for me.

The only thing that would stop me from using my 290X's is a clear and present, actively exploited, no mitigation possible security issue that AMD isn't going to fix. That's it.

P.S. My 8800 GTS still works and it's WAY unsupported.

Yeah, exactly. Lower-end hardware will benefit much more from FSR. My RX 560X laptop would love that.

This also makes me question the utility of Nvidia's Tensor Cores in RTX GPUs.

No games actually support it yet, from what I've read all of the games "listed" as supported should receive game updates today or tomorrow to add the feature.

The support list itself is terrible though at this moment.

I meant that if you run 1080p native and use the FSR Performance setting, your what AMD calls "input resolution" is so low that it completely breaks visuals at some point, so for best results I would probably recommend not going below "Quality" setting at 1080p.

For instance, you can see in Hardware Unboxed review video (here) how using FSR Performance mode at 1080p in Godfall reduced the quality significantly beyond what happens at 4K

This may be exactly why DLSS is restricted not to run at all with certain GPU + resolution configurations

Well, so was DLSS. All we got was that Final Fantasy tech demo and Battlefield V and that was about it. It looked pretty bad. Metro Exodus came later and was still pretty bad although not as bad. And that was pretty much it for next 6 months after which we got 4 more games that support DLSS. With some it was a requirement to even be able to use RTX. Not because of performance but because it was tied to DLSS explicitely.

Wall of text added to OP including my thoughts on the review samples. Specific to this comment, what we currently have is a native vs FSR comparison. What we could use next is a FSR vs DLSS comparison. Does DLSS offer better visuals and/or more performance vs FSR for those with RTX GPUs.

Looking at this review, I gotta say I'm impressed - probably because I didn't expect much, nice! Especially for owners of older cards like the RX 580 during the shortage. Can't say this feature is going to be very useful for someone with an RX 6900 XT or even a 6800 XT since those are high performing cards anyway, unless there was also RT implemented in the game.

@porinaYour thoughts? Can you add the review link to the original post for more information to the readers?
