Speed fan has a feature that sets all fans to 100% if any temperature goes over the "alarm temp".  You need to make sure all of your sensors' alarm temps are set above normal operating temperatures.

The new razer blade has a 3200x1800 display.
I'm in the same market and find myself waiting for the broadwell MacBooks as I am not in urgent need of a laptop. Battery life and a slim, well built device is key IMO.

For video editing/rendering, you might want a workstation GPU. You're going to want a high resolution screen above 15". You're going to want more than 8GB RAM too. Here's what I got.

you're right, it isn't technically a previous gen card and I'm aware that memory is important.  I think the 780 makes up for it with it's speed though.  Also, isn't it possible that there will be a 6gb version of the 780 released at some point?  That would be the ticket.

For SLI you can only SLI the same model of the particular card.
Example:
680 + 680 = Yes
680 + Titan = No*
680 + 670 = No*
680 + 770 (Unknown but 95% Won't work) = No*
* = You can have plugged in and running, but can only use for dedicated PhysX, if i remember correctly people use to go GT 9800 (Main) or something like this, with GT 9600 as a dedicated PhysX card.

This build has been operational for about a year and a half.  A month ago I got fed up with my HAF 922's constant vibrations and lack of cable management.  The build was just a mess.  I picked up a Fractal R4 and a few fans and set to work... or play rather.
 
 
 
 

 
 

 
 

 
 
 
It's super quiet, the dust seems to be keeping out, and temps are a couple degrees lower.  A quality case makes a huge difference.  It just makes your whole computing experience a little better.  Fractal has hit a home run with this one.
 
 
And yes, that is an IDE ribbon.

GPU  It's hard to reccomend something if I don't know what you're doing, but if you're a gamer, the 6850 is getting a little old.  If you have $280 go for a 7870 LE.  You probably wont need a PSU upgrade and the card is a beast overclocker.

I strongly suggest using the bios to overclock rather then using AMD Overdrive because it can be quite buggy and good luck :)
