GTX 780 or HD7970 6GB

Go to solution Solved by 7850OC,

You would only need more then 1 card if you play @ full resolution on higher then med/high graphic settings. 1 card is more then enough. Don't believe me? Below is a 3x 2560x1440 config using 1x 7970 6GB card. Does it at playable FPS. Yes to play above 60 FPS you would need 2 but 1 will get the job done. Here are some other videos showing current games being played at the resolution mentioned above.

yes  this is my point, this card (at least) may be the only one that can do it (i think), great post  :D

Keep in mind I will be running 2560x1440 x3.

GTX 780 4GB ideally, the 780 outperforms the 7970, clearly. Its just running that many screens would be a push at those resolutions, thought about sli or crossfire?

The VRAM really won't matter too much unless you're using more then one card. You'll find at that resolution you'll have to turn all the memory eating settings down which makes that much VRAM worthless. With a single card you may see the VRAM go above 2GB but its rare. Running two cards you'll see much higher VRAM usage just because you have more horsepower to crank settings up you couldn't use before.

Every video I watch on youtube, or blog I read on google, states that up to a certian point VRAM does not matter if the memory clock speed cant push the pixels fast enough. Seeing as the 7970 6GB is still current gen with a high memory clock, I think it will utilize the VRAM very easily especially at 3x 2560x1440. Agree? Disagree?

The card would still be limited by the power of the card. VRAM doesn't matter if you don't have playable frame rates.

I think you should wait for the 8000 series from AMD. They may be announcing it at Computex.

If you are running 3 x 1440p vram is going to become an issue assuming you are capable of rendering a decent frame rate to begin with (you will need a xfire/sli config). Personally i would wait to see if a 5gb 780 comes out soon. Then you could always sli later if the extra performance is needed.

as far as i know, you can use 1440p (DP) 1440p (DP) 1440p (DVI)

and the 6GB of the 7970 will help you "alot", but i never see a 3x1440p built yet

(it be awesome by the way)

neither card can do 1440x3

You'd need 3-4 cards to pull it off.

i think the same

but, this "SAPPHIRE HD 7970 GHz Edition 6GB GDDR5 TOXIC" can do "4 displays"

that is just what we need for the dual DVI and the two DP

so, i really not that sure that it can't be done

Get a 780.  Don't waste your time on a previous gen GPU just because it has more memory.

Don't waste money on more memory??? Memory is what allows you to crank the graphics up and textures when resolutions are above 1080. The sad thing is most people only game at 1080 which is fine until they start making comments about how memory don't help which is true when it comes to 1080, but if you watch the videos above I posted it proves 6GB is a huge help above 1080. Also Previous gen??? AMD has not released new gen cards so its actually still in current gen sir.

u do realize that he is giong to run 3 1440p monitors right? Vram is definitly essential above 2 gb, i just dont know if gb is needed or the 4gb on the 780 is fine.

the 780 will out perform the 7970, your monitor set up is pretty insane so sadly u may not have a good solution atm.

I don't know, the fps in those videos looked pretty low. I just think it's insane to want to play on 3 2560x1440 monitors with a single card. I don't care if it's a Titan or 7970, it's just not enough graphical horsepower to drive a crazy resolution like that.

6GB is not a huge help over 1080.

For this crazy res it would be useful (and 2GB is definitely not enough), but the 7970 is too weak on it's own imo.

TBH you seem set on buying the 7970 so you may as well just do it.

Also, I cba to check but I bet those games are running at pants settings.
