Hahah, not sure the 2080 is any faster than a 1080ti, but I guess RTX is nice to have...

Update (hopefully the last): It seems like EVGA did not have any similar 1080ti cards on hand to send as a replacement so I got a 2080 xc ultra as a replacement. All is well in game and it works just like it should.

They did not clarify what exactlly was the issue with my original card and I find it strange how it worked in the pc of the guy I bought it from but just not on mine. Seems like a hardware related problem since I tested it in multiple pc's with similar results. For anyone that has a similar issue of the 1080ti crashing in games and generally being unstable until you lower the power limit and the clocks, it likely is a hardware issue with the vrm's and should be sent in for an RMA. Anyone getting those cards at this point will be buying them used as I did, so sticking with brands like EVGA that have robust RMA policies would be your best bet.

Just installed a water block onto the 2080 and am leak testing it now. With a mild OC it boosts to just shy of 2100mhz and settls in at 2045mhz once the loop is up to operating temps.

Update 2: Talked with EVGA support and they defaulted to the response of "send it in for an RMA". I know their RMA cards are refurb units so hopefully the one I get from them does not have the same issue...

I will update when I get the card back just in case someone else has this issue.

It means that the board does not natively support 3200Mhz memory, and that you will have to overclock your memory in order to reach that frequency.

Your chances of having a stable system out of the box would increase by getting memory found on the DRAM QVL: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-CROSSHAIR-VI-HERO/HelpDesk_QVL/

All ssd's have limited write cycles they can endure. they have gotten to a point now where in a consumer workload they will last a very long time, but that will still eventually fail.

My custom cpu+gpu loop makes upgrading the gpu a non trivial task, and since I get most of my computer components including this monitor im looking at used, it'll take a while for those new technologies to trickle down to a price that id be willing to pay. part of my mentality is also the gsync would prolong the time i can use my current gpu for since sub 60 fps will be a bit smoother.

Sounds like thermal shutdown to be honest. In other words, the card is shutting itself down to prevent death from heat. This would be fixed by reapplying thermal paste on the card, make sure you put it back with good enough pressure.

The pinout of the CX750M (Type 3) and RM550x (Type 4) are the same. The difference is on the 24 pin (4 extra v.sense wires on the RMx) which is irrelevant as the 24-pin on the CXM is hardwired. Other than that, the Type 4 cables has some capacitor on the PEG and EPS12V connector to help with ripple suppression.

VRAM quantity is the same regardless of the memory arcetecture. If a game needs 4gb of vram it will need 4gb reagrdless of if the gpu has hbm or gddr5.
From my experience of using a 3gb card at 1440p vram isnt a huge hinderance on performance as long as you dont crank up the texture/ aa settings. While I would take the higher performance of the fury x, the 480 might be better if you plan on running higher resolutions or going crossfire.

Yeah, once I did the math, if I got $200 for my card, Id be able to pitch in another $250 to afford a 980ti or 1070. Nvidia cards dont seem to age well, so getting the newer card when given the option, even if performance is compareble to an older one, seems like a better option.

If I'm able to get away with the 3gb on my card at 1440p, I dont think the 3gb on the 1060 would be a noticeable hindrance to performance at 1080p, but I would still lean towards the rx 480 for price

Lord_Karango17 got a reaction from RS Gaming in EVGA GTX 960 Overclocking
Max oc frequency depends on the chip in your card, and varies from card to card. Its called the "silicone lottery" and you can never tell what max clocks the card can reach before trying to OC it.
Since nvidia locks down the voltage control a lot, there is pretty much nothing you can do that would harm the card without flashing a custom bios. Just keep an eye on temps, and oc away...

GPUs are stock overlocked usually, you might just have gotten a bad chip or your GPU might start dying soon and ROTTR as being very picky in terms of OC's starts artifacting first.

Lord_Karango17 reacted to Oshino Shinobu in G-sync or freesync
Considering he mainly plays Dota 2, a 460 or 1060 are both going to get well above 144FPS. That, in turn, kind of makes GSync and Freesync pointless, as they're not going to be doing anything above the monitor's refresh rate anyway, it would just be normal VSync. Unless he caps the FPS below the monitor's refresh rate, adaptive refresh rate technology won't do anything.

@OP I'd advise considering how many more demanding games you play. For Dota 2, GSync and Freesync don't offer a huge benefit, as they'll deactivate unless you cap your FPS. If you have more games that you play that are more demanding, then it may still be worth going for an adaptive refresh rate monitor. If you're shorter on money, I'd advise going for FreeSync as it's typically better value and performs mostly the same as GSync.

You could but it's ultimately going to be worthless. Not many games use PhysX and your GTX 1060 should independently handle it fine by itself.

Lord_Karango17 reacted to Imakuni in On my GTX 780 a pink light showed up. Also, should I upgrade from 2way 780 SLI to a GTX 1060?
SLI 780 should be considerably better most of the time. THe 970 isn't that much better than a single 780, and the 1060 isn't all that much better than the 970 as well. So you'd mostly get rid of SLI problems rather than getting a proper "upgrade".
