That system would be perfectly fine with a 650 Watt PSU.

That's actually great. If Nvidia had made this clear (You know they could have made it postive. Look guys it has 3.5GB of super fast Vram and 0.5 GB of reserve Vram that isn't quite as fast but it's still more Vram.)  and had offered the 970 for 80%  of it's current price at launch it would have sold even better.

So in this topic I am going to give you guys some tips on what to do when you build your first PC. This will be mostly based of the mistakes I made when bulding my first PC in 2013. 
 
 
1. It's not that hard.
 
Be confidend. Building a PC is not that hard. Just read the manual if you're uncertain about some things. Don't give up. You can do it. The scariest thing for new builders is usually cabels. 10 cabels migth seem like a lot but if you did your research you will do just fine. Always remeber if it doesn't go in easily then it's not supposed to go there.
 
2. You ain't no Linus.
In contrast to what I just said building a PC is not that easy. Don't expect to be done in 20 minutes just because experienced builders can pull it off within 20- 25 minutes. You may have watched a ton of videos on the topic but that doesn't make you an experienced builder. Take your time. Make sure you have atleast 2-3 hours to build the rig. 
 
 3. It's all about preparation.
Preparation is the most important part of any build. Be sure to build in a well lit room because trying to screw in a screw when you can't see shit if pretty damn hard. Also be sure to have a releatively big work space. Also make sure that the work space is clean and that their are no liquids (such as a drink) around that could damage the parts. Be sure to have some type of containers handy to put in the screws. Losing a screw is a nightmare.
 
4.Don't overspend on your first build.
 
You don't need to get yourself a two way 980 5960x build for your first build. You should stick to a 1000$ budget (or something around those lines) most people will be just fine with one of those builds. 
 
5.Don't buy expensive parts and expect them to work for ever.
I did it and I have seen it time and time again. People but parts that are compatible with all kinds of systems (like PSUs) to be futureproof. I mean I ended up with an i3 (i think) and no GPU and a 750 Watt 80+ Gold PSU. And just a couple days ago I saw a build with an r7 250 and an i3 using a 850 Watt Hxi 80+ Platinum PSU. Also cases. You don't need an expensive case.  A 30$ case will be fine. Heck no case will be fine. It's actually easier to build without a case. 
 
6.Don't build a PC to upgrade it once you get some more money.
 
I did it. I planned everything. I would by a GPU by Christmas and I'd get myself a better CPU after I got my birthday money. Don't do that. Get a decent system and don't plan on mowing your neigbor's lawn 24 hours a day. (24*5$= 120$ 120*30= 3600 * 6= 21600$. And in 6 months you will buy yourself a 20 grand rig. ) Also don't build a system without a GPU and plan on getting one later. Just buy a decent system now. Buying a new system in 2-3 years can be a lot cheaper than trying to upgrade an old one. 
 
7. Listen to others.
 
You're not a genius. Just because you can build a computer. I mean come on we all thought that we were geniuses after building/planning our first computer. More experienced builders will know more than you do. Listen to them. Don't just build something because you have a plan why this setup makes sense when it actually is a really dumb idea. (See 5 and 6) 
 
 
So yeah. If you listen to this ''guide'' you will be good to go
