The latest fiasco in PC gaming - Just Cause 3 port is terrible

Master Disaster

Despite some of best looking pre release streams of any game I've ever seen now its out the performance of JC3 on PC is really really bad.

It suffers from all the widely reported issues the PS4 version suffers from including FPS tanking when theres a lot going on and long load times however it also suffers from a fairly decent chunk of PC specific issues to.

For example if you want to change the resolution then you must use a text editor and manually edit the config file as adjusting it ingame cause an instant crash (for a lot of users, not everyone).

Playing the game above 1080p causes sub menu items to act wierd and display in the top right corner of the screen instead of next to the menu item they relate to.

ALT & TAB is a no no to, it either 1) Instantly crashes your game or 2) Switches to borderless windowed mode and will not go back to fullscreen without quitting the game and relaunching it.

So far I've got over an hour playtime and I am yet to actually launch the game. I am just about to press Start after I finished posting this article.

It has been suggested that Avalanche Studios actually send entire PCs out to reviwers with ultra specific hardware inside them in order for reviweres to show gameplay that was running as decently as possible, now obviously I cannot say if this is true or not but if it does turn out to be true then thats a really bad dick move from them and shows catagorically that they knew full well how bad this game was and actively lied to consumers in order to boost sales.

I can't provide any sources as this is compiled entirely from my own experiences and digging through pages upon pages of negative reviews and posts over on SPUD.

TO MODS - In order to try and back this up with some actual evidence I will update this post with any reviews I can as soon as they become available, both positive (yeah right) and negative to give some balance.

That is Nvidia hardware, AMD on the other hand...

Oh wow.... constant 60fps with 980 Ti cards in SLI.... That actually sucks. A game using 2 980 Ti cards should be getting 120fps.

Why even have 120-144hrtz monitors or 4k then? Games do not seem to be optimized these days.

So you need $1200+ in just GPU's to run a $60 game? Nice....

Strange was watching TBs video this morning and it was running great

Hope it runs ok for me

SNIP

TB normally tests out the port of games, so its weird that he didnt this time, perhaps he just didnt feel the need to, or was not feeling up to it health wise

Maybe he will further do a port report now these reports are out

TB's version ran fine on 1 of his cards, since he mentioned that there was no SLI support at the time of recording. Don't think he mentioned what fps he got though.

TotalBicuit gave it a good port and people saying that 2 980ti only getting 60fps. I don't think there is sli or crossfire capability at this point and the fps might be locked to screen speed. From the video I couldn't see any jumps in fps, but it did have some popping and glitches with transparency:

OK, so its a wierd beast this one.

Its actually a decently running game, its just surrounded by an infrastructure of bugs. That is to say gameplay is great and for the most part smooth but as soon as you open the menu things begin to fall apart.

weird that TB claimed it was a good pc port.. maybe on the NVIDIA side, but the AMD side is struggling a bit.. i don't have the best rig in the world, but i can't hold a constant 60fps.. plus the audio is messed up for me..

I watched some PC Videos and i have to say, the Graphics are realy bad. Fallout4 looks 10times better, dont understand why people cry about it.

i concur. the graphics look gorgeous to me. to each their own i guess

Yea, pretty disappointing from a Just Cause title. But found out later that a different branch was working on the game. This mainly affects mid range non maxwell cards. Though AMD did have an issue of their own before the fix came out. Peeps mostly have a more comfortable fps with very high end GPUs. Specifically, the 980 Ti.

It is also noted that setting shadows from High to Highest has a really drastic effect on the fps.

Here's a performance thread on NeoGaf http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1148535

And some performance figures.

Watch a friend play FO4 maxed with his new GPU yesterday, it is truly one of the worst looking AAA games in recent time I can think of. Not to mention it broke 3 times in less than an hour.

I cannot imagine JC3 would look anywhere near that bad.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

it looked no where near that good 90% of the time. That doesn't even look good, just has a lot of blur/depth of field.

I'm going off of memory here, but I thought he spoke at length about the PC port. If he glossed over performance a bit it was likely because it ran fine for him on a single 980 Ti, which was evident from the video. He doesn't generally do a Port Report video unless it's for a game where serious problems are known or suspected, and this is the first I've heard about this with regards to JC3.

yeah he seemed to think it ran great, he did mention that you need a monster PC to play at like full details, but he said he thinks a 970 up should max at 1080p and will run 1440p

so he kinda mentioned it, but yeah this is the first I have heard about major issues, perhaps an AMD driver thing?

Maybe it just needs some driver updates
