What does RAID mean in storage?

Hey there z123killer,

Raid is when you gather some friends or co-players and you go on a mission in a game to complete a set of tasks, eliminate certain enemies and it usually end with a boss fight where you get rewards and complete achievements and.. oh wait.. storage...

As my fellow captain pointed out, RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent/Inexpensive Disks. It basically makes possible for two or more drives to work as one, providing some level of redundancy, speed increase or a combination of both. :) The video shows a good example of the major types of RAID. I can add that RAID5 and RAID6 are also popular ones, providing with with one or two drive-failure tolerance respectively and a good speed increase.

It is highly recommended that you use NAS/RAID-class drives when configuring RAID arrays because these drives have additional features such as TLER that enable the drives to work safer and smoother and reduce the chances of data corruption and drive dropouts. WD Red is a good example of such drives: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=VWOhqq

Feel free to ask if you need more information or if you have other questions :)
