Audio noob question

So I've wondered this for awhile but never bothered to ask. What sort of headphones do professional movie editors use? Do they use speakers perhaps? If headphones, closed or open-back?

Just wondering. Sorry if this has been posted previously.

Studio monitor speakers, often in an acoustically-treated editing room, headphones to check.

Well do you mean in field recording... if so Sony MDR 7506 or MDRV6 headphones are the standard... they are closed headphones, hope that helps.

Well i am no professional but i would guess very high end cans, though they may test with speakers i would think that all the editors with different parts of the movie playing out of speakers may get a little loud. However probably a mix of open and closed (i dont think it would matter), maybe even a bring your own type thing?

I run my own indie game company called Color Dragon Studios where we are currently making a 2d platformer game called Small Earth.

I see the sound foam stuff but the thing I mean is do they primarily use surround sound speakers or do they use headphones? Google Images seems to be pretty mixed.

Well this might help, I do professional audio work and we NEVER use Headphones. Only Studio Monitors and usually just with the Stereo setup (IE: the front 2 speakers) and sometimes is a client wants we will do surround we have multiple sets of speakers just to check and make sure that the mix sounds great on anything. Hopefully that helps you :)

The father of a friend of mine was actually one of the audio engineers that worked on several films and quite a few records (for music videos and such) he has a gold record and a platinum one to his name. Anyway, he used a pair of MDR-V6 headphones from Sony for just about everything, when he wasn't using speakers. Hope that answers your question. (if you're wondering who I'm talking about, it's Marc Reshovsky.)

Oh, and those mdr v6 I was talking about? Still in use by his son, more than 30 years later. How's that for durability?
