Which GTX 970 or R9 390 should I get based on these prices?

nims0c

Prices in CAD

GTX 970:

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 $415

EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB SSC ACX 2.0 $420

MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G $436

Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming $440

R9 390:

Sapphire Radeon R9 390 8GB Nitro $440

MSI R9 390 GAMING 8G $440

At the $440 price point I think I'd go with an R9 390 for extra VRAM and slightly better performance. But what about the $20-$25 cheaper GTX 970 options from EVGA?

Ignore the signature. I'm building a gaming rig separate from the one listed there. I've got an EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2.

$430 USD is $565 CAD. That's a totally different ballpark. I don't think I really need to step up to a 980 for 1080p 60 Hz anyway.

They're all pretty similar in performance. At this point I'll just choose which card I like aesthetically...

I would go 970 SC acx2.0 or 390 nitro. The performance is about the same, a bit more in favor of 390. But with much less power draw and heat and the better driver support for new games.

The 970 G1 in Canada is $450.

The MSI 390 is $430.

MSI 390. It can easily overclock to 1200 MHz, which is more than enough to beat a 970 OCed to 1450-1500MHz.

It seems the r9 390 would be a better option. That 8gb of vram is much more attractive than 3.5gb.

R9 390 Nitro

390 Nitro

Sapphire R9 390. Best 390 on the market.

Overwhelming support for Sapphire R9 390 Nitro. I was already leaning in that direction to be honest.  ;)

I would go for the R9 390, better performance and a bit more future-proof.

Any preference between the Sapphire and MSI 390?

+1 and id look at watt/powerconsumption aswell ( here in europe electricity is rather expensive )

I crunched some numbers and even with 30 hours of gaming per week for 52 weeks (much more than I have time for, really) it would be like $1/month more with the 390.

nothing is futureproof if you are meeting your limits now. Just remember that.

what does 60fps 4K one day won't do it a year later.

I agree. I didn't say anything about being futureproof though. I'll be gaming at 1080p 60fps. One fine day I'll have enough disposable income to afford a flagship card equivalent to the 980Ti or some such.

Where did you get these prices? I used pcpartpicker and they are both $440.

I agree. Are you partial to one or the other?

in my country if u were using 500watt for 10hrs ud already be paying 2$ ( for 10hrs... ) ( it depends per country really, expensive electricity = lower power best by far .. US and countries where the electricity costs nothing sure pop in 1000watt if u have to :P but having 1000watt at a constant load would result in getting energy bills here 300$ a month or so xD

In Ontario, Canada 500W for 10 hours would be $0.40 (if you're using it during off-peak hours). My $1/month calculation was a difference between 970 and 390 assuming 100W greater consumption by the 390 while gaming.

10hr in us is like 1-2hr here xD under same load
