Which GTX 970 or R9 390 should I get based on these prices?

nims0c

If you get the MSI 970 or G1 gaming it can easily overclock from 1550-1600 mhz which can beat an OCed 390.

Are you sure about that? From what I hear, even if you overclock a good 970 (like the G1), a good overclocked 390 (like the Sapphire or MSI) will still beat the 970 even at 1080p.

in my country if u were using 500watt for 10hrs ud already be paying 2$ ( for 10hrs... ) ( it depends per country really, expensive electricity = lower power best by far .. US and countries where the electricity costs nothing sure pop in 1000watt if u have to :P but having 1000watt at a constant load would result in getting energy bills here 300$ a month or so xD

You think a 390 pulls 500w?

Wtf? Lol

And that causes increased voltage to the gpu, and your supposed power savings go out the door.

From the benchmarks I've seen the 970 beats out the 390 OCed well at 1080p

You don't always need to increase from stock voltage to get that high. I don't have to.

I don't understand. I never claimed to have benchmarks. I'm not on one side or the other of the argument. I'm the OP seeking help regarding this matter. I'd greatly appreciate your posting of useful information.

I'd advise you to not pay heed to the bechmarks provided below. I'll show you how much the is 970 overclocked

MYUDTCZ.jpg

As you can see a 1600+mhz 970 is pretty much a golden card. And the 390 only has a 1116mhz overclock which is a poop overclock. The 1600+mhz 970 is bound to surge pass the 390 at that kind of clock speeds...

Sapphires r9 390 Nitro is a solid card that I'm considering as a good upgrade from my current HD 6970, most of the reviews hold it in good stead and benchmarks make it out to be consistently trading blows if not beating the 970 :)

This guy again! Great. I advise you not to listen to him as he just tries to throw benchmarks out for no reason...It is barely past 1600mhz so I doubt that extra 9 mhz will do much. Considering it beats it by this much with an overclocking like this if you lower it to 1580 and raised the 390s oc the 970 would probably still pull ahead.

And this comparison is better than JayzTwoCents...that's for sure since your more likely to get a better 970 overclock than a 390. Yet Pohernori goes for his benchmark instead...

I don't either on my r9 280x. Got it up to 1160 on the core stable. So what's your point? Both cards can do it. But you are arguing that the 970 is better when over clocked. The r9s can be overclocked too.

Both cards run neck in neck. Your power cost difference is negligible on a monthly basis.

Unless OP buys a golden chip or the baddest Grenada Pro chip in history, respectively, a GTX 970 won't OC more than 1450-1500 MHz nor would an R9 390 OC less than 1200 MHz, at those clock speeds, the 390 still beats the 970 comfortably at 1080p, with the difference increasing as the resolution goes up.

What is your point? I don't remember saying anything on this thread about power cost...unless I did I don't remember! I also didn't say you couldn't overclock a 390 so...Your points don't make much sense in this context. I know they run neck and neck. I'm just saying with the extra overclocking head room Nvidia cards give and especially the 970 you can probably get it to beat the 390.

We have discuss this already. I have never recommended JayZ video and I appreciate anyone who doesn't take his words as gospel.

Going around and spreading shit like this is hypocrisy and I've already told you that.

How is this comparison even better than JayZ video? Just because it favours the 970 more? Smh...

Have you taken a look at MSI Gaming 970s or G1 970s? They usually at the very least overclock to 1500mhz and most likely get somewhere between 1550-1600 mhz...at those speeds the Nvidia card will beat a 390. And it isn't rare to see those overclocks at all. The only 970 cards I see that low is EVGA SSC's and cheap vendors which is why I warn against those.

As for 390 ocs I see a lot of less than 1200mhz ocs on overclock.net
