24/7 GPU Usage - F@H

TheCaptain53

So after someone suggested running F@H for 3 days (@iamdarkyoshi) to fix some coil whine, I thought I would get it. However, I'm slightly concerned about running my GPU pinned at 92-95% 24/7.

I decided to underclock the core -150MHz so it, at the very least, produces less heat. Do I have anything to worry about?

If the temps are not in 90C range it really doesn't matter.

Don't underclock it unless you get more ppd. You can play with the power target and see if it undervolts a little bit. Other than that you need a good air flow and that's it.

I punished my GTX 970 for weeks before i stopped because of financial reasons. :P

who cares...

How about if you let it stay at 94 degrees 24/7?

for how long, a week? a month? a year? probably will degrade in a while. if you are talking about 290x though those cards run at 95c normally so they could be designed to last better at those temps.

Dunno. One of my 290s is sitting at 94 while the other one is at 73 degrees while folding. I got the other 290 about a week ago, and it's been like that since then, except the few times when I went on to play some GTA5. I was planning on leaving it folding like that permanently though.

Also, isn't a 290 just a slightly nerfed version of the 290x?

Now, that I think about it I could move the second card up to the PCIE x4 slot so as to allow it to get more air. I'll see what framerates I get in GTA 5 with that.

You shouldn't see any performance difference going to PCIe x4 from x16.

I took my side panel off, set the GPU fans to full, then blew one of those contractor fans into the case. My amd card stayed at 45 degrees full load. You don't want to cook the capacitors in the vrm section of the card.

I've got my GPU underclocked and it's running at about 70C. I'd say that was an acceptable temperature.

Would it be alright leaving it at this temperature for a couple of days?

Don't underclock it mate, just undervolt it. But yes, it will be fine.

Getting more points in Firestrike would have just been a coincidence since your score get vary a little even with the same setup. Unless your card over throttling itself before you moved.

I'm not sure if Folding is the same way (probably not) but I know with litecoin mining it tended to stress the cards extremely heavy (like heavier than furmark heavy) and as a result the cards really got cooking after a few hours.

This also won't do shit about coil whine.

Fair enough.

I'll probably contact the store I got it from or EVGA to seek a replacement. Apparently EVGA were encouraging customers to speak to them directly.

If not, then I can live with what sounds like the countryside at night with a fuck load of crickets. I can just upgrade when Pascal comes out. :)

Yeah, it's within the margin of error. It's a shame though, becuase some mysterious force has now decided that my other card is only allowed to run at 300mhz while inside the x4 slot...  <_<

While on load? @Litargirio

Does the clock speed change when you manually adjust it?

Yes, while under load. And I can't even adjust it past 390 mhz now...

Well.... that is something I haven't seen before. Have you tried using something else like Trixxx, or before that see what CCC will let you do.

Just checked up on the specsheet of your mobo

1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4)

* The PCIEX4 slot shares bandwidth with all PCI Express x1 slots. All PCI Express x1 slots will become unavailable when a PCIe x4 expansion card is installed.

* When installing a x8 or above card in the PCIEX4 slot, make sure to set PCIE Slot Configuration (PCH) in BIOS Setup to x4. (Refer to Chapter 2, "BIOS Setup," "Peripherals," for more information.)

Have you got any PCIe x1 cards installed? If not check out that BIOS option.

@Litargirio Catalyst Control Centre, rightclick on your desktop and it should be the top option, check out the AMD Overdrive section. Does it let you push your card any higher than 390Mhz?
