Newegg POSSIBLY shipping open-box items as new

Amazon does the same. Got a broken printer from them one time.

I think this happens every now and then,  It only takes one untrained new employee to misplace a box or be under too much pressure to deliver and the wrong unit gets shipped.  I've even brought product from a retail shop that was returned as faulty, but it ended up back on the shelf. (it was a modem and still had the previous customers details in it :o ).

Anyway, it's Carry Holzman, even if they sent him a new one in perfect condition he was probably looking to make a video shitting on stuff solely to drum up views anyway.

He quite possibly is a twat (I don't know him enough to know what he is like in person), however even if he is a twat he is a knowledgeable one.

Remember it's only arrogance if you can't back it up.   Seems one of his pet phrases is "that's with 25 years building experience" so am I more likely to listen to him or some eighteen year old?

If he is just after views you will have no problem posting a video of him shitting on stuff though it is all in perfect condition (or rather a link to same).

He did a review of a $300 HP desktop.  He Spent 45 minutes berating (not just derisory but condescending as well, which is not professional) HP for silly things like cable management and using the "wrong" type of screws. He has zero time to consider the target consumer, their needs or position.  Now I don't care how much experience he has, if he doesn't understand the difference between a $300 pre-built web surfing computer for non technically minded poor people and an enthusiast grade custom built unit then he is just a dick who gets of making himself look more important than others.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/194602-carey-holzman-says-some-stuff-about-ltt/

He is also the one that accused Linus of being paid for comments by various companies.  I think he is just a sore loser, he had a show, a chance to make it big but it didn't quite turn out the way he wanted.

EDIT: to be honest, even the community here displays a better well rounded understanding of product purpose and legitimacy.

Fair one.  He does seem to have blinkers on that everyone who uses a computer would be concerned about its innards and as you say doesn't seem to differentiate between someone who only wants a system to play YT videos and do a bit of surfing now and again (wife is a classic for that but she has an iPad for that) and a 'dyed in the wool' enthusiast.  Had never heard of this 'Linus is on the take' does sound like sour grapes maybe when I am 'better dressed' and if I can be bothered I will read further into that.

I still think he says a lot of good things (even if I am not a mega-fan of how he says it).

Though that unplugged drive.

Video removed?

Case of he realised he had over stepped the mark and removed it himself?

Evidence in an on-going case so removed in the mean time?

or... ?

The unplugged drive,  well it might be true it might not,  But in reality how many pc's do they ship? (millions of desktops) and the law of averages says it has to happen at least once, hardly the end of the earth considering as enthusiasts we've all had at least one DOA product or cord missing.

Yeah, I don't know why it would have been removed, suffice to say there is no reason to remove a monetized video from youtube unless it is embarrassing or part of some larger issue.

But surely we have already decided that is a system for the clueless .

It would be a non event for you or I to check and plug back in a drive not so much for the people that, we have decided, are the target market.

Personal:-

Talking of missing cords(ish) I bought an SSD for the previous system I thought I would save money by buying bare bones, then I realised as I was just buying the drive I would need a SATA cable (still using the old HDD:as a storage drive).  Cycled to the local(ish) PC shop (Seven miles) and due to where I wanted the SSD to be decided I would need a right-angled one .  So bought same from shop cycled home again then realised it was right-angled at both ends (never actually seen that before) and due to the layout of the SATA ports if I tried to plug in the right-angled SATA it would block an other port.  So seven miles there then seven miles back with a SATA that was actually straight on both ends (hadn't needed it to be right-angled in the first place. Then used that.

The point being that the cycling aside because I knew what was going wrong and wasn't afraid to 'get my hands dirty' this was pretty easy I dread to think how much of a kerffufle it would be to someone who wasn't as au fait with a computer's innards .

I've head of Amazon doing that. A bunch of people had trouble playing Dragon Age 2 because the licence key for their new copy had already been linked to an EA account "prior to purchase".

Because DRM never hurts legitimate consumers amirite

It's not EA's fault that Amazon resold it as new and the DRM not being present wouldn't absolve Amazon of this, but it's an example of how this sort of DRM has nothing to do with preventing piracy and everything to do with making returned and used products useless.

So? Enough people have that it's an issue. There's a few games and films that I've bought that I've had to pirate anyway because DRM rendered my copy non-functional.

I don't give a shit about EA, I'm talking about unnecessary DRM, in particular when it exacerbates shitty retailers doing what was outlined in the OP o.0

Yeah, I was a bit surprised when I ordered my Thunderbolt EXII card from Newegg. Was under the impression it was brand new, but the packaging was all off and the card was bare inside. Package was also not sealed.

Not a huge deal but made me wonder

Sure, I agree, but my point is that an unplugged Sata cable is a simple 1 in a million fault that nearly all brands suffer. Carry making it sound like you are more likely to get a dud product from HP than if you build it yourself is monstrously erroneous.   That is why I said we have all bought DOA parts before.  I am sure there are plenty of times when people have bought HP, Acer, Apple, Dell etc only to have the HDD die or the cable/charger fall apart.  I know I have, it happens, but it's not restricted to HP.

It was right to point it out, but not right to make it sound like only HP make mistakes, and certainly not a reason to tell people not to buy one given it was a simple manufacturing error and not an actual faulty component.

I agree, but even before DRM this was starting to be a problem, I remember buying a PS (original ps) game from a large retailer, When I got home the discs weren't in the case.

I went back but they have a no swap, no returns policy on all digital content (against the law and I knew it).  After several hours of arguing at the counter the manager finally agreed to do a stocktake and discovered they had the discs in stock.  Shit like this happens when stores (online or bricks and mortar) employ a dingus who re wraps the covers before marking them as counted during stocking.

I also knew someone who worked at that shop, suffice to say after I got my game cd's she told there was a lot of chatter in the staff room regarding the error and how red faced some of the staff were for fucking up and then trying to insinuate it was the customers problem ( I also believe the manager didn't take to kindly to being proven wrong because his staff were to cocky).
