Sony launches First Flight crowd-funding site - Fund Sony products and games!

I am not sure if this is a sign of more financial difficulties of Sony, or Sony reaching a new level of being cheap and greedy.

The company has announced a new crowd-funding site, where you decided which Sony products you want to see released, much like Kick-Starters. Sony will no longer do investment on the products listed on their new crowd-funded site, and asks people who wants what they see to pitch in (it doesn't say that you'll get the game once released, that might be extra). The service is called by Sony: First Flight.

Projects from Sony employees are put to the site, and Sony asks you to give them money to be funded.

The service is exclusive to Japan as we speak. No information if it will be available to other regions later on.

Looks like a universal remote but the whole thing is a touch screen.

(I honestly think it is silly, because you don't know what you press, you have no feeling of button)

I quite like it, sony have been really good at listening to customers lately

I am not sure if this is a sign of more financial difficulties of Sony, or Sony reaching a new level of being cheap and greedy.

 

 

That was my initial thought as well but if you think of it as products that didn't make it beyond the prototype phase because the market analysts didn't see it selling well then you can see this as a sort of "last chance" area for those products.

This reminds me of the issues with Shenmue III on Kickstarter… are the donors actually funding these projects, or are they just voting for something for Sony to fund themselves? If the latter, why is the crowd-funding money needed and what it is being spent on?

 

I don't think I have a philosophical problem with this, but it feels dirty and needs a bit of clarification.

A company like Sony who have a poor history of making profit.. for Sony its not a bad move, they have the power to make amazing gadgets and are often willing to listen to customers, this seems like a good way to make gadgets the customers want, while not being a risk to sony

Crowdfunding is meant to get someone without any money on their feet if they have any idea worth trying.

I like the idea of listening to customers for feedback and potentially letting through many things that would have died in ye olde Japanese corp mentality.

 

On the other hand the notion of corporations shifting responsibility for product back at the customer is ridiculous.

But they can't cover their loses because they have been losing money for years, hence selling off parts of their business like VAIO etc because it was not very sucessful

 

They are not bad at business, in fact, doing a crowd funding idea is very smart business as it reduces risk undertaking experimental projects

 

The point is that Sony have very smart engineers working for them, who might have ideas that exist outside of Sonys plans... they cannot privately kickstarter them because the designs are owned by Sony.. but this way they can get a shot at making it a real product, with the backing of customers that are guaranteed to cover the costs

I disagree with this. People get burned by kickstarter projects all the time. Sure it is "smart business" (in the short term) to use kickstarter for "experimental" projects. but this also means in the long term, if your projects don't pan out, the crowd will lose faith. If the crowd loses faith, you end up with yet another devision of sony needed to be disbanded because it is leaking money.

 

clearly, sony has a problem. they are losing lots of money, yet have great tech/engineers. maybe it is a leadership problem?
