My mom scolded me for electric bill spike due to R9 290

Eyesthetics

Just a month ago, i sold off my aging GTX 660 Ti and got myself a second hand reference PowerColor R9 290 for $215, it had killed 4 power supplies (yep you read that right) before it worked without a problem

-corsair cx600m

-new cx600m from rma

-seasonic x650

-new seasonic x650 from rma

-another new seasonic x650

And then just yesterday my mom asked me why is my room so hot and loud (R9 290 fan) she also wondered why this month's electric bill went up 40 bucks. She immediately blamed the R9 290 and scolded me for buying it... Lol

Sold my R9 290 and getting a gtx 970 next week, done with amd. Now i know why people don't buy amd for high end build

I didn't know a graphics card can cause this much issue

yep my kids Room has 2x fx 6300's and 2X R9 290's. nice to say thats a really nice toasty room at night when its 4 degrees Celsius
When we upgraded from 7850's to these with 700W PSU. our elec bill went up about 100 bucks for 3 months lol so we installed 4 more solar panels to help offset it

AMD.... When you need solar panels to offset your electricity bill.  :P haha

Having a 290 won't increase the poewr bill by 40 bucks.

in most areas no, but if power is expensive, and you leave it on 24/7, that may actually be a thing.

40 bucks?

Lets say that it costs 0.20/kWh

You burned 200kWh in a single month?

Divide that by 30*24 (=720)...

0,277kW

or 277 watt...

That seems about the TDP of that card, did you leave it on 24/7? Amazing...

I think you're exaggerating.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Especially because that'd be on top of what the nvidia card managed.

Here in Indonesia 290x and 290s are no longer a viable option for gamers due to the ever increasing electricity price and the arrival of the cheaper and better 970

I'm surprised I haven't gotten yelled at by my parents for running a 4690k, a 970, and three monitors, pretty much around the clock.

The point still stands that AMD graphics card consumes twice as much power as nvidia

You have the same cpu

The 970 is much more power efficient

Why is every one hating on amd in my experience they are better that similarly priced nvidia cards.

They are cheaper but they make up for that in electric bill and noise and heat

On top of that, when i play intensive games, the fan noise is just overboard, it can be heard from the dining room. And yet it still thermal throttles. Despite the fan running at 55%

At that rate, using a microwave, or a water heaters, would have made you go bankrupt...

going to a gpu that uses 100W more at the max wont increase a monthly bill by that much...

I'd rather buy a 970 than water cooling it and still having to put up with the power consumption. 3.5GB Vram notwithstanding.

GTX 970 is better for the most part, but it isn't cheaper. I'd take if over R9 290, for sure - but when you look at the market, in most countries the GTX 970 is significantly more expensive.

Either OP lives in a wonderland where power is stupidly expensive and left the card running on for 24/7 while he didn't use the older nVidia system at all, or her mother is overpaying for electricity, or the power bill increase does not account for the change of GPU alone. Or then he just wants to bash the manufacturer, considering he's just saying that the card "killed" those power supplies.

Twice? Nope.

You had a bad/defective card, stop blaming AMD. My TwinFrozr just barely audible @70% fan speed.
