My mom scolded me for electric bill spike due to R9 290

The card alone, running at 100% load 24/7 can use up to 19.8 dollars a month. We assume that you're not a moron though, so the card will be used for what, 5 hours a day average (which is pretty high tbh.), then we get a price of 4.125 dollars a month. That's what it actually costs to run this card.

As for the difference between your old card and this, it gets even funnier. If we assume the same gaming habits then you can consume 8.712 dollars of power maximum more than before. With general use (5 hours a fay average) you will only use 1.815 dollars worth of power more than before.

You save maybe a dollar a month by switching to a 970. You're welcome.

Calculations are done as follows: 0.11kWh * (wattage of the card in kW) * (number of hours) * (number of days in a month)

An example would be, 0,11kWh * 0.25kW * 24 * 30

Dude, this is mathematics, you can't argue with mathematics. It is physically impossible for your GPU to cost you this much money, it literally can't. And that's the GPU itself, not the (way smaller) difference between this one and your old GPU. Something else is going on, but it is not your GPU, I can assure you of that 100%. If I made a mistake in the calculations feel free to point it out to me, but if there is no mistake then you simply have to accept it.

 

You can also tell me how many hours a day you spend gaming and how many hours your PC is turned on, I can gladly give you a little run-down on the total power consumption over a month, how much it will cost you and how little you actually save by switching to a 970.

For those curious, it appears the max difference between an R9 290 and GTX 970 might be 80W on system load.

That's 2.14 hours average. Your R9 290 uses:

1.7655$ a month worth of power.

 

If you switch to a 970 you use:

1.271$ a month worth of power.

 

 

You save a grand total of 49 cents a month!

lol 40 bucks. what country has electricity that expensive that you could increase the bill by 40 bucks by switching from a 660ti to a 290? and going from a 290 to a 970 is like the difference of a low wattage light bulb. These threads are a great chuckle to read in the morning.  :)

@Eyesthetics Show your mom these numbers, calculate them in front of her if you must. She has no ground to stand on in this debate, it is 100% impossible for her claim to be true. Also, switching to a 970 (as I've proven) won't do jack if you want to decrease your total power bill. So don't switch to a 970 for that reason. If you need any more help quote me or @ me, I'm more than willing to help you if you have any more questions or if you need help with the calculations.

 

And as a general thought on this subject, for everyone who claims that power consumption matters for their gaming GPU, or that this is somehow a fatal flaw for AMD GPUs, please, for the love of Zeus, just run the numbers. You know your kWh price, you know your gaming habits, and the calculations aren't difficult. Don't be a blind fanboy and don't let marketing sway you on this, it is a very easy thing to calculate for yourself and those numbers are what matters at the end of the day (or the month).

Somethings's up with your house's wiring. The 290 is 250W tdp, and let's say the rest of your system is 200W, so 450W, and that would be worst case scenario(stress testing), most likely around 300-350W while gaming, that wouldn't burn four 650 W power supplies unless there was something really sketchy about your electrical installation. The power bill difference could be real, but not because of the video card. Also the loud 290/290X are reference models, and nobody recommends those.

In my house we pay a lot for power, but it's because the house wiring sucks and some power must be "leaking" somewhere

Stop suffocating your power supply with your carpet... your GPU is not killing repeat power supplues.

Also, I just want to point out that the 290 uses less power at idle than the 660Ti and only around ~75 more W at load according to Anandtech's methodology. That won't account for a $40 increase in the power bill...

That math does not make there is no way a 290 would cost that much more to have... Also the 300 series focus will be less power usage so.

The TDP of a 290 is about 35 watts more than a gtx 780, which is almost a negligible difference. Yeah if you use a reference 290 its going to run a lot hotter and louder, which is why nobody uses a reference 290, but that wont affect power consumption.

 

If you calculate how much more power your system draws using a 290 versus that 780 and calculate that in kilowatt hours and the amount of time you game on it, you simply aren't going to find anywhere near the difference stated in this post under almost any scenario, much less with the usage claims the OP states.

 

In other words he's completely bullshitting, as the claims to have killed 4 power supplies due to his 290 should have revealed.

yep my kids Room has 2x fx 6300's and 2X R9 290's. nice to say thats a really nice toasty room at night when its 4 degrees Celsius 

When we upgraded from 7850's to these with 700W PSU. our elec bill went up about 100 bucks for 3 months lol so we installed 4 more solar panels to help offset it 

AMD.... When you need solar panels to offset your electricity bill.  :P haha

Good job, but Id suggest you run Nvidia cards on Solar panels. You put 2 970s and on Solar power, you get twice the performance.

I am even thinking to stick Solar panels on my pc...but that might not work...

  

Just a month ago, i sold off my aging GTX 660 Ti and got myself a second hand reference PowerColor R9 290 for $215, it had killed 4 power supplies (yep you read that right) before it worked without a problem

Good job! And let me tell you, the 390X will be the only *new* card from AMD this year, consuming rumored 300W. So, 970 will be great for now, but consider Pascal for your next upgrade, in case you are looking for Oculus. 16nm should deliver good performance for less power consumption. Have in mind however, when you OC, the power consumption will go up exponentially!

If he used a PSU that was below 750W like 550W then I can see why they died! xD

A system with a 290x in uber mode will use about 400w, a system with a 290 will use less... It's no problem for a half decent 550w PSU.
