My favourite two uses for the pi have been using it as a Wake On Lan Server and for Streaming games to TV using Nvidia Streaming.. (ok i have set it up but haven't tried it.. but its such a cool idea it immediately made my second place spot) links below for reference.

(this doesn't eed the pi2. pi1 is more than enough to run this)

As someone who wants to learn some coding would you lovely people at LTT suggest this? I've never worked in Linux but I've wanted to for awhile. And my coding knowledge is pretty poor. I am taking an intro to programming over the summer at my local college. :D

Luke didn't tell us how well it can handle basic web browsing. Yes, he mentioned bits of it but not enough IMO

Hello everyone. i was wondering if I could turn the Raspberry Pi 2 into a wireless offline game/media streaming machine and plug it into my TV while the PC is in the other room. I dont care about latency (as long as it isnt unplayable) as I will exclusively be playing single player games. If anyone knows about this kind of stuff or can redirect me to a website it would be much appreciated as I am a noob in Linux.

WOL is a pretty neat idea.  I need to set that up on my CubieBoard, maybe I'll buy a Pi :P

I like the idea of the pi but it always seems to fall a bit short for what I'd want to do with it. Chromecast is better for online media consumption, Android based media boxes are more expensive but are also more powerful and versatile. For being a general purpose "small PC" I have a netbook with Ubuntu on it that's about five years old which is far more useful in that regard. Can even (kinda) do Steam in-home streaming on it which I wouldn't even be able to mess around with on the pi.

 

I'm sure the thing is great for a little project or cool little idea. You could power it from an off-the-shelf a battery bank even which is cool. The little retro gaming machine idea is probably the coolest idea I've heard for it so far. I don't know, I've always found myself hovering over the buy button before bailing after wondering what I'd actually use it for. I hope you guys throw up some cool ideas because I'm kinda lost on what I'd actually use it for......

I bought a raspberry pi, put it in a nice case and configured it ... and now it's just getting dusty behind some monitor I never turn on.

 

It's cool, but you need to have a clear goal in mind before considering buying it.

 

The pies have one of the best communities on the Internet.

 The community is incredible indeed. This is why you should buy a Pi instead of another random mini PC.

 

Hey Luke, nice to see you showcase some DIY products. Any plans for future projects with the pi?

You mentioned the rpi2 could be used as a facebook machine at the beginning of the video and then mentioned it struggled with gmail and some web later on in the video... What's the low down, do you think it can reasonably be used as an office machine - running a few tabs in a browser and libreoffice apps?

 

I have one of the early rpi1 with 256MB ram and it's way too slow for browsing comfortably. Fine for adding wifi to electronics projects though. Though having gone through the hoops, the GPIO programming is rather finicky compared to a microcontroller - which are starting to get wifi a reasonable prices now.

When Raspbian is up and running, it 'll show the mobile version of Facebook. So yeah you can use Facebook but it isn't pretty.

Running a browser with two tabs and libreoffice at the same time isn't possible. Multitasking is VERY limited.

Watching youtube videos in 360p in a single tab is possible though.

 If you end up being disappointed by the Raspberry Pi: don't judge Linux by the Pi!

I'd recommend installing a lightweight Linux distro like Lubuntu on an old laptop for example, it'll give you a better introduction to Linux than the Pi.

Also remember you can use Linux without knowing any programming language, Linux distros are just another OS like Windows or OS X :)

Basic web browsing, yes, but 2 to 3 tabs maximum. Don't expect being able to watch Vessel videos on it.

I keep hearing people saying rpi2's are $30-35 but I can't seem to find them for anything less than $50-60 after shipping. After the sd card, the power, the possible need for a wifi adapter, the hdmi cable and the case you'll inevitably need, it ends up being just as expensive as any other media center (which is what I'd use it as). And weather stations are like $20 so why get a rpi for that.

You probably already have most of the cords and you prabably already have the power one but if not you can get just the cord for like $2 and if needed a wall wart wire one for like $8 on amazon which is 2 amps. The cheapest I found was on make.com for $40 with free shipping.

This was a decent introduction but pretty underwhelming on examples of what the pi is capable of

 

To be fair, it seems that most media outlets on the internet have no idea what the pi is for, it's just "cute"

I'm sure the thing is great for a little project or cool little idea. You could power it from an off-the-shelf a battery bank even which is cool. The little retro gaming machine idea is probably the coolest idea I've heard for it so far. I don't know, I've always found myself hovering over the buy button before bailing after wondering what I'd actually use it for. I hope you guys throw up some cool ideas because I'm kinda lost on what I'd actually use it for......

 

Agreed, always felt this way too.  It seems fun just for the sake of tinkering, but unless I have a firm idea of what exactly I want to tinker with, I can't bring myself to purchase one.  The retro game emulator boxes are by far the coolest implementation I've seen, but beyond that which I don't strictly need, I could like... make a thing to take care of an in-home garden or something?

 

With the Pi 2 being more powerful, making a (rather useless) little SuperPi cluster to fold would be fun.

just found out you can run parallels on raspberry pi, so you could run disk images from your server to the pi, might make a cool video to try since you guys have all that new server stuff

I'll be using Python with the PyGame library and the 3D printer at my school to make a bunch of different handheld games with specialized cases.

Sexy little device.  More power is certainly nice.  Probably would use it for basic web browsing, IRC, and streaming.  Maybe media hub of some variety.  Sadly I lack the patience to learn Linux.
