Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Why DDR2 RAM tho? Wouldn't GDDR5 or even DDR3 be better?

the CPU is running around 1GHz CPU

 

not exactly fast so i guess DDR2 is cheaper since it only needs 1GB of RAM

 

DDR3 dont come in 1GB flavour anymore

Did the officefunding campaign reach the Potter Cutout tier?

You should hook this thing up to a router and every time it sees traffic from your computer to social media, make it animate the cutout's wand hand and play 'Wingardium get-the-fuck-back-to-work-Luke!'

I like the idea of the pi but it always seems to fall a bit short for what I'd want to do with it. Chromecast is better for online media consumption, Android based media boxes are more expensive but are also more powerful and versatile. For being a general purpose "small PC" I have a netbook with Ubuntu on it that's about five years old which is far more useful in that regard. Can even (kinda) do Steam in-home streaming on it which I wouldn't even be able to mess around with on the pi.

 

I'm sure the thing is great for a little project or cool little idea. You could power it from an off-the-shelf a battery bank even which is cool. The little retro gaming machine idea is probably the coolest idea I've heard for it so far. I don't know, I've always found myself hovering over the buy button before bailing after wondering what I'd actually use it for. I hope you guys throw up some cool ideas because I'm kinda lost on what I'd actually use it for......

I actually tried to make a file (samba) sever using this, the unfortunate thing is that it has too little power out from those usb ports to drive a 2.5 inch hard disk

Really I would not treat it like a traditional computer

 

its great for kids / beginners who want to get into programming etc

 

and great for hobbyists wanting something cheap, like maybe creating a custom system like a remote door opener or something because it doesnt cost much and is easily programmable

While not a desktop replacement it is a bone fide computer and much more than a electronic device. An Arduino board is probably more suitable for the simpler projects.

I am not much of a programmer, so I would probably use it as media player that I can move around for my less used tvs.

Got three pi's yo; working on setting up f@h on 2 of them.  Other used for projects such as my mobile pen testing rig etc...

Hey Luke, nice to see you showcase some DIY products. Any plans for future projects with the pi?

You mentioned the rpi2 could be used as a facebook machine at the beginning of the video and then mentioned it struggled with gmail and some web later on in the video... What's the low down, do you think it can reasonably be used as an office machine - running a few tabs in a browser and libreoffice apps?

 

I have one of the early rpi1 with 256MB ram and it's way too slow for browsing comfortably. Fine for adding wifi to electronics projects though. Though having gone through the hoops, the GPIO programming is rather finicky compared to a microcontroller - which are starting to get wifi a reasonable prices now.

I have 4 and I love them so much! One to monitor my beehives, one to run kodi as my media center, one to open a gate to let the chickens out, and one as a weather station. These area amazing and for only $35 everyone should just get one to mess around with.

I keep hearing people saying rpi2's are $30-35 but I can't seem to find them for anything less than $50-60 after shipping. After the sd card, the power, the possible need for a wifi adapter, the hdmi cable and the case you'll inevitably need, it ends up being just as expensive as any other media center (which is what I'd use it as). And weather stations are like $20 so why get a rpi for that.

$35 is the base price for the board ONLY. As with anything you buy online, you have to pay shipping fees and exchange rates. After buying all the other things you need, expect to be in the $100 range.

The "advertised" $35 pricepoint is a bit disingenuous though, I would say. But yeah I was saying that it's $50-60 for just the board in Canada so while the unfavorable exchange rate plays a role, I do wish retailers could be bothered to be reasonable.

 

That being said maybe I'm just being cheap :P. I'll pick one up someday.
