If it's closed, i think alpha dogs is your best bet

It would be great if it had a removable cable but not necessary

Yeah you really don't need to spend $1000 on a pair of headphones :P

I'd say get a pair of Alpha dogs if you're really itching to spend money, if not I'd suggest looking at the modded t50rp's from @MayflowerElectronics or maybe a pair of Fostex TH600.

TBH there isn't really a big selection of over $200 closed cans.  Most things over that price range are open.

I've been searching for good closed headphones for a long time and so far nothing beats the final audio design Pandora Hope VI for me. The fostex th600 is great but it has very little isolation. There's also the Shure 1540 which is a bit cheaper and it's more bassy than the other 2 I mentioned. I didn't like alpha dogs at all. I don't think they're worth what they cost.

Explain why I should or shouldnt

If it's your first pair of "high-end" headphones, I wouldn't recommending going straight to "end-game".  I'd recommend experimenting with lower end-midrange stuff until you really find what you like, then drop a lot of money if you still want to.

IMO part of the experience of high-end headphones is the journey to get there.  I myself have owned a few $1000+ headphones, and IMO unless you have stupid amounts of money to waste, it's not really worth it when there's headphones that perform very similar at a much lower price range. ($200-500$ is great for price to performance IMO)

@NannerBeans can probably agree.

Metal communities seem to prefer Grado for it's supposedly 'fast reaction time' and kinda tinny sound signature, which they say go quite well with fast electric guitar. I'm not a metal fans, so can't confirm or deny it though....

The man has the money, don't be envy if you don't dare to spend that much amount of money on high-end audio gear.

WTF would you recommend M50X, there are better headphones for $180.

You have a lot of options with $1K budget. HE-560 is generally a very good headphone for almost everything. Grado has sparkly high which makes instruments sound more 'airy', but it generally lacks the bass compared to other pairs. Alpha dogs is excellent, but it's a closed headphone so it kinda depends whether you want closed or open headphone.

Of course, there are still great options below the $1K mark, Hifiman HE-400i or the AKG K712 are great in terms of bang for your buck.

Oh and uh, for amp and dac for any of these headphones, ODAC with schiit asgard should be more than enough.

I'm talking about the price:performance ratio and how that there are deminishing returns once you reach a certain pricepoint.

If the OP is willing to spend $1K on a headphone, but then he buy a $300 pair of headphone, very likely he'll be thinking "i wonder if i should upgrade or not"

$300 - $600 IMO is the sweet spot for a pair of headphone. At that point, you need to spend twice as much to get an "upgrade" rather than sidegrade. Some will say it should be $100 - 200, some think LCD-2 is a sweet spot. In general it's pretty different from person to person.

I've got the sennheiser HD 558. And my next open cans will be the hd 600. But I still need good closed headphones for public rockin' out

Try Telefunken Audion. It might be around 500$, but has a really good sound quality

A quick Google search tells me that there are a lot of headphones that are the same s that since it's just a rebranded headphone. Not worth the money by a long shot imo.

I was just so frustrated that every headphone I tried I didn't like. My head automatically disqualifies half the headphones out there. I ended up with some very unique headphones though. The fad Pandora Hope VI with Shure 1540 pads are amazing.

Uhmmm custom DT770's are closer to $400. Just because someone has a budget of $1000, doesn't mean that's how much they should spend.

He may very well be perfectly fine with headphones in the $300 range and thinks he has to spend more to get decent quality, when truth be told most people can't tell the difference between $450ish headphones and up.

As already stated there aren't a huge number of closed back headphones in the upper hundreds range.

Perhaps you should get more info before just assuming he needs to spend that much money ;)

A two-sided cable is cleary more audiofeel because of latency.
