New update

the system is fully rebuilt and now installing Win 7 Pro 64bit OS as we speak

although I keep getting pretty high reading for the CPU at 58 degrees also my HDD LED stays solid so i guess i got it the wrong way

now just leave it as it is to complete the OS install and installing the mobo drivers and should be good to go.

Could you take some pictures of the cooler with a different angle,it would be easier to identify. ;)

ok here is the updated build with the P45 board and QX6800 onboard

and powered up with CPUZID of the CPU

and now i understand also why my board is failing

either the board has corrosion or it got serious wrapping going on

Well CPUs weren't as efficient back then and c states below 1v wasn't really a thing, so with high ambients 50c idle would be possible.

And G0 is the cooler of the two steppings :)

And that old board looks like it had salt water on it or something.

the q6600 with G0 stepping idles about 35-40c on an arctic freezer pro 7

she has a gtx660 and a new EVGA psu coming sometime in the next week :)

also i love older builds like this , i wasnt into PC's when LGA775 was a thing so its nice to see how things used to be :P

EDIT : im also going to be doing my own Q6600 build , i am probably gonna get a NH D-14/15 to put on it , see how far i can push that puppy :P

I do like the old 775 builds, 775 was the fastest moving socket that I've ever seen.

I remember getting my first Core Duo system and it blowing my socks off (2006 MacBook Pro) However I was using a 2003 PowerBook 1GHz G4 at the time so anything could have kicked that systems arise.

I am using a 775 CPU in my Server Build! Which the system is running really well :)

Main Machine:  16 inch MacBook Pro (2021), Apple M1 Pro (10 CPU, 16 GPU Core), 512GB SDD, 16GB RAM

Gaming Machine:  Acer Nitro 5, Core i7 10750H, RTX 3060 (L) 6GB, 1TB SSD (Boot), 2TB SSD (Storage), 32GB DDR4 RAM

Other Tech: iPhone 15 Pro Max, Series 6 Apple Watch (LTE), AirPods Max, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PS3, Xbox 360

I tried to rub the white 'things' off

but they wont come off and they dont feel anything like raised or rough

if you look it has some sort of wave patterns

the board has flexed quite badly

The board has Intel Speed Stepping in the BIOS so I may enable that feature to save power if i am not gaming

I will monitors the temps and see if i need to swap the cooler

Unless you want to have the old board shipped to you, I will to junk this board.

Part 3 of the build log will be next week

The best thing about LGA 775 is it's so ubiquitous. Even the newest Cooler Master and Noctua coolers will fit it. And don't worry about your 50C+ temps, my QX9650 was running at 55C with my Hyper 212 Evo and oc'd to 3.85. They'll live comfortably up to about 70C and then they get a little hot under the collar.

Your motherboard and it's north bridge will be your choke point really. Make sure you keep it cool to achieve good a healthy overclock. I had to strap a new fan to the NB cooler on my 790i just to keep the NB & MCP below 60C, not to mention the VRMs. If your motherboard has the feature; and if it's a Gigabyte P45 it should, you can run your RAM unlinked from your FSB, that way you can keep your CPU overclock independent.

Awesome build, keep at it! Core 2 units are probably one of my three favorite chip types I've ever worked/played with.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

Interesting

are you still running the QX9650?

if you are not using it, can I unload that CPU from you?

my intention was to use the CoolerMaster V8 GTS cooler but I will need to swap the casing too as the cooler is huge.

the Extremes do feel like FX8350s with their high power draw even at stock.

I may need to refer to the manual for more info

right now it running the F9 BIOS and it down clocking itself when idling as shown in the last picture I took of CPU-Z ID

Haha if I feel like getting rid of it I'll keep you posted. My friend and I are cooking up ideas for it and a classic tri-sli water cooled setup in the near future.

Your board looks like it got cooked pretty bad. If it still works that's pretty amazing.

I've got a spare ECS P45T AD3 Black or two.

which board you were refering to?

if you mean the MSI board, yea it does look bad

I got a shock when i flipped the back to see those white patterns after taking it out

but before i took it out

it was able to boot to BIOS and i still could OC the E7200 by up to 3.12GHz :o

it seems the GA-EP45-UD3 looks like a high end board in its heydays

i mean the heatsink for the chipset and VRMs are linked by a long heatpipe and look at the size of the heatsink for the chipset :o

I was reading the manual for the Gigabyte board, but all the fancy naming features or OC settings is more confusing than my MSI

kinda lost touch with OCing older chips even that I am following @harrynowl LGA775 OC guide

i was recently given an old lga775 PC

i had a 1.8ghz pentium e2160 in it , i OC'd it to 2.8ghz on a stock intel cooler ( big type copper center ) with a max temp of 62c

AND i was able to seperate the ram from the CPU , ram was OC'd to 1400mhz (DDR2)

all this was done on a Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Phase 3:

Completing the build(Updating the driver duh...)

Yesterday was mostly doing some testing and updating the drivers for the system

Installed 3DMark, CPU-Z ID, GPU-Z ID, HWMonitor, Steam and my usual programs and Windows Update

system is def stable now and running good

Temps are hovering at 45+ degrees at idle when it clocking at 1.6GHz and will bounce to 2.93GHz at loads like Installing programs

max temps i see in HWMonitor is around 65+ degrees which seems to be impressive for a 130W CPU on the stock Intel Cooler with the copper center.

the only sad face mode was the Geforce 8600GT 512MB DDR2 is only a DX9/10 GPU and does not support 3DMark DX11 testings

it only could do Cloud Gate and the Ice Storm test but just barely, the Cloud Gate is just a 10fps slide show

With Unigine Heaven at 720P Med quality, it only could manage 10fps at most and drops to 4fps in high render areas.

also tried to power up the P31 board with the HD3470 512MB low profile GPU but the board refuse to let me boot to BIOS.

will try again next Sun

and will upload the pictures next week too

I will say this build log is considered done and dusted

Onwards to the next build.

Cheers and Regards

Good job getting this old hardware up and running again. If it still has a function and can be used, thats less electronic waste out in the land-fills and more fun for us. ;)

the onward to the next build is a teaser for a HTPC build with the Q6600 which i got from the P45 board initially

picking up the G41 and reuse the 2GB DDR2 800 OCZ RAM and getting a HTPC with SFX PSU with the casing and hopefully the HD3470 is working so that i can use for HDMI instead of VGA

Cool.

The only things in terms of desktop LGA 775 systems I have is my low profile HP with its 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo which runs so cool it doesn't need a heatsink at idle or light load. Then I have my laptop and ultrabook with their T9900 and T9400s.
