Case fan too loud?

Tim Drake

Basically I bought this fan (Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet) because of how good it is. Does it job amazingly but it seems to be very loud?

If I poke the fan and prevent it from moving, my case is near silent but if I am playing games, I want the fan there.

Any solutions?

set custom fan curve for it. So it only ramps up when CPU temp passes some point. MSI has fairly good BIOS/software for it or you can use Speedfan.

if the AF are PWM fans

you should be able to reduce the speed of the fan in MSI BIOS

if it just a 3 pin fan

looks like you might need to cut and solder a resistor

I have a low noise fan adapter but I want adjusting speeds :(

You can adjust a 3 pin fan but only to about 50%, most modern mobos allow it

Anyway to get it lower?

Will a fan controller lower it?

You might get it lower with mobo also. It depends both mobo and fan. Hardware controller can get it lower but limit is around 30%. You will need to get PWM fans for lower than that.

You can set the fan speed from the BIOS.

What cos it doesn't runs at 4v? What are you going for airflow or silence?

I bought a super cheap fan speed controller on eBay for my air540, I just wedged it in the unused disk drive slots.

I set all the fans to about 25% and its near silent at idle. only my gpu while gaming makes any noise.

I've got one and yes I found it incredibly loud. I just opened up my motherboards fan controller and set a custom curve, so that it only spins a meaningful amount when you're in intensive gaming. If you turn it right down to near the lowest setting its perfectly quite, but when it spins up fully its very loud.

I think they're almost designed as CPU or waterblock fans.

It's way too loud. I bought quiet edition for a reason and even at 50%, it's the loudest thing in my PC.

The only thing I can suggest are be quiet pure wings fan as they are silent at 75% and at 100% they are quiet but have no motor noise.

Thing is fans are a lottery when you buy them. I've had 2 identical fans before and one has awful motor noise the other makes no noise

I'm picking up 3 SW2 140mm fans, if they aren't satisfactory I'll be sure to report.

On another note, I'll have to agree with what @rentaspoon mentioned. I have two R2 fans from Fractal Design, both 140mm -- one is apparently louder than the other, at the same voltage.

The only problem with maximum silence is price, as the SW2s by Be Quiet! aren't cheap. What I'm hoping for however is good airflow, with low pressure noise ... something the Silent Wings 2 should offer. The "Silent" Fractal R2 fans are relatively quiet, but not what I had hoped for and they move almost no air at respectable settings.

I'm really surprised that you consider the AF120 Quiet Edition loud. I was going to replace my front intake fans with the LED versions of Corsiar AF120s or SP120s. Below are the advertised stats for AF120 Quiet Edition:

Operating Voltage 7V - 12V

Performance at 12V

Airflow: 39.88 CFM

Static Pressure: .5 mm/H20

Sound Level: 21 dBA

Speed: 1100 RPM

Power Draw: 0.08 A

Another popular fan are Noctua NF-F12s and they are PWM controlled and Pressure optimised (ideal for rads/hdd cages):

Acoustical Noise: 22,4 dBA

Acoustical Noise with (Low Noise Adapter).: 18,6 dBA

Rotational Speed (+/- 10%) 1500 RPM

Rotational Speed with (Low Noise Adapter). (+/- 10%) 1200 RPM

Min. Rotational Speed (PWM, +/-20%) 300 RPM

maybe the NF-F12 with the Low Nose adapter would be a good choice?
