Overclock it to max capacity, i would say around 4.0-4.4ghz is normal for these chips (going off Nehalem)

Your CPU still has a lot more IPC than the FX CPU's, so it will not really have a problem feeding a GTX 970, plus you have HT which does aid performance in some newer games now.

Core 2 Duo's and Quads are still fine, your i7 is good to go for awhile.

Probably a few years before you need a CPU upgrade.

For most games this is true. But if you have lower end Core 2 quad, it will bottleneck even a GTX 750ti. (I run a q8200 in my HTPC and some games, like Watch_Dogs, are unplayable)

The i7 860 should be fine, even with a powerfull gpu like the 970. Some Games might run a little slower, but you still should get decent framerates.

Core i5-750 user reporting in. It's enough to let me get to 60 FPS in most games still.

I'm personally considering an upgrade in the foreseeable future, but I'm still trying to decide if I should just stick it out until Skylake is released. Your 860's Hyperthreading may actually be giving it slightly longer legs in some recent games than my 750, though.

1080p

uhmm i think i might ditch this cpu and this old computer and go for this build http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WfZgqs (austin evans higlighted it on youtube)

it's a great system i've in fact been recommending a similar build for some time now...it makes a lot of sense.

just take a look though the core i5-4590 ATM is only 9$ more and comes with a 300mhz higher boost clock...it's worth it.

EDIT: there you go i just editied your build, included a motherboard about the same quality and features but better price, same for memory

and this PSU is vastly superior...also you get the i5-4590
