eGPU vs. Desktop (GTX970)

miniCotulla

Hello,

Next week I get a GTX970, and because my PC already bottlenecked the GTX760 I thought of different solutions:

PC (same setup as before but instead of the GTX760 a GTX970):

Intel Core2Quad q9450

4gb DDR2 (800 mHz)

PCIe 1.1 x4 slot

or

Notebook (eGPU compatible):

Intel Core i7 2720QM

16gb DDR3 (1333 mHz)

PCIe 2.0 x1 slot (via: http://www.banggood.com/EXP-GDC-Laptop-External-PCI-E-Graphics-Card-p-934367.html)

Wich one would work better? How much will the GTX970 be bottlenecked by a slower PCIe interface?

what.the.fuck? WICH DUMBASS TOLD YOU YOU JUST NEED A GOOD GPU AND THATS ALL? I will be suprised if you'd get atleast 5fps in minecrtaft on low. and I'd stay with desktops and buy new mobo+cpu+cpu cooler+ram+

Both suck. I would return the GTX 970 and upgrade your desktop.

the 970 comes from the EVGA Step Up programm, if I return it I won't have any GPU, but my old Quadro FX 370.

Gaming performance wasn't that bad with the GTX 760:

BF3: 45-60 FPS on high, but the CPU bottlenecked there (CPU: 100%, GPU: 60 - 70%)

There is no money for upgrading my PC now:(

I only need to know which solution is less worse: CPU bottleneck on the desktop or PCIe bottleneck on the notebook

My Brother's Q9550 and a 6950 outperforms my friend's Asus laptop with an i7 and dual GPU (I think dual 580s).

So... you are still probably best off with the desktop until you can upgrade.

Welcome to the forum!

Chances are the 760 is already being bottlenecked by your cpu, pcie bus and ram. Before considering a 970, you should upgrade the rest of the system.

Get something like this if you have the money:

intel core i5 4690k

asus z97-a

kingston hyperx fury 1600mhz 2x4gb

You'll see a significant performance improvement.

On a side note, you really should keep a gpu for at least 3 years as a general rule to avoid wasting money. Therefore if you can't afford to upgrade now you might as well just wait. I think a 970 would be bottlenecked so hard by the rest of the pc that you wouldn't see much of an improvement at all by getting one.

eGPUs are a terrible idea, don't even consider them for now.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I testet it and the notebook Core i7 only gets to 15-30 % in BF3

Maybe your brother overclocked the q9550, wich is not possible on my Mainboard

The laptop is reasonable spec

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

If the GPU is from EVGA step up then get it anyway.

Linus is my fetish.

Will the PCIe 2.0 x1 wich equals PCIe 1.1 x2 (if I'm correct) be worse bottleneck than the CPU from my Desktop?

Get the gtx 970. And if you can build a new platform. That would be the ultimate option with your best personal experience.
