HOTAS, K&M or Controller? (Poll)

I was just wondering how most of you guys were controlling your ship.  I'm using a HOTAS set up so far.  I'm enjoying it, but I have lots to learn and get used to...  Also, I was wondering if any of you use Voice Attack and/or Trackir (or something similar).

Which HOTAS setup are you using? I thought about getting one, right now I'm looking at the Rhino. I don't know if it's worth the 200 bucks though.

I have the Rhino and if I was making my decision now I'd get something better. It's beautiful and super comfortable but it's built really poorly. I've had some problems with it like buttons not registering hits, squicking plasticand greasing problems. Next time I'll get the Thrustmaster Warthog or something along those lines.

@AstralKatana I'm currently using a Saitek X52 pro, and I've been pretty happy with it.  I purchased it since I'll be using it with Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous.  I'm new to the whole HOTAS thing so I can't compare my experience to anyother set up.  If you can hold off, i hear that RSI/Star Citizen has something in the works with a HOTAS/controller company like Saitek or CH Products.

I've been playing with a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and I prefer it to a mouse/kb.  it good for the money to see if its some thing you'd enjoy.   I will say the throttle is usable but not great or ideal.

I'll be getting a X55 Rhino since thats the most I'm willing to spend on a HOTAS.   having your stick and throttle separate is much better then what I have.

i tried voice attack but it didn't really help that much.  hornets still blew me up all the same.

we should make a list of profiles for joysticks / hotas ect so people have a bit of help getting them setup.

currently mine is super duper twitchy and i know their are profiles out there for the inf type editor for SC

i've got the Saitek X52 and Saitek ProFlight Rudder Pedals, but i'm not even bothering to try using them until they give us the ability to fully customize controls in SC. for now, i actually kind of like the keyboard and mouse setup. Also just found out yesterday that TrackIR works now, finally. i havent tried it with mine yet but i'm sure it'll help situational awareness in dogfighting.

Thats a great idea!  I'm new to joysticks and xml profiles.  It took me awhile to understand what xml was...  Even if we just have links to different xml profiles, I think that would be helpful.  I'm at work right now, but maybe when I get home I'll try to put something together.

Next patch in couple of weeks will introduce custom mappings so we can just be patient for just a little longer ;)

Ive been talking to a guy called lonestar in pm's on the official forum for SC . he has quite a few setups going already im going to try the one he recomended me and get back to this topic.

If it works out well I Will ask him if i may relink some of his profiles and tutorials here for everyone to use.

as on the main forum his stuff just gets buried anyways.

He has XML profiles for Single joystick / dual joysticks / joystick + mouse / Joystick + Mouse + pedals and other configs too.

Well, i sold my X52 to a friend. might pick up a X55 or something later. but due to no key rebinding i didn't bother to use my X52 much so eh KB+M will do for now.

If you want to buy a brand new and already not working x-55 I might have something for you my friend ;)

After trying Saitek X55 HOTAS, I'm convinced that joysticks are inferior to mice when it comes to precision aiming.  I would love to have just the throttle separately to go together with the mouse aim. I'm sending it back since I don't think the X55 Throttle is worth 200 euros on itself.

@Zerreth Sadly, I have to agree...  I found it so much easier to aim with the mouse.  I was really hoping to just use my HOTAS set up, but maybe in the future I'll just get better or maybe they will adjust things.

Except if you go try to play Elite Dangerous the joystick is much better then a mouse... its more precise and easier to fly with.. why? because they actually setup the controls with a proper profile and curve adjustments in game and the default profile is very good for joystick in elite dangerous.

Its 1000x better than in SC..

Starcitizen has a real problem right now imho and who ever is in charge of the project needs to address the controller issues now before they move on to the next phase.

Right now we are testing flight models and concepts but they have not actually fixed the controls for joystick and handheld controllers.

That needs to be fixed first and foremost.

if you were to go watch a Elite dangerous vs start citizen on joystick video.

here is a example

but if you were to play both you would see what i mean.

SC is terrible to play with joysticks.

ED has fixed guns basically that auto focus on the same spot when lined up on target.. and what do you know i can line it up perfectly even in dogfights without much issue at all.

but in SC i'm constantly having issues staying on target or over aiming back and forth because the ships either flight model is gimped or the aiming is to overly sensitive and just keeps over aiming.

i don't think its anything to do with the joysticks or mice being more precise i think its what SC did to their controls and flight model that's doing.it.

I actually thought my Flight stick was broken or something in SC i thought id have to be buying a new setup soon .. then i got ED and nothings wrong at all. perfectly fine in every way.

@solarflare

Well having your guns auto aim when "locked on" or having them auto aim within a region around the screen center is basically a showcase of it not being precise enough. This is the same auto aim console fps principle applied to a flight game on pc. On top of that guns that are not gimbal mounted are still fucked. Having played freelancer tirelessly online and recently war thunder, I don't believe there's anything wrong with mouse flight. It's just that the two modes of input don't play well with each other. You don't see console PC crossover FPS games because there is a disparity in the precision and response of the controls. ( FYI in the vid you posted (0.8 build) the gimbal guns had quite a large amount of auto correction compared to the current build (0.9) so aiming was more forgiving back then )

So either they change it that gimbal guns always auto aim when in the region around the screen center for both input methods (so make mouse effectively act like a joystick) or there will always be advantage to use one over the other.
Also, the idea of fixed guns is ok-ish (see torpedoes in freelancer) but man it becomes totally unusable when the aurora ONLY has fixed guns. What a shit way to experience arena commander. I specifically upgraded to the 300i to get the gimbal gun mounts.
Disparity in the Fixed guns isn't nearly as pronounced, but I wouldn't want to play star citizen with only fixed gun mounts.

they dont auto aim they auto converge. ...it makes it so both lasers hit the same spot instead of 1 or the other.

In ED that is..

in SC its just borked and sucks atm

you get two different aim spots for gimbals and fixed guns which makes literally 0 sense.

Ontop of that the ship bounces around and cant be moved in any way with finesse or accuracy when using joystick.

So I just came back to the game after a bit off around the first 2 patches. What did they do to M+KB I can't even get close to flying straight with my aurora or for that matter shoot anything. I am hoping its just time away but man the speed increase with this new aiming issue is causing super jousting with no shots on target. :(

With the latest update (13.1) I mapped strafe forward and back to my W & S keys and double mapped them to the same movements in decoupled mode. A & S is mapped to roll. For me flying how handles like a dream and I can do some really cool decoupled fly by shootings :) Do note that I have Motion blur and Vsync turned off via the user.cfg file, since the performance is SO much better without them.

I just got SC two days ago and so far have been K&M.  If I stick with it (and E:D) for the long term I'll probably spring for a HOTAS setup.

You don't get one lead for gimbal and one lead for fixed. Different weapons have different speed so they convergence with target at different point. You have leads for each weapon groups, if you don't want different leads either use only one weapon group or use only one weapon model. But if you have different weapon models in a weapon group, eiher you can only hit when you have a solution (aka if you use the lead) for a weapon model or you can only hit by chance for all other weapon models in that weapon group.
