You can get it on a usb stick and then boot off that. I still like to have a dvd writer though, it does come in useful.

If you have a dvd drive, there is no reason to throw it away. It would be just stupid unless you have some specific space constrictions in your case or you can0t stand looking at it.

optical drives can still be useful, I use mine pretty often.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

DVD drives are like $20 now days and you can even find some for free in old computers, if you have one its always worth it just to have a dvd drive in your build

I decided to put one in my current build, it's the cheapest and most reliable way to back up your stuff, one of my vehicles has a cd player so I still burn cd's now and then. Worse case scenario you could take it out if it's due to aesthetics and put back in when you need, most cases are tool less now days.

Forgive me El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education...

Technically you don't need a DVD drive for much. I have one in a few PCs mainly for ripping and burning CDs, but I have some PCs without an ODD. You can insall Windows 7 (and 8/8.1 and possibly Vista) from a USB drive as @tomlambert01 said above.

You can use that link to download the ISO of the correct version of Windows, then use Windows USB/DVD Download tool to put the ISO onto a USB drive (4GB minimum):

You can also use Rufus, which I recommend as it is more versatile and generally useful:

Most cases still come with ODD bay so I don't see why not install one if you got it. Most good cases also have door to keep it clean.
