"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered."

On Friday, I built my first ever PC with these brand new parts:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus Z97-AR ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Kingston Fury Black Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Seagate  1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Dual Superclocked ACX Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Blackout with Window ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Monitor: Acer H236HLbid 60Hz 23.0" Monitor
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter
Keyboard: Cooler Master CM Storm Devastator Gaming Bundle Wired Gaming Keyboard w/Optical Mouse

However, whenever I try to run a GPU benchmark or play a game, the computer freezes and locks up, the screen goes black for a few seconds, and a Windows error message pops up saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 340.52 stopped responding and has successfully recovered." Sometimes the same freezing occurs whenever I do everyday tasks, like opening up Google Chrome. I even tried downgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 7, but the problem is still occurring. Plus GeForce Experience installed the drivers for my GPU, so I don't know what's wrong. Does anyone know what's wrong? Thanks.

it may seem that the driver install was not complete or was corrupted

http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html

use the above program to remove the driver

and re-download and install the drivers

if the above problem still persist

check if the GPU works with another PC

if it is confirmed to be GPU fault

RMA the GPU
