Logitech G710+ review Stay Away!

I'm going to get a bunch of reviews out of my system so people can see them on here and then I'll calm down a bit. I am going to review a keyboard that I have a very emotional attachment to, a very negative emotional attachment.

If you Google "G710+ broken keycaps" you will come across a forum thread on the Logitech forums that's 10 pages long. I posted very passionately in this forum a few times because I wanted the world to know my horror

http://forums.logitech.com/t5/G-Series-Gaming-Keyboards/G710-broken-keys-from-normal-use-plastic-tops-Where-to-get/td-p/1075449

This keyboard has key caps that break... that's all there is to review. You can't review the typing comfort of a keyboard if the keycaps are broken. You can't enjoy macros, the nice lighting, the media keys, the volume knob, none of that if you can't use the freaking keyboard. I would actually like to see what Linus or Luke think about this because they're big keyboard guys. But they're probably busy so I won't bug them.

The keys that still work sit on a cherry MX brown key switch. The media keys are rubber domed. The volume knob adjusts volume. There's a USB passthrough... sigh... Ok let me just post the pictures. I give this keyboard 0 stars for usability and customer service. If they would have just let me send in the keys to get them replaced I would love the keyboard, but they wanted me to send the entire keyboard in.

Update: I actually went halfway through an RMA and then gave up, saved up $100 and bought a Corsair K70. The experience made me not want to be a Logitech customer anymore. I take pride in my tech toys. I wouldn't be able to enjoy a replacement keyboard knowing that Logitech tried to jerk me around and wouldn't let me send them the keys back and they initially wanted me to pay the shipping costs and only offered to pay the shipping costs when I posted negative reviews on Amazon and contacted their head office. And this may be a very negative review but I stand by it because they wouldn't play nice with me. This was the 2nd keyboard I had problems with. The first one stopped lighting up a week after I got it and I sent it back to Amazon. The second one had broken keycaps. 0 stars is appropriate IMO.

more update: Here are some more forum threads about it:

Contact Logitech, they are a very compliant company when it comes to RMA.

I have one, I had the issue with a single key, and they offered to replace the keyboard. And I am very sure you could just get them to send you caps.

And even at that, I know few people personally that are having this issue, it's just me. It isn't the biggest problem in the world, and it isn't something to completely write off the keyboard for.

There are plenty of keyboards with issues. The K70 and K95 are notorious for LED failiure. The BlackWidow Ultimate is not exactly built well. The BW Tournament has a terrible on board Mini USB connector.

I had the very same thing happen as the poster and yourself. Logitech had me send the keyboard back to them I would of preferred them just send me a new cap or hell I'd pay for one. But they do offer the ability for you to have one sent to you while you send the old one back. If I remember they put your card on file in case you aren't compliant but that shouldn't be an issue.

The only thing I can say I don't care about the keyboard is.. the fact it uses non standard cherry keys. The space bar and other "key" keys use non standard connection points or are bigger or smaller and so that makes it more difficult to customize your keys. For example you can't buy a PBT keycap set for a G710+ because they use non standard keys. The Ducky set would work on most of the keys but some they wouldn't.

The thing I bolded out is pretty common, it's called a cross-ship.

"non standard keys"? They use normal keys, but the spacing isn't very common. I was easily able to get a kit of keycaps from MaxKeyboards for my G710+ though. You can buy PBT caps for it, but the spacing is the issue.

i'd say this is an overly negative review...

the lighting is nice, the media keys work, it has just enough g-keys to be usefull. my left control cap did break, and i havent bothered to call logitech about, cause its not that big of a deal.  its a nice solid keyboard overall maybe one day ill consider either replacing or fixing the cap, but today is not that day

RIght I think max keyboards is the only group I've seen that will fit. Its there universal kit If I'm not mistaken. You are probably right the spacing is probably the issue. But also to when I take off my Ducky Premier keyboards space bar it will not fit my G710+ the supports on the bottom won't line up and I think the length is different to.

i stand by my comment in this being an overly negative and dramatic review. you had a broken keycap and freaked out. you even mentioned several positives in your review, but still give it a 0 for a lousy key cap.  you shouldn't be surprised you have to pay shipping when YOU'RE SHIPPING SOMETHING.

before i get called a logitech fanboy, im not saying they used high quality plastic, shit mine broke too. not to mention the paint on the keys is fairly low quality. had mine for a year, and the paint on my wasd keys have all but completely smudged off.  but overall, its a great keyboard, its sturdy, the lighting looks great, media buttons work fine and are both out of the way and not not hard to reach. several programmable modes, 6 programmable G keys and cherry mx browns which are awesome. its a good keyboard and i'd recommend it to anybody(which if you looks at some of my posts, i already have). and i plan on buying another one when this one eventually dies(unless something better comes along)

I have the G710+ as well, but for me only the escape key has broken, it isn't a big deal for me. You must be hitting your keys pretty hard to break them so easily.

I think it's an excellent keyboard apart from the keycap issues that some users experience - and the volume control wheel is a little loose. It doesn't have distinct bumps like a mouse scroll wheel does.

I don't think I freaked out at all. I did what anyone would do if they bought a $130 toy and had it break within the warranty period and then was told by the company that they needed to send the ENTIRE keyboard back at their expense. Hell, I would have gladly paid the shipping fees if they simply wanted me to send the key caps back, but they wanted a keyboard that weighs a few pounds. The shipping at UPS would have been over $20. They should pay for the shipping if they have a manufacturing defect in their product. It's perfectly reasonable to expect them to pay for it.

I also have a G710+, and I have a TON of broken key caps. Mine broke when I took them off to clean them. Now, I was very careful when I removed the keys, and they still broke. Both CTRL key caps are broken, along with a fair amount of others with hairline fractures in the plastic molds.

I will say this. I LOVE this keyboard. It's fucking awesome... mostly. The lighting is great. It feels SUPER sturdy and durable, the MX Brown switches feel great, the volume wheel feels smooth and just right.

The only downside is they cheaped out on the Key Caps. I honestly even considered buying a new one to get the caps replaced. (I would RMA it but I spilled Soda on the keyboard so I'm likely out of warranty because of that - despite the fact that it still works great once I cleaned it).

If they make a revision to the G710+ (Or a replacement/upgraded model), the only thing they really need to do is to use stronger key caps that resist breaking. If they did that, I would literally throw money at them. Other then those stupid ass key caps, the keyboard is kickass, and by far my favourite mechanical.

I looked at buying replacements online, but I really like the look of the laser etched keys that come with it, and I've yet to find suitable 3rd party replacements (Unless anyone has a link to send me?)

I think Logitech will provide you with a shipping label if you complain that you have to ship the entire keyboard just for a few broken keycaps. This person at geekhack had experienced pretty good customer service: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59567.0

So far I had only one broken keycap (the Crtl key) but it was after removing the O-rings on the keycaps so I doubt it would have cracked if I didn't remove them.

I think the major complaint was that he had to ship the keyboard back. Period. Meaning he'd lose use of the keyboard while it's gone. For key caps, I think that's silly. Logitech should ship him new key caps without having to return the keyboard. Or at the very least, he should be allowed to ship JUST the key caps back to logitech for replacement.

If they would have at least sent me the shipping label from the beginning and pinky promised me that they would try their super duper utmost hardest to get it to me ASAP, I would have cut them a break. But they jerked me around a bit and only after I really went into it with them did they decide to rectify the situation. That left a bad taste in my mouth as a customer and made me not want to do business with them anymore.

Have you removed any key caps at all? Mine was totally fine until I did that. Other then the caps cracking though, it's a damn good keyboard.

Honestly it's still a kickass keyboard. The major risk seems to be when removing caps. Plus thousands of people have bought them and not complained. As they say, only the vocal minority scream when something goes wrong. When something goes right, people just continue using their awesome thing.

This.

I have one, and the cap cracking issue happened to me. They offered to replace the KB, but I declined so I wouldn't be without my only mechanical keyboard. I decided instead to just buy some new caps, since I had my eyes on a set from MaxKeyboards anyways.

Honestly it's still a kickass keyboard. The major risk seems to be when removing caps. Plus thousands of people have bought them and not complained. As they say, only the vocal minority scream when something goes wrong. When something goes right, people just continue using their awesome thing.

You're wrong about the issue happening when removing the keys. I never removed any of the keys and some of the people I talked to never removed the keys. They simply started breaking. And removing the keys is what they were made for so it's unacceptable for them to have key cap issues due to removing keys.

I get 60 frames at 1080p on a dual core APU. Ask me how.
