Setting up my TV as a second monitor to watch movies on

minimalist
Go to solution Solved by Askew,

780ti. Sorry it took so long to respond.

Just plug it into the HDMI port on the 780ti and it will add automatically.

Then go into nvidia control panel, go to set up multiple displays and then you can tell it which side of your primary monitor the new display is, this way you will move your mouse to the correct edge of your primary monitor in order to have the cursor travel straight into the TV.

You will also be to select the tv as an audio device in the Windows playback devices setting, and have the PC audio sent through the HDMI to the tv if and when desired.

Next, look in the menu of the tv and see if it has an RGB range full/limited option or any kind of option that looks like that. Post back with your findings on this part, as if you are going to be watching movies on the tv it is important to have the colour space set up correctly, I'll guide you through that next.

If you can't find out, post the model of your TV. :)

So I want to set up my TV so that it's connected to my PC and I can watch my collection of movies on it.  Is it better to run both video outs from the GPU or split it up so that 1 to my monitor is from the gpu and the one to my tv is from my mobo?  Also, it shouldn't be a problem to get full screen on my tv with ease for movies and then work on my monitor, either browsing or playing games, right?

If you're playing full screen games or applications your second monitor will turn black and cant be used (its a windows limitation). So you would need to use windowed.

No problem, just check the tv/post the model of it here and we will deal with the colour space, that's the last thing to set up as far as the actual connection goes.

In the advanced settings it should have an hdmi black level setting, I read that your particular TV has an auto mode so leave it on that and it should detect the colour space.

Go to that menu and see if that setting is set to auto, if it is you should be fine to just leave it. :)

also, for my 70inch tv there was a huge input lag. it felt like you where dragging your mouse through soup. if this happens, make sure you turn the tv off any enhancements, or find a "gaming" mode. this only happens with some tvs though.

Open the sound menu (you can right click the speaker in the system tray and select 'playback devices'.

It should look like this, let me know what appears on that list, if your TV is connected with HDMI and switched on then it should appear in the menu.

Right click on it and select 'set as default device'

some programs like VLC will require that you close and re-open them after switching sound device, some will not.

Hmmm, is there any way to set it up so that sound comes out of the TV and my desktop speakers?  This way seems to be one or the other.

Unfortunately one of the limitations of Windows is this exact situation, there is no reliable way of doing this in the operating system.

If your PC speakers have an aux input, you could run RCA cables from the TV's line out audio back to that aux input on the PC speakers and do it manually that way.

No problem, if I know the answer to something why not help out.

I have the same setup (not the same TV but using a TV for movies with my PC) and I just switch between devices just like you'll be doing, you'll get used to it and it's a lot easier than having to swap a cord over every time! :)

I'd just like to add that if you use VLC media player for your movies you can set the TV as the output for VLC while having the rest of your system still use your speakers etc. I run my TV with whatever I want to watch in the background with their sound coming from the TV and play games with sound coming from my 5.1 setup simultaneously and never have to swap a cable or changing a setting every time or anything.
