Should I go audiophile ?

 Hey guys,

I've been thinking about this for quite a long time. I still can't make a decision. I decided that I was going to buy a pair of G930s. But I heard all the fuss about adiophile grade headphones. So I'm looking at the Q 701s. I'm not really sure if I should spend the extra 100 bucks. I've only been using gaming headsets... closed ones. These are open... and I'm npt sure if they are going to deliver a better experience. I also wanted the G930 because of the Wireless. But the thing is that I haven't tried Adiophile headphones, and I don't know if it's worth it to get a wired headset just for the quality. Mind you, I will be just playing games with them and I am not going to buy an AMP or anything like that. I will be using the onboard. I expect everybody to say "GOOO FOR THE AUDIOPHILE HEADPHONESSSS !!!", mainly because this is the Audio part of the forum, not the Peripheral. I would really appreciate if someone who has tried both the G930s and the AKG Q 701s, can give his opinion. Thank you for your time,

i have the g930 and the wireless feature is the best thing ever. <3 they are a bit on the heavy side though so it'll take you some time to get used to them.

I think you should try open headphones and see if you like them, personally I prefer them to the more open and alive sound compared to closed ones, but a trade off is the outside noise coming in and my music going out. I only use them in my room, which is very quiet so it doesn't me or anyone else.

I think the idea of going audiophile is the wrong attitude, because I think you should feel like you want to experience more of your music, because you are unhappy or just want a bit more than you are getting now. If you are going to use the headset for gaming you should be fine, but if you want really good music and movie performance you'll have to pick up two seperate products, which might be more expensive.

my advice would be to go audio store and testing different high end headphones and seeing if you prefer them over the headset

having a corsair 2000 and a growing pile of "audiophile" headphones

I use them all but the ones that get used the most are my open backed headphones and the wireless headset.

the corsair is convenient and awesome when I need to grab a drink or take a leak without missing out on anything happening in game but it is nowhere near as accurate spacially immersive as my open backed one.

Well do you care about sound? If you are like me and you are not a huge music listener and you don't particularly care for an amazing experience listening to something I'd say stick with what works. Sure audiophile headphones are better(there is really no argument there, one is designed by people with years of experience in audio) but they are expensive and audio is a very expensive hobby to get into. However if you don't need or particularly want it you will be fine without it.

You don't have to spend a lot to get good sound. The Pioneer SE-A1000 are only 50ish bucks, and there's many other options as well.

if he doesn't listen to music at his computer and stuff that's fine but if he games at all then that's a big huge

FUCK NO for gaming headsets even with the "7.1" or built by gamers for gaming or whatever the marketing department plasters on the boxes that day a good open backed headphone will stomp over a "7.1" FPS recon master gaming headset

Well, I do like listening to music, but I mainly play games. When I don't... I listen to music. I just want to know if going Open design will immerse me more.

That's exactly what I'm looking for with a Wireless headset. But I'm not sure if the Open design will immerse me more into the game.  I mean... my first couple of headsets were cheapo 10 $ headsets. I wore them untill they broke, and then I went and bough a different pair for the same price, and so on and so on. And I thought that my 10$ headsets sounded good and I was really happy with the sound, untill I bought a pair of closed Turtle Beaches, with cloth-ish earpads. The difference was HUUUGE. My mind was just blown. (I will try to find the model of the TBs, and post it in a couple of hours). But then they broke and I bought a pair of ASUS Orion Pros. I thought that the sound quality wasn't so good. I would actually say that the Turtle Beaches had a much more better sound reproduction. But whatever... they broke too (the cable got broken from the inside, and the left earcup worked only when I twisted the cable). Whatever, I am going to be getting a refund. So I'm getting 100$, and I am going to be adding another 100$. SO I have a budget of 200$. I'm just not sure if I should keep going Closed design or move to the Open. I think I could try the Open design. A friend has a pair of Sennheiser 360s. Are they open ? If so, I will try them and see if I like the way they sound. Thank you for your time and sorry for writing a bible here, but I just wanted to share my experience with headphones, so it can be easy for you to help me. Thank you :)

So my gaming experience is going to be much better with the AKG Q 701s rather than with the G930s ? Better explosions, footsteps and shit ? Should I sacrifice Wireless for it ? I mean... you have both Wireless gaming and audiophile headphones/headsets. What would you go with for yourself if you were gaming a lot, and listening a bit of music ?

I used to own a couple turtle fucking beaches as well... if I had a time machine I won't go back to kill hitler but I'd go back to smack myself for buying 2 turtle beaches.

as far as gaming stands.... and as I wrote before the gaming headsets/headphones I've owned before suck compared to an open backed headphone

I feel like the sound is clearer and not as muffled, but a trade off to open end headphones are the "weaker" bass

Generally I would say that audiophile grade headphones should reproduce audio better in any circumstances when compared to a gaming headset. Not to mention that you get much better quality and longer-lasting product too I believe. However in the case of seeking great audio for gaming with "explosions and gun shots", the AKG Q701 might not be the best choice as it is described by most people to be lacking bass, hence lacking the "oomph" and bass impact. It is greatly praised for it's soundstage though. You might find neutral or slightly warm/bassy headphones to give a better audio experience when gaming I believe, so something like Sennheiser HD558.

Well, I've heard lots of good things about the 558s, but they don't look as Smexy as the the AKG Q 701s. And IF the closed type of headsets deliver better explosions and clearer footsteps, then I would go with that. BTW I listen to a lot of Rap and House/Electro.

If those are your genre preference, I don't think the Q701 would be right for you. Based on the headphone's sound signature, something along the lines of vocal or classical would be fitting for the Q701. I could be wrong though, so do try the Q701 out before you purchase them to be sure. Or buy them from stores that accept returns so that you can return them if you find that it might not fit you.

Also, clearer footsteps and realistic explosions are not limited to closed headphones. As long as the headphones are good, it'll sound great. Do check out barnacules' Sennheiser HD800 review on his impression with gaming  :)

At first i loved my G930 but soon they went to hell. They started to sound bad and o my gosh the bass SUCKED, it ruined a large portion of the end of bioshock infinite for me :/ I contacted them and they sent me another pair and these were broken aswell, left earcup was softer than the other. I check my EQ's and everything and they were fine, it was another hardware problem. I sent them back again and then got a third pair and this pair was all around bad, bad sound quality as a whole. Amazon said they would give me a refund even though the window for a refund was over ( Thank you so much amazon) Then i got the Pc360's which is a great headset, i would suggest that one because its fairly cheap. I only returned that one because the G4me Zero was on sale the week after and so i refunded the Pc360's at amazon and got the G3me Zero's. Now the G4me Zero has poor packaging and this the earcups were warped and dont sit on my head correctly and the bass was lacking, PC 360 had more, and so now im getting the Mayflower V3's. I would not suggest the G930, i would suggest the PC360's.

I dont have any other weird peripherals and i run off Ethernet so no interference was present for the G930s. Never buying another logitech product ever

Ill be happy to answer and more questions
