Dota 2 Vs. League of Legends

Go to solution Solved by Remilia,

Both games will run okayish on a toaster, although LoL can be run on a lighter. As already said, there's no winner here in terms of gameplay. Apples vs oranges, neither of the games have clear qualities that put it above the other. If you're into RTS and like more "hardcore" games with high learning curve, go for Dota 2. If not, then go for LoL. You may think "why not both?", the problem with that is they're not like traditional games where your learn the "necessary knowledge" in the first ten minutes of the game. There's tons of characters and a lot of customization in both games, that's what I mean by "necessary knowledge". It's not literally necessary, but knowing what your character does, how you customize efficiently and how you play against other characters efficiently is VERY important to play effectively. A good player should know roughly know how each character is customized and what every character is capable of. We're speaking about 105-120 characters, it may sound like a lot, but you'll learn it by yourself by just playing.

Point is, you're going to have to sink a lot of time into the game of your choice if you want to fully enjoy it. Stick to one of them until you've really got the hang of it, learning the other one won't be that hard since they are generally similar.

The genre was born in Dota, a Warcraft III custom map, a few other games, mainly Heroes of Newerth made a game from that map with better multiplayer and some things figured out. Riot created then LoL, which takes a mixture of both Dota, HoN and some other games and adds it's own ideas into it. Meanwhile the creator of Dota (Icefrog) was on a legal battle with Blizzard, while he tried to find a way of make the game on it's own.

Gotta correct you on this one. The beginning was a fairly simple tug-of-war custom map for Starcraft,, which later spawned the Aeon of Strife map, which in turn spawned the DotA map. Icefrog is not the creator of DotA, a guy called Eul is, which actually works for Valve. Aeon of Strife and DotA spawned tons of clones, but one clone called DotA Allstars raised to popularity and became what Dota 2 has ported to it's own engine. Dota Allstars never died because when the dev left, there was someone else picking it up, such as Guinsoo(from Riot) and Icefrog, which is developing it to this day(although it's very slow today).

The history of these "tug of war" games are really cloudy, there's a thread on the DotA forum that is very accurate, but you still have to dig your way to it.

..Try both? They're variations on essentially the same game with different tastes.

They can both run on toasters--it may depend on how crappy your laptop is though.

And there is a big skill difference between each game. Dota 2 is strategic mind, high skill level players while LoL is targeted to new players. Dota 2 however is great to play if you can keep track of your hero's turning speed(switching direction, yes THIS IS A MECHANIC!),etc

I prefer League, but only because I got into it faster than into Dota. But I stopped playing League regularly when school started this year so I can't really say how things are atm.

I once had one of these, now I've got this.

Both are pretty easy to drive, I'd say it's a bit easier to run LoL, specially on a really potato PC, but Dota 2 looks nicer (and will get even better with the Source 2 upgrade soon).

There is no better game here, they are variations that come from the same origins.

Later to the party GabeN showed up and gave Dota a home in Valve Studios, creating Dota 2. At this point Riot had already gain a lot more popularity.

While Dota 2 kept growing, LoL started to branched out on it's own flavor, so It's not just a Dota clone, it just has its basics on it.

Personally I found that the learning curve in Dota 2 is much tougher and longer that LoL's one. While LoL is still more friendly to the noob user. I find Dota 2 more challenging and better with friends, while LoL still provides a decent gaming experience when you play alone.

Either will run fine on most anything (my friend's 9 year old laptop can run League and Dota isn't much more demanding), but if you're new to MOBAs and aren't looking to go crazy, I would suggest League of Legends. Both games are very similar, but the learning curve for Dota is higher because of its multiple shops, greater number of items, option to deny minions, and a multi-level map.

No matter which you decide, I would heavily advise that you start playing with some friends. It's more fun that way and the community will feel less terrible if there's someone you can laugh off comments with.

I remembered when my friend was playing on a netbook with only 5-13 fps. Good old days. Surprisingly, he really played well on that netbook. If I was getting that fps, I would just throw whatever I'm using.

If you have crappy laptop, then play League. Although if you have a better one, I would suggest hopping to Dota 2 first. Dota is not that hard, the only thing that makes the game hard are the players itself. You would understand if you play the game for the first time.  I played Dota for like 8 years and moved on to league 3 about years ago because my friends were starting to play it.

I think League is less taxing, but I had a different experience. My sister's laptop keeps on stuttering when playing league, not sure why. (Played it in a x2 5000 gt210 pc with no problems)

I'd say try both.
