What speakers to choose for home theater speaker setup?

Michael Joeden

TLDR:

- I need a speaker setup for music, home theater, etc...

- preferably 5.1

- Absolute max is $550

- price does not include receiver, I already have one

- need mounts for only 2 of the speakers

- This is what I have right now - https://pcpartpicker.com/user/MichealJoeden/saved/ttwyXL

- please use B&H, Amazon, or Newegg

I am parting out a home theater system for my parents' living room. It is not a large room, but since it is open to the rest of the house it will likely serve as a music system that needs to be loud enough to be heard from everywhere. I swayed them away from complete systems, because they seemed to be lacking in speaker quality for the price point we were looking into. The front speakers can be placed on the media center, so they do not need a mount, but the rear speakers have no place to sit, so the budget must include mounts, as well as enough speaker wire to reach everything. Length is not a concern, just the quality, gauge, and insulation for an attic. Our budget is $500 USD, but $550 would be accepted including mounts and wire. No receiver is needed, since we already have one capable of 5.1. Here is the one that I already did, I am not sure if these are the best speakers for our application, but from research this is what I could scrounge together. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/MichealJoeden/saved/ttwyXL                      https://pastebin.com/RwGr9xHs

a couple things....what receiver and can it put out enough watts to power the speakers or can the speakers handle the receiver.
another is will you like how the speakers sound. i find it best if you have to buy speakers to look for a place you can go to and actually hear what they sound like.
i say this because everyone has different tastes when it comes to sound...is there enough highs....not enough lows...to much mids.....(yeayea i know im picky :P )

Why are you mixing brands for center and left/right? Going to have different tonalities between them and will sound weird. Sound is very subjective. I agree with circ said above, you should listen to them. Right now Polk has their speakers on sale for their lower line, you can get a bookshelf pair for $50 and towers for $100 each, center I think is $75. Don't mix brands....

My parents have just now decided to inform me that the speakers need to be small and hidden away. I wish this wasn't the case, but a all-in-one system is looking like the solution now, since they wan't the speakers hidden in the corners of the room. Will this one suffice? https://www.sony.com/electronics/all-in-one-home-cinema-systems/bdv-n5200w

Can I make a better recommendation? If you already have a receiver.

Def Tech 5.1 system. They are almost always on sale around that $500 point, but for that price in a small space, they do extremely well, and are small.

PS- Please don't buy the Sony. That system just isn't worth it.

This looks like a lot better deal than the Sony system, but I'm not sure if this will work with my receiver, since the wattage may be too low. I have an old Sony STR-DE705, the first link is from Amazon, and the second is the manual for it.

If this is not going to work, can you recommend an inexpensive alternative that won't exceed the $550 overall budget if I so choose to go with the Def Tech System?
