2080Ti + Sandy Bridge 2600k

A friend of mine has been using his Sandy Bridge 8 threads processor for 8 years lol.  He never complains.  Games run good on his system 60fps with his 1080 GTX.  Anyhow, he just bought a Gigabyte 2080Ti and wants to upgrade CPU, but I told him don't just see how it plays first with different new gen games.  What do you all think.  Was this a bone head move by him, or can Sandy Bridge and 2080Ti get along.

The CPU is definitely a bottleneck, I bet the CPU was a bottleneck with the GTX 1080. Are his FPS even any higher with the RTX 2080Ti?

I dunno how the crap your friend is playing with that but I guess each persons standards are different.

Well, even I, a proponent of sticking with older CPU's as long as framerate's good, am kinda thrown off with this combo. But as long as he gets good framerate in games and is satisfied with the overall experience, he can save up for, perhaps, Zen 2 next year. I have a 2600K + GTX 1080 combo, and I have the card hooked up to a 4K TV, so if I were to get any sort of bottleneck, it'd most likely be the GPU. Peeps say I'm bottlenecking my CrossFire VEGA 64's (3960X @4.25ghz) and RTX 2080 Ti (4770K @4.2ghz), but at the res and ingame video setting I set the games to, I'd be pushing the cards as well. I play Metro 2033 Redux @3440x1440, max ingame (no PhysX) and I get about 150-200+ fps, enabling SSAA drops framerate to 60+ to 80+ fps, so definitely my GPU is being stressed in this instance. As long as my 4770K can manage good framerate, I don't really care. It's, perhaps, fortunate that I don't have a yen for online games where a fast CPU is also desired.

That's my baby...24GB of ram and a 1080Ti connected to a 4k 42" TV. So far I'm getting ~60 in Destiny 2 and FFXIV. Most of the components are ~10 years old except the GPU/PSU. As @GamerDude mentioned as long as FPS is good he can keep going. I've been watching computer parts for the last 3 years... but can never bite the bullet because for programming and gaming so far; this one doesn't hurt my life. Then again, maybe I don't know what I'm missing.

We play Quake Champions and Unreal Tournament together.  He never complained with the 1080 GTX.  I asked him does your framerate drop to 40's and he says no.  But also I dont know his nvpanel settings.  In game I believe both games he goes with High instead of Ultra.  Now with the 2080Ti he says he has no money for a CPU lol... go figure.  I asked him do you see a difference, and he said no.  He plays 60hz vsync on and 1080p.  He just told me it never goes below 60fps.  I guess those two engines pown.  Just like Fortnite uses Unreal Engine.  So if the 1080 GTX was doing fine why he upgraded I don't know.  sighs

Again, as I'd said, IF framerate is good enough with the 2600K , it doesn't hurt to OC it to 4.2ghz-4.4ghz (I have mine at 4.2ghz now, though I can go uo to 4.4ghz in a pinch, no games I'm playing on this rig requires that OC), then leave it be. Your friend can save up for an Intel or AMD upgrade later on when he's saved up enough. From what I've read, I myself may go Zen 2 for one, or both my main rigs.....if Zen 2 performance meets with or surpasses my expectations.

He plays with Vsync on at 60Hz at 1080p.......... He should trade in his 2080Ti for a 1060 6GB......... With Vsync on he will never see a performance upgrade with anything better than a 1060. He needs to get a 144Hz 1440p gaming monitor asap lol. A part of me just died reading this haha.

Obviously he shouldn't upgrade his CPU if the performance is up to snuff. Although I bet he will want to get a 3770k once seeing some bad stuttering.

LMAO, Im telling you man.  I don't know what he was thinking paying 1.3 Grand for what I have no clue.  I mean I guess hes future proof at least.  Now I know fact after Sandy Bridge the processors became much faster like the 3xxx and 4xxx series still shine.  Yes JM21 lol he needs 144hz monitor.  I told him its a pointless upgrade, he had cash and has a OS with crap load of programs and what not he doesn't want to format, so that is part of the reason hes sticking with the Sandy, cuz new mobo means install everything over again.  Maybe he can get a 144Hz monitor soon to make the 2080 really shine.

144Hz needs CPU horsepower, it's resolution that usually departs from CPU resources.

i think the RTX 2080ti should be used with at least a 2560x1400 144h monitor or 4K...

And also for VR.

if not, its wasted performance.

At 4k the i7 2600K could actually be used still if you're targeting 60fps, but if he can afford a 2080 Ti then lol make an i7 8700K build alongside it.

 

Now if you have an i7 8700K + RTX 2080 Ti with a 1920x1080p60hz display you're doing something terribly wrong.

Your right, the reason he won't upgrade mobo because of his OS and boat load of apps.  Eventually he will upgrade CPU.  Should he still keep the card or go down to 1080 ?  Or he needs to buy a monitor @ 144hz...  I think hell get a new monitor but for now it's Sandy for him.  Thanks again all.

it depends on how high his 2600k is clocked, i only dropped that build last year, if it's clocked at 4.8 already, then going ryzen won't help TOO much unless the game uses 6/8 cores fully. 

 

So his upgrade imo comes down to 4 choices depending on budget/monitor, i would not recommend going from sandy bridge to ryzen for gaming only

 

1. if he gets 4k/60 monitor he doesn't need to upgrade, though he'll notice sub 60 in a very few games, keep the 2080 ti, just crank everything to full. He'll need windows 10 for hdr on netflix/desktop, just in case he's still on win 7.

 

if he gets a high refresh rate monitor 98/120/144hz:

 

2. only go 8700k/8086k if he intends to delid, otherwise,

 

3. 9700k if his budget is 400dollars for the cpu

 

4. 9900k if he has money to spare and wants hyperthreading.

Thank you soo much for your post xg32.  Your smart cat..  His Sandy is actually OCed to 4.6Ghz.  I think he will go all out like he did on his video card.  He just has literally like 100 apps and utils installed, this is why he is hesitating.  I think I will tell him to get the 9900k when he is ready and prior to that with his Sandy he can couple the video card with a 144hz 27 inch gaming monitor.

Thanks for your input my friend.  And nice Rig.  I guess when he gets a 144hz monitor we will see things more clearly.  Because right now there is no performance improvement going from 1080 to 2080Ti,,  he just sees 60fps at all times.

Does he have Vsync enabled? It should be 60fps all the time......

Yes, vsync is enabled,, disabling would drive up framerates but he doesn't like image tearing.

Hmmm, I have the 4770K paired with the RTX 2080 Ti on an Acer XR341CK and I'd not enabled Vsync, I don't see any tearing. Maybe certain game engines or monitors do not like fluctuating framerates. I sometimes wish all games play like UT3, I mean I can see a few hundred fps and there's no tearing....maybe I'm getting old and my eyesight's going.

Hey Dude, good post.  How about adaptive vsync.  If you don't see tearing with vsync off then the game turns it on no ?

Bah, I believe you gotta let your cards run full bore and free of encumbrances, like the Zebras and Antelopes in the plains of the Serengeti, we must allow them the freedom to roam, and be the best that they can be.

 

I do have my VEGA64's doing Freesync at the 120Hz to 144Hz of my Samsung C49HG9 monitor, or so Adrenalin control panel is telling me anyway....
