That’s a fair point. Do you think it’s a little unbalanced with an 8700k and a 2070/1080?

It certainly is more CPU than you need for the GPU, a GTX 1080 ~ RTX 2070 would already meet their maximum performance with an i5 8400 or Ryzen 5 2600.

The i7 8700K is still recommended for people looking into RTX 2080 Ti just to have an idea.

So I’m planning out my new build and found that these two different cards are pretty close to each other in terms of price. I haven’t seen a whole bunch of data but from what I’ve gathered the RTX 2070 is just slightly ahead in terms of gaming benchmarks (but correct me if I’m wrong).

I’m planning on using an 8700k while gaming at 1440p. I do some video editing in the side, but my computer usage is mostly gaming. Which do you all think will be a better option?

what about a 1070 ti? a little less performance and a lower pricetag with it

I'd say save up for the RTX 2080 or GTX 1080 Ti since you're going big any ways, i7 8700K and 1440p monitor to keep balance.

If you're going with the RTX 2070 or GTX 1080 you should probably go with a Ryzen 5 2600X instead to do better money management.

I feel like a 1070 ti doesn’t really match the performance I want for the total price of the build ($1700 ish range).

The graphic card is probably what I’m purchasing last, so I don’t mind saving up to go the whole nine yards.

x series are normally not worth it. they cost more for just a higher turbo clock. 2700 is also a great choise on that budget

Ahhh okay. I didn’t realize the 8700k was enough for even the RTX 2080 Ti.

Sucks that the gpu GPU investment is going to be a few hundred dollars more but it’s better than downgrading the cpu imo.

I think 2070 as it is equiped with real time ray tracing functionality. It will be better in games like shadow of the tomb raider. 2070 will also have market support for a long time as it just came out.

Personally I would go for the 8600K. You are paying a lot of money just for HyperThreading and IMHO it's not worth the added price since the priority is gaming. Especially if you do 'some video editing'. Be wise and spend that money for HT on something better.

If you're comfortable with going used, then I would say go with a 1080/1080 ti. Just make sure that you get a card with original packaging so you can claim warranty if needed. Also I would suggest going with a r5 2600 and a decent x470 board since you'll be playing at 1440p, oc to 4.2 ghz and pair it with good ram and you'll be within 5-8% of the 8700k in most games.

If you're looking to game at 1440p with a higher refresh rate it would be good to save a little more and go for the 2080/1080ti

For used, as long as the original packaging is there I should be able to claim warranty in most cases right?

Yes, I'm personally using a 1070 ti from a miner that still has over 2 years of warranty left, and I have the original packaging. Some companies might be reluctant to honor it in the case of failure, just make sure to look at specific company policies on that.
