7NM AMD CPU/MOBO

Hello all,

 

I have two quick questions. First, will the current x470 MOBOs be capable of supporting the 7NM AMD CPU, or will it require a new design? Second, if so, what would be some recommendations for a mid range board?  I know the Crosshair VII HERO is generally regarded as one of the best, if not the, motherboard from the x470 series. However I am not very familiar with this particular type of component (first build), and want to check that I will not be paying for additional unnecessary functions at a premium that I will never take advantage of. ATX form factor, custom loop, gaming focus.

Yeah if the motherboard manufacturer bothers to do a bios update they should be supported too along with b450.

But it is up to the manufacturers, so x370 probably is the priority, but we will wait and see.

Well, because it's AyyMD and not Shintel, the chipsets will probably be supported until they're physically unsuitable for the task. But, as long as it can be fixed with a BIOS update or something, it'll still be supported.

All AM4 motherboards will support untill 4000 series AMD CPUs (according to AMD statment) those mobos that were released before the new CPUs will require a BIOS update.

 

 

if you are looking for a good current board. then the B450 Tomahawk is about the best at its pricepoint.

AMD has stated AM4 support and compatibility with new releases until 2020, I'm holding them to it. I also plan to upgrade my CPU when the new 7nm chips are released, currently I have an R7 1700.

if you are looking for a good current board. then the B450 Tomahawk is about the best at its pricepoint.

I have a Gigabyte ab350 gaming 3, it's not the cheapst board they have, so I hope they'll add support for 7nm.

Exactly the same here, once 7nm releases I plan to upgrade from my 1700. If it's worth it ofc. If the performance improvement is only like 5% i'll stick witch the 1700.

Yeah, hopefully Gigabyte continues bios support for that board. I'm sure they will because it would come back to bite them hard if they don't. I would count on it.

 

And performance will be well over 5% we've already seen that in the 2700x.
