500GB or 1TB 860 EVO?

CC268

Hey guys,

Idk why but I can't seem to make my mind up on what size SSD I want to upgrade to - 500GB or 1TB (860 EVO). This will be used for Windows 10 & Programs. I'm actually not much of a gamer, but I like to think ahead and buy more than I need. Would 500GB be big enough for Windows/Programs and maybe 2-4 games? I know game sizes can vary drastically from 10GB - 80GB. I remember Witcher III was about ~40 or 50 GBs...

Thanks.

Absolutely Yes you can live fine with 500GB SSD if you have HDD already. Most games don't need SSD speeds to load at acceptable rate so you don't need to put your 100GB Skyrim mod collection onto the SSD just to open it quicker (unless that's your fetish). Price gap between 250GB and 500GB is smaller than 500GB and 1TB, if you value your money. I would say get the 500GB SSD and live happily.

I went with a 1TB boot drive. Years ago I booted on 500GB but it kept running out of space, and I didn't really play that many games. With a 1TB I don't need to clean up.

I think 500GB is about the minimum, but it's also comfortable. My work laptop is 256GB and I am constantly losing my mind and cleaning/moving data. My home PC is 500GB and I have way more than 2 to 4 games. Not every game is that large. Like Rocket League is only 7GB.

But I should mention I stream everything... movies and music. I don't download anythign to my PC unless I have to.

Buy two 500GB - one for system and one for games. Or even 250 + 500.

Unfortunately I am literally "SSD'"d out unless I bought a different case. I'm upgrading my SSD storage for video editing purposes and will have 1 HDD and 3 SSDs. So I'm out of room.

I am the same way...I keep all my documents, etc on OneDrive. Really the only thing on my boot SSD is the OS and programs.

SO this is your edit drive?

How about something like a sx8200 or ex920, a big more expensive, a good amount faster.

500GB will be good enough for OS, system files, and programs. That being said there are better options. Samsung product come at a premium and aren't necessarily any better than other options. My personal recommendation is the WD Blue series, but either will be a good m.2 SSD.

Probably should have lead with that, your use is clearly not "just" Windows and Programs. ;)

Not getting into editing drives, etc. I've spent over a month doing all the research and this thread has nothing to do with the configuration of the drives I am purchasing.

Eh...like I stated above to Electronics Wizardy...I just wanted some feedback on drive size because this drive WILL ONLY BE USED for programs/OS. This is NOT my editing drive. The problem with introducing other variables into the discussion is that it opens the discussion to all these tangential conversations that have nothing to do with my original question. Forums are fantastic for learning and advice, but they can also be a real sh** storm if your not careful about how your phrase your question and what information you provide. lol...

Running a lot of programs that need to be loaded quickly - OS - Adobe - Editing Suites - so on - Get a 1TB if you want to future proof with minimal space for a few games

Strictly wanting your OS and editing softwares - 500gb

Remember that once your SSD has around 10% remaining it will slow down.

Be safe, safe your case space, get the 1tb.

Well I have a 500GB OS drive and that has two-copies of Windows and a copy of Linux on it.  If I could have afforded more I totally would have, but as pointed out already, a LOT of games don't actually benefit THAT much from an SSD.  I found many were almost as fast as a SATA SSD just by upgrading the CPU.

Thanks for the feedback. I wouldn't mind the WD Blue series, but tbh the price difference is minimal IMO. $16 difference between WD Blue 1TB and Evo 860 1TB. Again, more concerned about drive size at this point and not necessarily brand comparisons.

well then how much do you want to spend. The 1tb is bigger, has more endurance and is slightly faster, but costs more. All depends on how much you want to spend. Space wise both are fine. I can fit windows, adobe cc, and lots of other programs on a 240gb ssd, so both will have plenty of free space.

Like DVA stated, it might be best to just go for the 1TB now...future proof myself to some extent...

Budget wise I can buy the 1TB no problem...it's just a matter of what makes sense.

So, you'll have 3 SSDs and 1 HDD, you're "out of room" because number of drives, and you still asking on forum what size of drive you must buy?

IMO you start this sh** storm by asking unnecessary question and waste people time. With that experience (number of drives etc.) you don't really need any advice, because you may check by yourself how big drive you'll need (get sizes of your existing folders and you'll know how big drive do you need). You only need us to confirm your own choice, isn't? So choose yourself - it's my final answer. You know how big SSD you need.

Woah there buddy...my comment wasn't meant to be an personal insult to anyone here. I'm just stating the honest fact that many times the original question is not addressed and the topic of conversation becomes something completely different. The question was asked to get the feedback of others and their experiences with drive sizes. That information is useful. If someone tells me they have a 500GB boot drive with a certain number of programs and a certain number of games, then that information is certainly useful in my decision.

Realistically, 500GB is probably enough for me. In this case it probably is worth spending the extra $80 on a 1TB, if not simply for the sake of "installing it and forgetting it".

I have not wasted anybody's time here except maybe your own. Then again, you decided to take the time to respond.

Yes, I decided, but based on wrong assumptions that you really need advice. I was surprised that you answered someone that you don't want his answer.

Sorry man, but everyone answers what they like and users here can ask their own questions too if they want.

I didn't tell anyone that I didn't want their answer. I simply redirected the question back to it's original intention, which was drive size, not the configuration of how I have my SSDs setup. I was just trying to keep the thread on topic, which I think is perfectly acceptable.
