Buying Prebuilts

Going to be buying a prebuilt from bestbuy had questions on the difference between intel optane memory and ssd which is better? plz help

All other things being equal, I would get the ssd because it's consistently fast with no gimmicks.

 

I would also consider getting the cheaper one and spending the difference on a 500gb ssd and adding that for games

but if you're going to, the first one with the 8700k, hdd, and ssd is the best choice

It's very hard to 'fail' while building a PC, all you need is common sense.

Less reliable parts? Come on, you're reaching here.  Intel, Nvidia, etc.  Please point out what parts are substandard and perform badly by being in a prebuilt.

Price-to-Performance wise, yes. But when you buy a prebuilt you get the peace of mind of knowing it'll work and if it doesn't you can return it.

 

I'm just saying that I dislike it when people immediately kneejerk to telling someone not to buy prebuilt when they don't even know the OP's situation. Seems like any thread about prebuilts on the internet immediately attracts people that say not to do it. It's really not for everyone and not ideal for all situations.

It;s not that I oppose pre-builts, its just you can get much better for your money. That's what bothers me because these companies charge so much more for it only because they had some robots (idk if actual people built it but I doubt it) put it together.

There are many guides on YT, if you follow those you CANNOT go wrong while planning/building a PC.

You're choosing two pieces out of how many that are in the system?

You'll often get lower end motherboards, possibly slower RAM. The biggest cost cutting measures are a cheapish case (which really, won't be that noticeable since you won't be building in it) and an OEM PSU. The PSU is the worst part. You also get significantly shorter warranties.

I just came in and saw people immediately telling you not to get storebought and felt the need to say "Whoa whoa whoa hold up now" about that. But they are indeed correct that building your own is more bang for buck, not to mention you get to make your own baby which is a reward of it's own.

Exactly, this.  I just can;'t back the black and white "prebuilts suck" mentality.  

 

Also, I'll concede the OEM parts for less warranty or lower end PSU.  But the majority of the parts are name brand and solid.  Slower RAM?  Hell, most builders here buy lower speed RAM cuz it's cheaper.  That's not a reliability issue.  

 

I do lean toward the build your own, have for 30 years now.  Still have my 3Dfx 8MB add on card   But damn it, I don't build for others cuz then they expect you to support them.

Besides that they didn't appear to specify the capacity of the optane? That kinda throws me off. It may just be one of those "Optane Accelerated" HDDs, in which case I would definitely choose the far-right one because it's a proper SSD + slightly Better CPU. It's downside is having only 16 gigs of memory compared to 32 gigs but unless you're using your system for productivity software of some kind you won't notice that.

I went the other way, the upgrade from 8700K to 8086K was less money than  the 16 to 32GB RAM.  You get more value on the far left one then the far right, plus more SSD for game loading or fast filing.  Screw Optane and a HDD for the middle.

I have common sense. I still fucked up and killed my CPU socket on my motherboard due to lag(brain.exe has crashed, rebooting in 0.0001s... aaand CPU is sideway into the socket pins.).

Shit happens, it's not "very hard" to fail.

Pre-Built are great, if the price is close to what you'd pay for a custom PC. Heck, used pre-built are awesome, because they are often much cheaper to buy than to get the individual parts.
