So I've got a single wired Ethernet connection on my motherboard then a wifi card. 

So I installed Virtual Box a while ago but I hadn't restarted my PC, so when I did so it took my on board Ethernet and won't let my host windows have it. I don't want the VM to take ether altho if I have to  i'll give it my wifi card.

Virtualbox at least on a default config shouldn't overtake any physical network interface. It creates a virtual interface that is passed through to the VMs. Check to see if the options have set to bond/pass-through the NIC with a VM or any other possible setting.

Well, I'm in the host OS, I got wifi but no Ethernet in the host.

To be honest, it sounds like a botched install.

 

Can you take a screenshot of the Network Adapters:

"Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections"

 

I see that the Network Driver cannot start - I would uninstall VirtualBox, then remove any Virtual Network Adapters (if left over), then uninstall the Intel Network driver (make sure you've downloaded the driver install file first), then reboot and reinstall the Network Driver.

 

Then go through the VirtualBox installation again, and reboot right away after.

Ok so just uninstalled VirtualBox and I had already removed the virtual nic.

I just restarted. Now going to reinstall the drivers.

Try uninstalling the driver and select the "delete driver software" checkbox.

 

You should also try booting into a Linux Live CD (Knoppix, PartedMagic, or any of the major distros) and see if your NIC is working outside of Windows.

 

Do this before RMA.
