SSD size for Windows 10 operating system

Nicholas Blair

Hi there,

so I'm new at building PC's and am now wanting to build my own for the first time. I've been watching LTT and other tech channels for over 2 years, so I've got some knowledge. I want to have an SSD for the Windows 10 operating system, and then a 2 TB hard drive for everything else. Does anybody know what the ideal size for this SSD would be? I know that Windows 10  64bit needs 20gb of storage, but this does seem a bit small and might bring some problems for updates in the future. At least that's what I think.

Thanks in advance!

I would recommend at least 250GB if you want downloads/documents on SSD and 500 is sweat spot where you can install some frequent games on it. It really depend what your workload and what you going to use the computer for.

I'd say 250GB is the sweet spot. But if you are on a really tight budget you can get away with a 120GB.

If you want just windows on the SSD go for 64gb, if you want some games installed to the SSD go atleast 120 just make sure your storage drive is 7200rpm, I'm running win 10 on a 16gb SSD (and only windows 10) and I'd say it needs atleast 32gb minimal

I've used a 256GB for a boot drive before but if you can afford 500GB then I think you will find it a more comfortable size.
